The X-ray Lady

Who hasn’t fantasized about that naughty nurse who is there to care for you?

Well Jennifer Smith may not exactly fit that role, but this Radiological Technician who also tends bar twice a week at a club called Victory in Garden City can sure come close.

Jennifer started in the modeling business years ago, but she walked away from it. However, after being a single mom and recently earning a degree, she decided to get back into modeling.

“Honestly, I don’t even remember how it happened,” she said. “Oh that’s right, one of the photographers I worked with lived next door to me, and we bumped into each other at 7-11. He got me into it.”

From there she found onemodelplace.com, and decided to sign up to get some more work and build a portfolio.

Right now she said she’s willing to work with just about any photographer. She has done some paid work, but also some free nude work for Francis Hill on a project called Clothing Immaterial to help raise money for breast cancer research.

Jennifer is a product of Queens, born and bred. She went to St. Kevin’s for elementary school and to Francis Lewis High School. She did her work toward her degree in radiological technology at Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola. She plans to go back to school to study radiation therapy some day.

But in the meantime, she enjoys spending her free time at No-No’s on Bell Boulevard or just hanging out with her 10-year-old daughter Kayla.

As for her future in modeling, Jennifer is unsure.
“I don’t really know how to go about it,” she said. “I need to get more pictures, and I’ve got to talk to some more people to get some ideas.”

And we’ll keep looking at the pictures, hoping we had those x-ray glasses.

Just Like Dad

Mr. & Mrs. Donald Trump Jr.

Donald Trump Jr. followed big poppa’s footsteps and married a fashion model. Junior married Vanessa Haydon at Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, where the Senior Trump married fashion model Melania Knauss in January.

The 27-year-old Donald Jr., a Trump Organization executive, reminded guests that it was his pops who picked Haydon out of a fashion show crowd and said, “That’s the kind of girl you should be with.”

Junior took big poppa’s advice and married Haydon by poolside on the night of Nov. 12.

Guests at the junior couple’s wedding included actress Joan Collins, songwriter Denise Rich and model Sophie Dahl.

Bloomberg Time

Sure, we’ve occasionally got some time to kill over here at the QConf desk, but apparently we’re not the only ones.
Politicos looking for that late inning stocking stuffer for Mayor Bloomberg enthusiasts shouldn’t be surprised to come across a strange item on the ever popular auction site eBay.

Yes, it’s the unofficial 2008 Michael Bloomberg For President, 8-1/2-inch circular wall clock, and it can be all yours for the low price of $17.99.

With zero current bids, it hardly sounds like a hot item, but what can you expect when the clock’s makers are from Addison, Ill. What do they know about New York politics?

Queens Marine

A world away from the busy Corona Avenue Marlon Rendon used to stroll down, he now finds himself maneuvering past landmines on his way to providing medical relief to Marines in Iraq.

The 24-year-old corpsman with the 2nd Marine Division immigrated to the United States from Ecuador when he was 17 years old to live with his father and start a new life in Queens. When he joined the Navy he never imagined he would be walking alongside Marines on their daily patrols through the streets of Ramadi, waiting for the split second in which he would have to help stop their pain. The only things on his mind were his interest in pursuing a nursing degree and the hope to one day become a medical diver.

Rendon has said that his job of responding to threats against the camp is not an easy one, especially when he sees a Marine who had been close to fatally wounded. What he does realize, though, is that he volunteered for the assignment and it is one that he will have to uphold until he makes his way back to Corona Avenue.

Everything’s Coming Up Rosie

Bayside's Rosie O'Donnell

Bayside native Rosie O’Donnell appeared on the most recent addition of Inside the Actor’s Studio.

The Dean of the Actors Studio Drama School at the New School, James Lipton, hosts the acclaimed hour-long program where he interviews famous actors about their craft.

When O’Donnell announced that she had grown up in Queens, the audience cheered, likely because the show films in the City. Maybe there was even a Baysider aspiring actor at the taping.

O’Donnell went on to tell Lipton about how in elementary school she memorized entire Broadway scores and sang them to classmates for show and tell. She recalls feeling destined for stardom, and she turned out to be correct: she’s performed in several Broadways plays, and is presently in Fiddler on the Roof opposite Harvey Fierstein.
A somewhat controversial figure, O’Donnell discussed everything from her parents to her sexuality. She’s never been afraid to tell her audience perhaps a little more than they wanted to know, and given an hour to vent, she didn’t disappoint.

Roxanne, Roxanne

The Real Roxanne

In the early 1980s, as hip-hop was starting to take hold in Southeast Queens, a band named U.T.F.O. had a smash hit with the song “Roxanne, Roxanne,” concerning the wooing of a new girl in town, Roxanne.

The real Roxanne, Lolita Shante Gooden from Jamaica, was none too thrilled by this. She argued on her reply record, ‘Roxanne’s Revenge’ that guys should stop calling girls “stuck up” because they weren’t promiscuous. Her words rang true throughout the burgeoning hip-hop community, and future acts like Salt-N-Pepa (which came out of Grover Cleveland High School), Queen Latifah and Missy Eliot all attribute their interest in hip-hop to the “Real Roxanne.”

So where is she now?

After successfully suing her record label for a bigger piece of the pie from her recordings, and enforcing a clause that gave the 15-year-old a promise for an education, Gooden went on to earn her PhD and become a criminal psycologist. She has now returned to her Queens roots. Though we’re not sure where the shop is, the one-time “around the way girl” has according to published reprot, opened an ice cream parlor.

Barbershop TV

Apparently MTV thinks Van, Pop and Teddy over at Mr. Rooney’s Barbershop in Jamaica are worthwhile sources when it comes to evaluating important issues like hip-hop, society and life.

The network announced last week that it would add the new half-hour comedy reality series set in the barbershop to its line-up in early 2006. The series, “The Shop,” will be executive produced by one of the greatest music moguls himself — Tommy Mottola, of course.

“This show reflects a raw, authentic perspective on culture, music, celebrity and life, offering an attitude that speaks directly to our audience,” said Tony DiSanto, senior VP of MTV Production Development and Animation.
If you happen to be strolling around Merrick Boulevard keep a look out for hip-hop celebrities, word on the street – they drop in the joint all the time.
