Supermom

You could almost call her the superwoman of the Queens modeling world.

Gloria Ortiz, 34, is a part-time model, full-time mother, registered medical assistant and a part-time nursing school student at Queensborough Community College. How does she make the time?

When she’s not balancing her job with taking care of her sons, 13 and 5, and spending time with her husband of six years, Mario, she enjoys modeling shoots and recently auditioned for her first gig at a fashion show.

Ortiz modeled as a teenager and started again a year ago after taking her 16-year-old nephew to be professionally photographed. “It kinda talked me back into doing it,” she said.

Ortiz’s hobbies include dancing, which she studied for 18 years and taught for six.

Though she can’t name her favorite spot in the borough, it’s perhaps because she’s been here all her life and seen it all.

“I grew up here,” she said of Ozone Park. “I’m so used to it.”

As Seen On TV

Eddie's Pizza Owner Joe DiVittorio was recently featured in a new book based off of the HBO hit Entourage.

It’s in the water.

At least that’s what the characters in HBO’s comedy Entourage tell each other is the reason they can’t get a good pizza in Los Angeles.

In turn, Eddie’s Pizza located in New Hyde Park was featured in the new book “Entourage: A Lifestyle is a Terrible Thing to Waste” by HBO for its delicious New York pies.

The four characters play Queensite transplants in LA after one of them makes it big in the movie biz. In one episode, they curb their cravings by having Eddie’s Pizza airmail them three of its famous pies.

In reality, Eddie’s Pizza owner, Joe DiVittorio said he has shipped his products across the country to New York pizza loyalists for years.

“We’ve shipped products to Los Angeles, Florida and Boston,” DiVittorio said.

Eddie’s Pizza is located at 2048 Hillside Ave. in New Hyde Park and is open from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. seven days a week 365 days a year. To order, evidently from anywhere in the country, call (516) 354-9780.

See The Stones

“Shine a Light,” is the newest film from Flushing-born Martin Scorsese. The documentary focuses on two Rolling Stones shows performed at the Beacon Theatre in 2006 as part of the band’s a Bigger Bang Tour.

Scorsese may be most famous for his dramas, but the NYU grad has also worked on several documentaries on American popular music. Just last year, the filmmaker directed “No Direction Home,” a feature-length biography on the life of fellow Queensite Bob Dylan.

“Shine a Light” will be screened at IMAX theaters nationwide. Unfortunately, the director’s home borough of Queens doesn’t have an IMAX.

Queens Couple's Altar Laugh

Kathy Griffin is now in the marriage business after recently wedding a Bayside couple.

The actress, comedian and all around funny woman married Brian Anstey and Elka Shapiro in March in Queens in front of 100 delighted guests.

The happy couple are such big fans of Ms. Griffin, they wanted the red haired comedian to do their nuptials.
Shapiro, 29 is a marketing director who lives in Bayside. She told the Daily News she was happy with the results.
“Neither of us is affiliated with any particular religion, and the major factor in our relationship is laughter,” she said. “Kathy was fantastic and had us all in hysterics during the ceremony.”

Griffin obtained her license to marry, just before flying from Hollywood for the ceremony. She admitted her assistant did the actual printing of the certificate from an online ministry.

Anstey, 31, teaches fifth-graders in Harlem, said his students were excited to hear the news of the celebrity presiding over the ceremony.

“I’m looking forward to showing them our wedding photographs,” he said.

The event was held at the Queens County Farm Museum, and was filmed for the fourth season of Griffin’s reality TV show, “My Life on the D-List,” which pokes fun at her insignificant position in Hollywood. It is due to air on Bravo in June.

We hope the Queens couple is still laughing.

Queens Luck

Have you played the lotto religiously and at every turn your scratch off ticket reveals nothing but duds? Well you’re probably buying your tickets at the wrong place. A New York Daily News article revealed that five stores in Queens were among the top 10 when it comes doling out winners.

The top spot belongs to The Magazine Store on 31st Street in Astoria. Astoria Smoke Shop and Convenience on 30th Avenue smoked the competition and came in second. Queens Mini Market on Queens Boulevard in Sunnyside netted third on the list and rounding out the top 10 were Shri Hari Khrpa on Main Street in Flushing, which placed fifth and Orion NY, located on Union Street in Flushing, placed 10th.

Less Controversial Torch Run

A Jamaica, Queens based non-profit organization began the U.S. leg of its World Harmony Run last week, outside the United Nations building in Manhattan.

The run is the brainchild of the late Queens guru Sri Chinmoy, an Indian philosopher and Nobel Peace prize nominee who called Queens home. The annual torch relay encompasses 100 nations and all 50 states.

Nine-time Olympic gold medalist Carl Lewis, tennis champion Billie Jean King and Grammy award winning singer Roberta Flack helped kick-off the event beginning the torch’s U.S. tour.

“By carrying the Torch, millions of citizens are taking a step for Harmony and bridging the cultural and social boundaries that separate nation from nation,” Lewis said.
The event also featured musical performances, a parade of nations, lighting of torches for each continent and speeches.

The World Harmony Run is designed to encourage goodwill among the nations. An estimated 50,000 school children in over 1,000 cities and towns on the U.S. route are expected to participate as runners visit their schools.

The torch will return to New York in August to complete its
50-state journey.
