Twice the Charmer

A few years ago, Kathleen Maguire found herself inundated with modeling opportunities. After placing her photographs on onemodelplace.com, she received a ton of calls – so much so that the experience proved overwhelming.

“I was in school full time – it was just too much,” she said. “I got back into modeling a month and half ago and now I’m ready.”

The petite beauty, who is also a full-time mom to her 6-year-old son, graduated from Long Island University a month ago with a degree in surgical technology. In addition to hitting the books in preparation for the national board exams, Kathleen has decided to give professional modeling another whirl – an endeavor that often involves patience.

“It’s hard to find a good photographer,” she said. “There are a lot of people on the Internet – you never know who is legit.”

Kathleen also realizes that, considering the surplus of rookie models searching for work on the Web, it’s helpful to know your strengths as a model.

“I’m too short to work the runway,” she said. “I want to focus on glamour modeling. My dream job would be to work for a lot of magazines. I love Maxim magazine and other classy magazines that still have a lot of sex appeal.”

In her downtime, Kathleen can be found hanging out – not at clubs or the mall – but on a local patch of grass or asphalt.

“I love soccer,” she said. “I love watching Portugal’s team and I love to play. I can’t wait until my son is old enough so I can take him to play.”

X-Rated Rant

The Nassau Queens border hotspot

Long Island officials aren’t just rejecting the come hither advances of one Queens strip club, they’re going straight for the jugular – by filing a lawsuit against its owners.

For months, a racy advertisement for the Platinum Club, a strip club on Rockaway Boulevard in Rosedale, has created a major backlash from Nassau County residents living along the Queens/Nassau County border where the provocative sign has been hoisted. Several officials, including Queens Councilman James Sanders, have said the billboard, which features a woman draped in nothing but a few slivers of black tape, is just too lewd for the locals.

“This is a quality of life issue and we demand to be respected,” Sanders wrote in a letter to the club.

A Stink Solved

It turns out that the syrupy sweet smell that some in Western Queens and Manhattan have been complaining about for the last 3 and a half years is coming from – surprise – New Jersey!

Since October 2005 the city has gotten thousands of calls about an aroma somewhere between candle wax and maple syrup. The source, it seems, turns out to be neither.

Mayor Mike Bloomberg held a press conference last week to explain that after some hi-tech research, the source of the stink is a Hudson County, N.J. factory that processes fenugreek, the seeds of which are used to make curry, imitation vanilla and some veterinary medicines.

The seed also has an ancient use – it is said to increase breast size in women. At the count of three, take a deep breath…

Mets Start Cooling

(L) Oliver Perez signed a 3-yr deal (R) John Maine, one yr at $2.6 mil

It appears the headline-grabbing chunk of the Mets’ offseason is now behind the club. With a series of deals and debunked rumors, the team’s 25-man roster has become predictable.

First the Amazin’s avoided arbitration with righty John Maine, when he signed a one-year, $2.6 million deal. Another righty, former White Sox ace Freddy Garcia, was added in a minor league deal that hopes to offer some depth to the rotation.

The Mets added a body to their bench with utility infielder Alex Cora, who figures to spell oft-lamented second baseman Luis Castillo, possibly vying for the starting spot.

Lastly, erratic but often stellar lefty Oliver Perez was signed to three-year, $36 million contract that will keep him in Citi Field long enough to see its name change.

General Manager Omar Minaya said the Perez signing would be the Mets’ last big move of the offseason, implying Manny Ramirez will not wear blue, orange and black next season. But as long as the manic left fielder with a lame glove and killer bat is a free agent, rumors of a Flushing stay will abound.

Here Comes The Bride

They are expecting wedding bells ringing off the hook at City Hall in 2009 in the new Office of the City Clerk.

The new facility, at 141 Worth Street in Lower Manhattan, is part of a complete overhaul of how New Yorkers and visitors receive marriage licenses and other documents.

“New York City is already a legendary location to tie the knot, but this new location will give customers an even better, smoother experience that is more enjoyable and more memorable,” said First Deputy Mayor Patricia E. Harris, who oversaw the renovation project. “The enhancements we have made will transform one very important aspect of the City Clerk’s office – the Marriage Bureau – and will help make New York City an even more desirable wedding destination for people around the country and the world.”

The design and construction of the project totaled $12.3 million.

But don’t fret, you don’t have to run downtown to get hitched, the Queens offices, 120-55 Queens Blvd., also have recently received aesthetic and structural enhancements and the staff received customer service training. They also accept credit cards, can receive applications electronically and access translation services.

Happy 107th

107-year-old Ann Brovich

A Queens native recently celebrated an astonishing anniversary – her 107th to be exact.

Ann Brovich turned 107 years old on Jan. 17. Brovich celebrated the event with family in Bonita Springs, Fla.

We’re not sure whether she’s the oldest Queens native, but for someone who’s lived through two World Wars and was born when Teddy Roosevelt occupied the White House – does it really matter?

Congratulations, Ann.
