Trisha From Taiwan

Trisha came to Queens from Taiwan about five years ago and started to attend Queensborough Community College; but now that she has got a job and a diploma she’s considering staying for a long time. “I like it here,” she said, “it’s very convenient to have all my friends in Flushing and, well, there are less rules so I like it more.”

She started modeling through a photographer boyfriend about a year ago and has done commercial, promotion, and fashion shots. “I liked being in front of the camera, it was so fun.” Could it be full time? “Well, taking the pictures is easy part, but finding the work is sometimes a challenge.”

Trisha is taking graphic design classes at the Fashion Institute of Technology and hopes to design logos for a career. “Right now, my friends ask me for drawings and I love to do it for them, but that’s what I want to be doing for client.” In the meantime, she has a full time position now at an import-export logistics company.

And when she’s not working or posing for the lens? “Every month, my friends and I go swing dancing in the city.”

Madoff’s Lucky Numbers

Ralph Amendolaro is the only person in Queens – probably in all of New York City – who has any reason to smile at the thought of Bernie Madoff.

The Glendale resident is $1,500 richer thanks to the tycoon/criminal. Or, rather, thanks to the last three digits etched onto Madoff’s shiny new prison jumpsuit.

For three days, Amendolaro, a construction worker and father of three, placed a $3 lottery bet on the numbers 054 and on the third day – success.

“He’ll probably look to charge me on the investment that I made off of him,” Amendolaro told the Daily News. “He’ll probably want a cut.”

He may not have won a million dollars, but, sadly, it’s a lot more than many of Madoff’s victims have seen so far.

Flushing In Flushing

Don’t panic. That flushing sound you heard coming from Citi Field wasn’t the Mets season (yet). The Mets were just giving their johns in the shiny new stadium an inaugural spin.

“We’re going to simulate a day at the game, with all the water going off at the same time,” said Marie Morena, vice president of Cardoza Plumbing Corp., which installed all of Citi Field’s plumbing, piping, equipment and fixtures, told Newsday.

Morena gathered 300 volunteers amongst the workers and other personnel on the job and coordinated a simultaneous flush – the same sound you hear when Luis Castillo steps into the batter’s box.

As you’d expect, the Mets did their toilet test nearly a month after the Yankees already made sure their porcelain thrones were in order. Though one could say they had been jiggling the handle the entire offseason by flushing a ton of money down the free agent market’s tubes.

We’ll see where they flush in October.

Made in Queens

The production of a Queens film was tied to Albany’s current pension fund scandal according to a state probe.

“Chooch,” a critical and box-office flop about a Queens man who lets his softball team down, was thrust into the spotlight after prosecutors discovered that the film’s producer was related to a top pension fund official, David Loglisci, now under federal indictment.

Loglisci was an appointee of then NYS Comptroller, Queens' Alan Hevesi. Indicted along with Loglisci was Hevesi campaign guru Hank Morris.

The scrutiny came when prosecutors discovered that the film’s DVD distributors were awarded a $150 million contract by the pension fund months before the DVDs hit shelves, according to the Daily News.

Not one mainstream critic praised the flick. The film garnered an impressive zero-percent on the site Rottentomatoes.com’s movie review database.

“The sort of vanity project that gives amateurs a bad name,” New York Post movie critic Lou Lumenick said of the film.

Thing For The Trib

Brad Groznik

We’re starting to get the feeling that Councilman Jim Gennaro has a thing for us. A couple of years ago he hired our reporter Lee Landor to serve as his press secretary, and when she left he hired former Tribbie Shams Tarek, to fill her shoes. Shams just took a job working for Malcolm Smith – the guy’s got Albany chops after having worked for then State Senator John Sabini for a couple of years – and Jim started looking far and wide to replace the man the City Hall News named one of the hottest in NYC politics.

And who should come knocking but recently departed Tribbie Brad Groznik to take over. Sure, Brad’s got the looks and charm, but we’re starting to wonder if maybe Jim has a thing for the folks here on the Horace Harding. Whatever the answer, we’re flattered – and we expect an exclusive every once in a while, Brad.

Oh, and a large placement fee, Jim.

A Hair Raising T Shirt

An example of one-time Queens resident Bob Dylan – in hair.

We’ve been reading former Astoria resident David Friedman’s blog at IronicSans.com for a while, but this week he struck gold. He wrote: “as the weather gets warmer, smooth-chested guys nationwide will be hanging out shirtless in parks and on beaches. A hairless chest is so trendy these days that it’s practically a fashion accessory. But what’s a guy with a hairy chest supposed to do? How can he incorporate his hairy chest in his own fashion?

So he introduced a T-Shirts for Hairy-Chested Men, with strategic cutouts that allow your hairy chest to show through. The mock-up on his blog featured Jimi Hendrix, but we asked David to show some Queens love and he sent us a design sure to be essential for the budding-boro’s hipsters.

Watchin' Your Weight?

Weight Watchers founder Jean Nidetch

With summer just around the bend want to lose that unsightly belly bulge or those saddle bag thighs? How about trying out Weight Watchers, which got its start right here in Queens?

Way back in the early 60’s, Weight Watchers founder Jean Nidetch began inviting friends into her Queens home once a week, to discuss how best to lose weight.

Since then, Jenny McCarthy wasn’t the only babe to slim down on the program.

Gina Pezzino, a Whitestone resident and a mother of four, lost 150 pounds.

According to Fox5’s Good Day New York, Pezzino was so ashamed of her plump derriere she didn’t want her picture taken.

Pezzino said that she really didn’t cut out any foods; she just instituted portion control and did a bit of walking.

So, if you are on a quest for an amazing beach bod, you can still have your cake and eat it. Just make sure you add walking to the main course.
