Swan From Queens

Amanda Tucci
Home: Bayside
Age: 27
Height: 5’5’’
Weight: 109 lbs.
Stats: 34-25-32

Queens native Amanda Tucci never thought she would be able to show her stuff in front of a camera.

After all, the self-proclaimed “goofball” who loves making people laugh said that when she was attending Cardozo High School in Bayside as a teen, she was an “ugly duckling who was always being made fun of.”

But, boy, did things change.
Amanda said she “got rid of the braces, got rid of the glasses” and changed her image from the ugly duckling to runway and billboard model.

She said, “Now, when I model, it’s kind of like I’m showing people, ‘Look at me now!’”

You can catch a glimpse of the 27-year-old Bayside resident on billboards for Floral Terrace and Sand Castle Catering Hall, and she is currently crossing her fingers that she’ll get a gig modeling for the chain Love My Shoes.

She has also walked the runway in three fashion shows for Lithium Clothing in Manhattan.

She said she has been modeling on and off since age 18, but only recently started pursuing it professionally. She said, “I’m looking for an agency right now so I can take this a bit further.”

She said she loves modeling because, “I just think it’s fun. I get a kick out of seeing myself on a billboard. I know my family loves it. My grandfather in Florida loves it, I know it makes him really proud.”

She added, “It’s definitely not the money. What I’m doing now, local things, don’t pay very much.”

To pay the bills, Amanda guest bartends all over the borough. When she’s not flashing her smile or working, she admits to being attached to her computer.

She said, “I’m a computer nut. I love to be online, do computer work, programming. I would love to pursue a career in that. I just don’t know how to go about it. If I could sit in front of my computer all day, I’d be happy.”

Amanda, who's single, is also happy playing with her dogs Jack and Bella .

Amanda also has a soft spot for singing, and said she sang at Carnegie Hall when she was 13. She said, “I definitely want to stick with singing, acting, modeling. That’s what I like doing.”

Good Morning, New York!

Ooooppps! Tuesday's N Y Post!

New Yorkers woke up to major a scoop on the morning of July 6.

The New York Post plastered its front page with an "Exclusive" story of U.S. Congressman Dick Gephardt of Missouri as the running mate of presumptive Democratic Presidential candidate Senator John Kerry.

As the Post and the rest of the world found out just hours after their papers hit the street, Kerry had given the Veep nod to North Carolina Senator John Edwards who had battled Kerry for the presidential slot in the Democratic primaries.

Crediting "Post Wire Services," the Post's "Exclusive" continued with a page four un-bylined story explaining why Kerry picked Gephardt. It is not a common industry practice to fail to give credit to the reporter who broke the big story – and this one will be talked about as much as any story the Post has run since the famous, "Headless Body in Topless Bar," front page headline.

We wonder whether heads will now role in the Post newsroom?
And to our Trib alum at the Post, remember to duck!

A Leap Of Faith

The Reverend Floyd Flake after his slip up.

One of the most respected men in Southeast Queens is Reverend Floyd Flake, the pastor of the Allen AME Cathedral in Jamaica.

The former Congressman is known throughout the borough for his riveting sermons on the altar, his deep dedication to his community and his knack for developing social programs, jobs, work and educational programs for kids and adults alike.

But even top dogs like Flake slip up sometimes.
When Flake showed up at a St. John’s University business breakfast on crutches, he had to ‘fess up to a particularly embarrasing fall.

Apparently, one Sunday during services, Flake actually fell off of the pulpit and hurt himself.

Officials at Allen AME confirmed there had been an incident, but did not elaborate.

Guess the higher up you are the harder you fall.

Mayoral Snub

If you were the Republican mayor of New York City and Vice President Dick Cheney invited you to meet with him at a New York Yankees game, would you go?

If you are Mayor Mike Bloomberg, the answer is no.
Cheney extended the invitation to Bloomberg along with former Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Governor George Pataki – both of whom accepted.

Bloomberg blew off the Republican love fest, instead attending a meeting of the Bayside Hills Civic Association.

“He called and invited me to the baseball game, but I couldn’t go,” Bloomberg said. “We called him and said I can’t go, but if he had a few minutes, I’d just love to stop by and welcome him to New York. He said he’d be happy to fit it into his schedule.”

Bloomberg did meet with the Veep prior to the game, asking Cheney for more homeland security money, but exited the meeting saying “hid did not write out a check.”

Confusing Bureaucracy

Sometimes, the government just doesn’t know which end is up.
Take for example this report that was released by the Department of Sanitation at a meeting in Queens recently.

It’s a review copy that is not for review.
C'mon, is this a lesson in producing recycleables?

Mets Magic?

The weekend before last was when the Mets lost both games of a day-night double-header to the Yankees in the Bronx.

What made matters worse for the borough’s own Amazins was that two of the newest Mets, pitcher Jose Parra and catcher Tom Wilson, were wearing the wrong jerseys.

While the rest of their teammates wore their away jerseys that said “New York,” Parra and Wilson were both wearing home jerseys that said “Mets.”

It didn’t matter so much for Parra, who didn’t play, but Wilson was the backstop in game two and had to keep walking out on to the field in the wrong uniform.
According to the Mets, it was just a mix-up.
