Strolling With Sabina

Sabina has an international flair and has been working for the last five months to parlay that into a career in modeling.

She has spent part of that time working for an alcoholic beverage company’s “Coolest Hair Contest,” touring the country. She also has done some work for a premium dark rum about to be introduced by a major label.

Introduced to the business by a photographer who just had to get her photos out there, Sabina is looking to turn modeling into a full-time gig.

“Definitely, it is my passion from now on,” she said. “I love acting and modeling. I have an opportunity to transfer to different images. Another reason I can see clearly doing a full time modeling is because of my trait of character which requires constant excitement and changes. When I am posing I get a rush, life drive, adrenaline; it is ecstasy.”

A professional make-up artist when not in front of the lens, Sabina goes to the Elite Academy of Beauty Arts.

“The reason I am taking these classes is because I have a high passion for esthetics in its all expressions,” she said. “I am on my way to make people beautiful, healthy looking and happy.”

“I was always attracted to art, nature and beauty in general,” she said. “I can’t stay indifferent if I see something that impresses me, like the rainbow of colors when the sun goes down or the moon path on the silently sleeping lake.”

When hanging out in Queens, Sabina loves to stroll the parks in Forest Hills, check out the Uzbek restaurants and particularly loves Austin Street during Christmas season.

We look forward to the chance meeting on a snowy night.

America's Top Model

For years, Queens has captured the world with its talent and prowess with acts such as Run DMC heating up the airwaves, 50 Cent taking to the “Candy Shop,” Francis Ford Coppola, Chairman of the Board Edward “Whitey” Ford striking out 1,956 major leaguers, Tony Bennett, Paul Simon and Bianca winning America’s Next Top Model.

Ok, the winners for America’s Next Top Model have yet to be announced, but Bianca, the lovely dark haired beauty from Queens, looks promising.

Bianca, 18, joins 12 other girls vying for the crown of America’s Next Top Model’s ninth season.

Jack the ‘Skip’per?

Rafer Alston

Cardozo High School alum and NBA star point guard Rafer Alston apparently is as quick with his hands as he is with his feet.

According to published reports, the Jamaica product allegedly slashed a man’s neck during an altercation at a Manhattan nightclub. He was arraigned on assault charges and released without bail.

This is the second time in the past month that Alston, dubbed “Skip to my Lou” by Rucker Park faithful due to his incredible speed and dribbling skills, has been in trouble with the law. Earlier in August he was arrested for misdemeanor assault and public intoxication in Houston.

Way to go, Skip. Now when a scouting report refers to you as a “slasher,” it may take on a deeper meaning.

John’s Back

Queens’ very own John Leguizamo, who moved to Jackson Heights with his family at the age of 4, is starring in a new series on Spike TV called “The Kill Point.”

His character, Mr. Wolf, is the leader of a small group of U.S. soldiers who recently returned home from serving in Iraq and band together to pull off a major bank heist in Pittsburgh, according to Spiketv.com. Things go awry and they’re forced to take more than a dozen hostages.

“Suddenly, Mr. Wolf finds himself battling the police, the hostages and members of his own team while, at the same time, fighting his own personal demons from the Iraq war and from his own war at home.”

Tennis Anyone?

You’re never too sweaty or active to be fashionable — or to show some love for New York.

At the U.S. Open in Flushing last week, Maria Sharapova debuted a Nike tennis dress adorned with the New York City skyline. The design was created with more than 600 Swarovski crystals placed around the neckline of the red dress.

The sleek creation was designed for her to wear when she plays at night at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center at Flushing Meadows Corona Park. During the day, she wears a simpler black dress.

Queens Long Distance Runner

Kara Goucher

As the IAAF World Championship 10K race came to a close, the usual suspects crossed the finish line. Ethiopia-born Tirunesh Dibaba, defending champion, came first. Next, there was Ethopia-born Elvan Abeylegesse. And then, there was Kara Goucher from Queens.

Goucher, 29, is the first American to win a medal in this event. She first gained national attention as a student at the University of Colorado where she was the NCAA Outdoor and Cross Country Champion.

In 2001, she wed fellow Colorado alum and long distance runner Adam Goucher.

Following several years away from racing, the two moved to Portland, Oregon to seek the coaching of Alberto Salazar.

Kara benefited immensely from the Salazar’s training and when she arrived in Osaka last week for the world championships, she adjusted to the Japanese food, posted on her blog (http://inside.nikerunning.com/the_gouchers) and then, with a time of 32:02:05, proudly accepted the bronze medal.
