Watch Nikki!
|
|
Nikki is just 13 but already she’s a pro on the dance floor.
From hip hop to jazz to tap, Nikki doesn’t just think she can dance; she knows it. And now she’s ready to take on her next accomplishment: modeling.
Nikki took her first step into the business when she caught the eye of a photographer who thought she had what it takes. That first appearance was a tough one, she said, but stepping in front of the camera is starting to get easier.
“I was kind of shy,” she said. “I was afraid to go in front of the camera. My mom said, ‘If this is what you want to do, you’ve got to do it.’”
And that seemed to work. Nikki is now entertaining the idea of becoming both a professional model and a cheerleader, one of her other favorite hobbies.
When she’s not modeling, cheerleading, dancing or swimming in her pool, Nikki is either hanging out with her friends at one of their houses or relaxing on the swings at the local park, or maybe she’s at her favorite T.G.I. Fridays restaurant.
Nikki is a lifelong resident of Queens and loves the county in which she is growing up.
“There are lots of things,” she said. “How it is, where it’s situated. There’s good people here.”
So keep your eyes open the seventh grader. Maybe you’ll be seeing her in a fashion magazine or a sports field – or both – in the near future.

| The Secretary of State with KISS in Stockholm
|
What do you do if you like to rock and roll all night, but speak with foreign ministers all day?
You become secretary of state, just like Condoleezza Rice.
Rice was recently interrupted in Stockholm while dining with Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt and asked if she would like to meet the makeup-heavy rockers Kiss.
Rice – nicknamed “Guru” by her boss, President George W. Bush – gladly jumped at the opportunity and told reporters she was “thrilled” to meet with the band, which was created by Queens residents Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons and is a global marketing force. The Kiss brand name has been slapped on everything from coffins to prophylactics.
She posed for photos with the group – sans wacky makeup – while her staff received backstage passes, T-shirts and autographs.
While Rice may have considered a career as a classical pianist at one point in her life, her knowledge of rock music isn’t quite as vast. She admitted to reporters she had only been to four rock concerts (and one of them was U2, which is mandatory for politicians and shouldn’t count).
Kiss went on to perform later that night. Stanley and Simmons then partied the following day.

Ferraro Not Warming to Obama
|
| Queens Congresswoman Gerry Ferraro was the only major party Vice Presdiential candidate in history.
|
Geraldine Ferraro just can’t keep her foot out of her mouth.
After first drawing fire for her comments that some felt painted Barack Obama as a sexist, the Clinton supporting, one time Congresswoman from Queens remains unsure if she will back his candidacy in the general election.
It’s been tough spring for Ferraro.
She was also roundly criticized for implying that Sen. Obama’s unlikely rise to the nomination has benefited from his being African-American, and that a white candidate would not have drawn so much attention.
Now she is being criticized for indicating that she feels the news media have gone easy on Obama.
She also suggested that black journalists specifically are fawning over the charismatic senator.
The National Association of Black Journalists is firing back at the former vice presidential candidate saying she showed “unapologetic bigotry” in remarks over the Memorial Day weekend that suggested black journalists were shills for Barack Obama.
Ferraro, the first female vice presidential candidate in American history could have that distinction eclipsed if Obama chooses Hillary as his running mate and goes on to victory.

Clip & Save Me
With the economic pinch strong arming purses all across the country and New York State for that matter, a Queens man is still enjoying life in the cheap lane.
Sam Pocker, a Woodside resident does what so many of us are too proud or too lazy to do – walk around with a briefcase stacked with coupons.
In a Daily News article, Pocker says that he sometimes doubles up on coupons, by using the manufacturer’s coupon and store coupon while the item is on sale. That is definitely a master at work.
Pocker is so adept at what he does that he purchased Barbra Streisand tickets online for $9 two years ago. He is also working on a book tentatively dubbed “Retail Therapy.”
Teach me, oh great one.

Bennett With The Best
|
| This week, PBS airs a documentary about Queens favorite crooner, Tony Bennett who above, reads Queens' favorite paper.
|
This week PBS is showing a documentary about the making of Tony Bennett Duets: An American Classic, the album that earned the Astoria boy another round of Gammy Awards in 2007.
The album, which Tony Bennett recorded in celebration of his 80th birthday, features duets with such greats as Stevie Wonder, Bono, Barbra Streisand and Christina Aguilera.
Bennett, who travels the world in the documentary to meet each of the singers in their hometowns, said he was blown away by pop star Aguilera. Although Aguilera hails from the borough of Staten Island, Bennett couldn’t help but compare her to another Queens native: Ethel Merman.
