The New Karate Kid
|
| Christopher Iavarone, Bayside
|
This Karate Kid looks to be Queens’ newest male model. Originally from Long Island but now a resident of Bayside, Christopher Iavarone is looking to break into the modeling business.
Chris, who is a Karate instructor at Tiger Shulmann’s Karate on Bell Boulevard, has repeatedly tried to do as much as he can to get into the business and get discovered, including going to a number of auditions and photo shoots.
So far he has not had much luck, but this 5' 6" plucky black belt keeps on trying.
In his spare time he likes to hang out around town at Papazzio’s restaurant and in the Bay Terrace Shopping Center.
Though the modeling thing may or may not work out for him, Chris is keeping his options open. He may, one day, open his own Tiger Shulmman’s.
As for modeling, Chris would like to follow in the footsteps of one of his biggest role models - Brad Pitt. If he had the chance to be on any magazine cover it would be GQ or Esquire, just like Brad.
He speaks about modeling with a rational demeanor - perhaps a result of years of exposure to Eastern philosophy. Chris says with cerebral depth, “I want to get something going with modeling. If it works, it works. If it doesn’t it doesn’t.”

| Gianaris Engaged
It’s Official!
The next time Assemblyman Michael Gianaris is photographed like this, it will most likely be with his fiancé, whom he recently proposed to. This memorable moment was captured during last year’s All-Inclusive St. Patrick’s Day parade in Sunnyside. This year, after getting engaged, Gianaris marched alone.

End Of The Century

| End Of The Century, now available on DVD

The reward for never selling out is immortality. The legacy of the Ramones, the misfits from Forest Hills, is immortalized in the Ramones movie End Of The Century, which was released on DVD on last week.
End Of The Century documents the band’s rise from Forest Hills to the rest of the world, with a focus on how a lack of radio airplay, the bitter rivalry among members and frequent substance abuse problems almost cut short the band’s 20-plus-year career.
Ramones.com says: “End Of The Century not only documents an important chapter in music history, but also chronicles the bonds of childhood friendship and their gradual breakdown.”

Here He Comes
Queens native Donald Trump has offered to buy the Miss America Beauty Pageant. The pageant is the longest running in history but has been seeing a decline in ratings so ABC dropped it. The Donald came to the rescue and plans to make the show more “watchable,” while maintaining its integrity.
Trump already owns the Miss USA and the Miss Universe pageants. It is not yet clear whether there will be a merger of the Miss USA and Miss America pageants.

Miramax No More
|
| Harvey Weinstein
|
The Queens-raised brothers who started one of the most successful film companies of the last few decades are steps away from backing out of the company they founded. Harvey and Bob Weinstein founded Miramax in 1979, and by 1993 the company was purchased by Disney for $75 million. The Weinsteins have been credited with bringing such films to the big screen as “Pulp Fiction,” “Chicago,” “Gangs of New York” and more.
Though Disney Chairman Michael Eisner, with whom the Weinsteins have often butted heads, is stepping down next year, Harvey and Bob are still planning to leave.
According to Variety, the Weinsteins will move on to form their own, new film studio.
Over Ruled
Rapper JA Rule, who is known for his charity work in Southeast Queens, accepted the rap last week in a Toronto courtroom, admitting to punching a man in the face in a Toronto nightclub in April 2004.
Rule (Jeffrey Atkins) pleaded guilty to simple assault and agreed to pay a $1,500 fine. Had the case gone to trial, Ja Rule would have faced assault with intent to cause bodily harm, for which a conviction would have landed him in jail.
“I’m just sorry about my actions,” the Queens-born rapper said of the incident, which occurred in the VIP room of La Rouge Nightclub. Ja Rule had been in Toronto filming “Assault on Precinct 13.”
Perhaps he took his role too literally.

Don’t Come Back
|
| Pat Stokes
|
Pat Stokes, president and CEO of Anhueser Busch, last December welcomed 6,000 distributors, ad and sales execs, vendors and other business associates to what he called “The biggest Christmas party ever in St. Louis.” At the party, he spoke of having recently been back to Queens, where he grew up.
“He rented a car at Kennedy Airport to take him to the old ‘hood, where he remembered his house as being fairly large,” said St, Louis Post-Dispatch Columnist Deb Peterson. “It couldn’t have been more than 20 feet wide,” he said with a laugh, adding that the house was not only smaller than his memory recalled but was also rundown like the rest of the neighborhood.
Thanks Pat. We in Queens will down some of your beer and wish you well for the holidays, too!
Imported brews sound better all the time.
