Slam Dunk Stunner

Most models would rather die before wearing pajamas to an audition. But when Marija Kero stumbled upon a casting call for a Knicks fan commercial, she elbowed her way into the casting wearing Knicks pajamas, an orange wig and team slippers, while toting her Knicks towels, jerseys, shirts, shorts, cheer sticks and even a team pillow. She nabbed the part, of course, and it turned out to be an ideal role for the Astoria model.

The die-hard sports fan is so passionate about her hobby that she has parlayed it into a career. A former math teacher, Marija now works in the sales department for the Harlem Wizards, a basketball team that interjects theatrics into all of their games. She also maintains a popular fan blog about the Knicks and, when she is isn’t busy modeling, is working on a book about retired Knick Allan Houston.

Marija, who started modelling three years ago, has worked as a promotional model for Bulldog Gin, Silk Vodka and Miller Light and has also walked the runway and done print. She recently worked on a fitness shoot for Supermodels Unlimited Magazine and has acted in a web series called “El Lobo Rojo.”

“I did focus on modeling full-time for a little while, but I’m realistic and I know that there is a limit to how long you can be in this business so I never took my eye off my other passions in life – teaching and sports,” she said.

Marija is single-handedly debunking several model myths – including one about their refusal to eat anything that contains more calories than a rice cake.

“I love the festivals every fourth Sunday on Ditmars,” she said, referring to her neighborhood. “I can get delicious sausage and corn on the cob. I love that there are so many great places to eat – hands down – this is the best borough to eat in. Within a three-block radius, I can get great sushi, Greek, Italian, Mexican or Middle Eastern delicacies.”

“I love Queens because it’s home to Nas. I love the European feel of the strip of outside cafes on 30th Avenue in Astoria. I love my rooftop view of Manhattan. And ya gotta love the Queens accent!”

Email From Africa?

Just before the recent election, an odd request for help came from somebody known to the Tribune. The e-mail came from the private Hotmail account of political operative Donovan Richards, who ran unsuccessfully for Assembly this year.

His email said in part: “How are you doing today? I am sorry I didn’t inform you about my traveling to Africa for a program called Empowering Youth . . . I am really stranded in Nigeria because I forgot my little bag in the Taxi where my money, passport, documents and other valuable things were kept. . . I need you to help me with the hotel bill and I will also need $1,250 to feed and help myself back home so please can you help me with a sum of $2,300 to sort out my problems here?”

Followed were instrucions to send money via Money Gram or Western Union.

We never responded, mostly because we spoke with Richards that same day from Southeast Queens. He was glad to hear about the problem, and not to worry, he’s back online.

And he and you should proceed with care.

Veggie Options

The Web site Super Vegan asked the people of Queens to rank the top five vegetarian-friendly restaurants in Queens – and Forest Hills won! Just kidding, everyone wins because eating vegetarian is healthy.

Of the five restaurants only one, Tierra Sana in Forest Hills, is strictly-vegetarian and came in at No. 5. Peking Duck, also in Forest Hills, grabbed the top spot with its much-raved about vegetarian options.

Mundo Café in Astoria came in at No. 2. Sunnyside’s De Mole was No. 3 boasting its seitan burrito with tofu sour cream and Sripraphai Thai Restaurant in Woodside was No. 4.

Got a beef with this list?

Beef, it’s not for dinner. Who knew?

Making A Willets Point

As Council Members faced the vote that would approve the City’s plan for the overhaul and development of Willets Point last Thursday, many took the opportunity to weigh in on the jobs created, on the workforce redevelopment programs, on the solutions to bring in affordable housing and on the concerns raised by eminent domain.

There was one councilman from Brooklyn who spoke positively, though slightly off topic, about the Willets Point area, adjacent to the new home of the New York Mets.

“I fully support the plan to bring to Willets Point Manny Ramirez, a good second baseman and a reliable bullpen,” said Lew Fidler. “And I’d put my support behind using eminent domain for that.”

Finally, we agree with Fidler.

Queens Actor Doesn’t Bite

Don’t say “bite me” to Peter Facinelli. His latest role requires him well, not bite.

The Queens native plays the patriarch of an immortal family continuously fighting its natural urge to bite necks. He’s the head of a clan of vegetarian vampires, in “Twilight.”

Facinelli told Premier his original inclination was to turn a vampire movie down.

“All the ones that I’d seen are all blood and guts and gore – more like zombie films than the mystical tale of the vampire, which is where it originated.”

But with such a unique plot, who could say no?

The film is based on a blockbuster series of books by Stephanie Meyer and hits theaters Nov. 21.

Sign Language

On Francis Lewis Boulevard Between Jamaica Avenue and 94th Avenue , a bright yellow sign, bolted to a electric pole reads, “Road Narrows.” Really!!!

Top Chefs Descend On Queens

Top Chef: New York’s premiere last Wednesday played more like Top Chef: Queens as the contestants canvassed the borough’s diverse neighborhoods for ingredients.

Four of the eight neighborhoods assigned to the competing chefs were all right here in Queens: Long Island City for Middle Eastern food; Ozone Park for Latin American food; Jamaica for Jamaican food and Astoria for Greek food.

The chefs poured through local grocery stores searching for authentic ethnic ingredients to supply their impending culinary battle.

Top Chef: New York airs Wednesdays on Bravo at 10 p.m.
