Upon entering the unassuming red-and-white tiled space of “Five Guys Famous Burgers and Fries,” the first thing one notices is the boxes upon boxes of peanut oil. Actual peanuts are served on these boxes for customers waiting for their orders. This focus on the legume may be very dissuading for those allergic, but very appealing to those looking for a healthier alternative to the regular burger joints. And while “Five Guys” is indeed a chain, the quality of the food reflects the amount of care the staff takes with each and every order.

The hand cut fries are cooked in peanut oil and can be ordered in regular or Cajun styles. The oil not only makes the fries less lethal but gives them a unique taste that’s almost addictive. A festive dry erase board advertises where the days’ potatoes come from.

This kind of décor in addition to the spacious dining room and a fully visible grill make “Five Guys” feel more like the local greasy spoon than a franchise with locations all over the eastern seaboard.

Now how about those burgers? Well, they are famous for a reason. A regular hamburger is two fresh ground beef patties, and a “little” is a one-patty variation. While I have had burgers from Johnny Rockets and Joe’s Bestburger, I can safely say that the superb taste in combination with the array of free toppings (everything from fried onions to jalapeno peppers) make a Five Guy’s burger one of the best (and tastiest) values in Queens. Its no wonder the chain has been “Zagat rated” for the past six years.

This College Point location is a little out of the way but is well worth the trip. For great fresh food, affordable prices, and a friendly atmosphere be sure to go to Five Guys.
