If you can dream it, they have it on the menu at the Fame Diner in Maspeth.
Situated on a bustling corner in the heart of what is quickly becoming a multi-ethnic dining strip on Grand Avenue, the Fame Diner has outlasted many others who have sought to gain…uh...notoriety in the pantheon of Queens diners.
Fame has kept its booths, its cash register at the front, its menu of burgers, sandwiches, Greek specialties, salads, seafood and whatever else you could want – all without missing a beat. Go in any night and the place is packed.
That’s just what we did recently. My daughter went simple – grilled cheese and fries. The bread was well-toasted, the fries were crispy and the huge mound of cole slaw that came with the sandwich was truly a side dish unto itself.
I went for the Jumbo Cheeseburger deluxe, served with more of those fries and some onion rings, too. It also comes with your choice of tossed salad or a cup of soup.
Find out what the soup of the day is and get it. Fame has made some great soups for years.
My wife helped herself to a BLT that came with crisp lettuce, juicy tomatoes and the most delicious smoked bacon in Maspeth. It is just one of the sandwiches you will find, though most of the others have cool names like the Maspeth Melt Down, the Belt Buster and the Benmor Express.
When we go with my mother-in-law, she usually ends up getting a full dinner, which comes with a complimentary glass of wine, soup or salad, vegetables and bread & butter.
Of course you can get a great omlette, pancakes, blintzes, Belgian waffles and any other breakfast food any time at Fame.
Like the song says, this place is going to live forever. It has been a staple of Maspeth for years and continues to pack ’em in every night. Enjoy!
