For drew davis – yes, she likes her name lower case – modeling has been a great hobby for about eight years now.
“I have a personal assistant business, and I am a group fitness instructor,” she said on her way to a recent photo shoot. “The modeling is just freelance on the side, really a part time thing.”
A sexy lingerie model, drew never expected to actually work in the industry. In 1998 this Florida native was living in California and working with a friend on a Web site that would “give Playboy some competition.”
“They wanted to test somebody, so they sent me to the photographer,” drew said. “I was supposed to be the decoy or dummy model, but the photographers told me they thought I had something.
After a few years in California, drew moved to Sunnyside, and the modeling jobs seemed to come even easier initially. “It was pretty fluid – if you’re the new person in the market you get a lot of attention,” drew said.
While not modeling or working at her personal assistant company, PA For A Day, drew can be found biking by the riverview piers near the East River, coming up the loop to Astoria Park. “I’m a regular on my bike,” she said. She often will take New York Water Taxi so she can bike in Manhattan as well.
“I actually love that you can step outside the city, go at a slightly slower pace,” she said as she had to hurry off, adding: “In Queens you have more a sense of home. It sounds simple, but I love the wider sidewalks.”

Was It Illegally Parked?
As shown by this police car getting a helping hand from a department tow truck on Queens Boulevard in Forest Hills, it seems that even the boys in blue experience car trouble from time to time. Looks like police cruisers are just as susceptible to your every day breakdowns as regular vehicles. Maybe the next time the policeman who drives this car gets ready to call in the tow truck on someone, he’ll think back to his own experience of the helpless frustration that goes along with watching one’s vehicle get carried off on the flat bed.

Animated Beep
While stopping by to give a grant to the African Center for Community Development in St. Albans, Borough President Helen Marshall was caught in a “Hey, check that out!” pose as she spied some kids playing Double Dutch outside the center – perhaps remembering her days doing the same in East Elmhurst.

Heights Horror Guy

Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, Candyman…Parry Shen?
That’s right. The Jackson Heights born actor is playing alongside some of the horror genre’s big boys in the movie “Hatchet,” a film that stars Robert “Freddy” Englund, Kane “Jason” Hodder, and Tony “Candyman” Todd.
Shen, usually known for his mild-mannered characters and unassuming demeanor, puts on his “Ahh!” face, as one of the unlucky souls suckered into a New Orleans swamp where countless horrors await in the form of a murderous hatchet-wielding madman.
Well received at the TriBeCa Film Festival, the film is currently seeking a distributor. Shen said that rather than follow the genre’s current trend of torture and gore films, the “Hatchet” swingers wanted to go back to the chopping block and bring some of the fun back into the fright.
When asked to give a hint about the film'soutcome in a recent interview with QConf, Shen didn’t leave much to the imagination. “Everybody dies,” he said.

It’s a Girl

City Councilman Eric Gioia and wife Lisa had their first child last week, a girl, Amelia Hernandez Gioia.
The baby, who they will call Lia for short, was born just after 8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 27, weighing in at a healthy 7 lbs. 4 oz. Both the mother and child were recovering in good condition.
The slightly frazzled new father managed to make a scheduled press conference the next day, still sporting the hospital wristband that matches him to his daughter. Not to mention he and his wife met while working on Al Gore’s presidential campaign, so little Lia certainly has politics in her blood.
Watch out Hillary or Condi, looks like there may be another contender . . . and this one from Queens.
Congrats Lisa and Eric!
