Taiwan To Flushing
|
|
Lily
Home: Flushing
Age: 27
Height: 5’ 3"
Weight: 120 lbs
Stats: 34-26-32
Talk about your modern success. Lily has just started modeling, but she has received dozens of offers, a results, she is sure, due to her ethnicity.
Lily, who hails from Taiwan, came to the United States a mere six months ago, and registered at onemodelplace.com about at the end of March after deciding to give modeling a try.
In the first week, she received 40 offers she told QConf, “I’m not sure why they love me so much – probably because I’m Asian. So maybe that’s why they’re interested.”
So why make a move from managing a VIM Jeans store to posing in front of a camera? “Because I’m interested in modeling,” Lily said rather honestly.
Though adapting to her new life in New York has been tough, Lily has managed pretty well without getting too homesick.
I like New York; it reminds me a lot of Taiwan – especially where I live in Flushing. It has a lot of Chinese people and Chinese food, and I love the fact that it reminds me of home.”
Though Lily uses the word “home” loosely; she has no intention of moving back to Taiwan. Her sister just joined her in Flushing, and the two of them are getting ready to tour the city.
We can’t wait to see the pictures.

| Cabbie & Cats Head West
|
| Cab driver Douglas Gukdeniz, l., poses with Bob, right, and Betty Matas and one of their cats at their home in Queens.
|
The borough’s most expensive cab ride hit the road last week, as Forest Hills’ Bob and Betty Matas packed up a yellow taxi with their life’s possessions plus two cats and embarked on a 2,500 mile journey to Sedona, Arizona, where they will retire.
What began as a joke with driver Douglas Gukdeniz during a routine trip from Manhattan to Forest Hills turned serious when the Turkish-born cabbie agreed to chauffeur the 70-somethings to the desert for a mere $3,000 plus gas and lodging. The Matas are getting a bargain: if the fare meter was allowed to run, the cross-country trek would cost $10,000.
But Gukdeniz is not doing it for the dough, but for the adventure. “I’m happy right now. I want to make something in my life different,” he told The Daily News. “When I retire, I want to say something to my grandkids: ‘I was on the news. I took a couple to Arizona.’”

From St. Albans To The NFL?
|
| St. Albans' Kevin Ogletree
|
For Holy Cross High School’s former football star Kevin Ogletree, the decision he made this month, was not an easy one. The St. Albans native who is finishing his third year at the University of Virginia playing football and possibly on his way to the NFL in another year, has been sidelined with a ligament tear for which he has chosen to have surgery.
The 6-foot-2 wide receiver caught 61 passes for 19 touchdowns and 1,170 yards in his senior year here, and has been making a name for himself on the Cavaliers.
The No. 1 receiver for the Cavs is confident that he’ll be able to be back on his feet and at the top of his game in time for this fall’s football season – and in time to show off for the NFL scouts.
Go get ’em.

Newsflash: Trump Not Sexy
|
| Donald Trump
|
In what may be the most shocking piece of celebrity information in the history of civilized society, Queens favorite wheeler-dealer Donald Trump has been named the number one “Unsexiest man in the World.”
In a list that includes Larry King, American Idol Contestant Sanjaya Malakar and the White House’s Karl Rove, Trump is apparently the top of the homely pile.
The list was compiled by thephoenix.com, an entertainment news Web site. Their reasons for putting the man they call a “loathsome billionaire” on the top of the list?
“It’s not the greed, the preposterous comb-over, or the public bullying that turns women off any more,” Trump’s blurb read. “It’s the pursed lips and the scrunched, pineal stare. Actually, scratch that: it’s still the hair, the greed, and the bullying.”

Record Book Up His Alley
|
| Bowling backwards, Ashrita Furman breaks his 145th Guinness record.
|
Queens’ Ashrita Furman, the holder of the most records in the Guinness Book of records, regained the record for backwards bowling at the AMF Van Wyck Lanes in Richmond Hill last week. This record is extremely difficult because, on every ball, the bowler must have his back facing the lanes away from the pins. Under the supervision of official witnesses Ashrita managed to bowl a 199 for a single game. Ashrita originally held the record with a score of 160 but last May Joe Scrandis, a bowling coach from Maryland, bowled a 175.
Regaining the record did not come easy. Ashrita started training for the record in November and for the last month has been spending at least two hours a day at the bowling alley practicing bowling backwards. It took Ashrita five games of warm up before he was able to refine his accuracy and finally break the record.
Once certified by Guinness, this will be Ashrita’s 145th Guinness record he has broken since 1979 and it will be the 62nd record that he holds currently. Other records held by Ashrita include somersaulting more than 12 miles, pogo stick jumping for 23 miles and juggling 3 balls continuously for 48 minutes underwater.
For more information about Ashrita’s records go to www.ashrita.com.
