Starting Out Lisa

Olesya Onofreychuk

Age: 20
Height: 5’ 6"
Weight: 125 lbs
Stats: 33-26-36

For years Olesya Onofreychuk — you may call her Lisa — has listened to the peanut gallery tell her “You have a very attractive face.” She has been told her features were unique and heard the relentless “why not try modeling?”
In August she did just that. She tried modeling.
“It’s not as easy as everyone says,” Lisa told QConf.
This Rochester, NY native said it took her years to come around because “I thought modeling was a joke.” She said now that she is immersed in the fashion world she said modeling isn’t just “striking a pose and smiling.”
Although she has yet to go on a professional shoot, Lisa said she likes modeling. As she is building her portfolio, she goes by Lisa because she likes to keep it short.
When not striking a pose in front of the camera Lisa is a receptionist but hopes to leave the worlds of coffee runs and embark in a fulltime career as a model.
Lisa moved to Flushing in January to be closer to her boyfriend.
“He is happy for me,” she said. Lisa likes Flushing and her favorite place is taking it easy at home.
When not working or modeling Lisa said she likes to stay active. Her hobbies include jogging, working out, sports and living a little on the wild side by riding motorcycles.
Lisa said modeling is a really good learning experience. “You learn a lot about the industry,” she said.

Queens Boulevard – The Musical

The Off-Broadway musical “In the Heights,” set in the Manhattan neighborhood of Washington Heights, will make the transfer to Broadway in February.
This month, the Signature Theatre Company will mount “Queens Boulevard (the Musical).” Charles Mee, the theatre’s 2007-2008 Playwright-in-Residence, wrote the musical, which was inspired by an Indian Katha-Kali play. Set on the Boulevard, the plot follows a young man’s urban adventure on his wedding day.
According to Signature’s Web site, Mee is known for “radical reconstructions of existing texts and his inimitable collage-like style of playwriting.” He has received two OBIE Awards, a Laura Pels Foundation Award, a TCG grant and a lifetime achievement award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
If the piece is well-received, it could very well make the transfer. “Queens Boulevard”on Broadway. Imagine that.
The musical runs through Dec. 30. For more information, visit: signaturetheatre.org/onstage.htm

Timing Is Everything

Richard Parsons

Citigroup has stumbled in recent weeks, admitting major losses tied to the sub-prime lending market. With a total potential loss of some $55 billion admitted at the same time that Chief Executive Officer Charles Prince lost his job, the board of directors is struggling to find the correct person to right this buffeted ship.
One possible contender is already a board member, has been appointed as one of the three-member team set with the task of finding a replacement for Prince and happens to be a Queens guy who just quit his job as the head of TimeWarner.
Yes, Richard Parsons, who many speculated might enter the fray for Mayor in 2009 as a wildcard candidate a la the current Hizzoner, is now being bandied about as an option to help the people who own the tallest tower in Queens.
It’ll be fun to see how this one plays out, especially with Parsons’ denial of interest in either position.

A-Rod-den Idea

Alex Rodriquez

Yes, it’s true. The Mets sat down with super-agent Scott Boras to hear his pitch on signing Yankee slugger Alex Rodriguez but likely will not sign him.
According to many published reports, the meeting was more out of courtesy for the agent as the Mets probably want other players Boras represents or will represent.
Signing A-Rod would necessitate moving Gold-gloved David Wright to first base or booting the equally apt Jose Reyes, which, playoff-breakdown or not, is a silly idea.
Mets General Manager Omar Minaya is more likely hoping to shore up his pitching staff after the Atlanta Braves pounced on talks with Mets lefty Tom Glavine.
Rumor has it, the Mets are hoping to persuade Japanese right-hander Hiroki Kuroda from across the Pacific but, again, the rumor mill is still churning on that one.

Different Methods

It’s hard enough being a prepubescent wide-eyed teenager, but when you have to dodge barbs and books from both bullies and teachers, acne is no longer the number one problem.
Substitute Teacher Syed Abdullah, 68, was charged with third-degree assault, reckless endangerment, endangering the welfare of a child and harassment, when he allegedly threw a book at an unruly target, um student.
Abdullah missed his intended target and hit another student in the back of the head. The student was taken to a local hospital with swelling and pain. While schools in the United States does not allow capital punishment in Abdullah’s native Bangladesh, spare the rod and spoil the child just doesn’t fly.

Dope Boy Bagged… Finally

The Feds picked up the pizza a few weeks ago at JFK International Airport.
The Pizza Man, to be exact.
According to the New York Post, Enrico Frigerio, a reputed player in the infamous “Pizza Connection” heroin trafficking operation of 1980s, was pinched by government suits as he stepped off a flight returning from Switzerland. He had been on the run for 20 years.
The “Pizza Connection” utilized pizza parlors across the country to distribute billions of dollars worth of heroin. A major part of the operation that had arms in Switzerland, Turkey and Italy was run through parts of Ridgewood and Middle Village.
Queens has long been lauded for its delicious pizza. Now you know what made it so special.

Dude!

Queens has long been recognized as one of the major epicenters of hip hop culture. It is our borough’s vernacular that makes its way into popular songs and then affects slang used across the country.
As it turns out, Queens may be the birthplace of American slang in general. In his book “How the Irish Invented Slang,” Daniel Cassidy, 63, writes about the Irish- immigrant community he knew as a kid in Queens and all the words that have made their way into the mainstream American lexicon. Dude, scram and dig – to name a few – derive from the Irish language. The book, which was awarded the 2007 American Book Award for nonfiction last month, contains a complete list.
Although Cassidy’s Irish roots are in Queens, he now lives in San Francisco where he directs the Irish Studies program at New College.
