Sin City Sweetheart

Desiree Diaz
Raised: Jamaica
Age: 25
Weight:105 lbs.
Height: 5’1’’
Stats: 34C-24-33

When a family friend suggested that sexy Queens native Desiree Diaz attend an open call for a modeling position several years ago, she knew she would be up against some stiff competition.

But the girl from Queens prevailed over pros including a former Miss Argentina and was selected to represent “BellSouth” in their 2002 company annual report.
“Now, I realize this is not exactly winning the lottery, but when I was chosen for the job over a former beauty contestant, I was simply amazed.”

Desiree – who describes herself as “very laid back” – has already appeared in dozens of advertisements, with highlights including work as a Fantana Girl for the Coca-Cola Company, ads for Wal-Mart, the cover of Rumba Magazine and the cover of a CD for the band Adelayda.

She also has her own website, www.desireeonline.com, which has dozens of photos of her in everything from bikinis to lingerie to jeans. She is also currently putting the finishing touches on her 2005 16-month calendar, and is working with several agencies on print and commercial campaigns in her new home of Las Vegas.

Her father's work took her family from Queens to Atlanta in 1993. “It was very difficult in the middle of high school leaving all my friends and being forced to start all over in a town where I did not know a soul. It was a real culture shock . . . everyone looked at me like I was from Mars.”

She still has “lots of” relatives in the borough and said “I love it. I spent my life growing up and making great friends there.”

When this busy beauty does get a few free seconds, she said she likes to “sleep, or when I have the energy, shop!” What she doesn’t have time for, she said, is a boyfriend. She said she is “just too busy for a serious relationship right now,” but added that when she does have time to date, she will look for someone who can make her laugh.

She also said that when the modeling gig is behind her, she plans to stay in the world of fashion. She said, “One thing I actually enjoy more then modeling is doing make-up. I have done several small fashion shows and I actually enjoy being behind the camera more then in front of it. I am sure that is what I will be doing once I am done modeling.”

She added, “I don’t take life or my work too seriously. I save that for the really important things in life like friends and family.”

Off To The Reality Races

Move over Rocco. There are two new reality television stars from Queens – and they get to hang out with a supermodel.
Shawn A. Smith, a teacher from Rosedale, and Alvin S. Guthrie, an administrative assistant from South Ozone Park, will make up one of two teams on the fourth episode of Spike TV’s new reality series “10 Things Every Guy Should Experience.”

Each week, the show features a celebrity host and two sets of two guys battling it out in various sports-related competitions. In the episode set to air on May 10 at 11 p.m., the four guys will be competing in horse racing related events to win coveted tickets and VIP access to the Kentucky Derby.

The host for this installment will be Rachel Hunter, the renowned actress and supermodel.

Who will the two Queens guys be competing against?
Jeremy Kinder, an art director from New Jersey and Todd Ahern, a sales executive from Manhattan.

Go Queens!

Apprentice!

Mazel tov to the unassuming Jamaica Estates native who has gone on to make a name for himself with the recent reality show mega hit “The Apprentice.” The Queens kid who is named after a casino, a hotel and a batch of impressive buildings was recently engaged to the third future ex Mrs. Trump, Melania Knauss, a Slovenian model, who is young enough to be his daughter . . . and a Mrs. Donald Apprentice!

Tea Time With Tony

That Councilman Tony Avella – he’s good.
He’s so good, in fact, that he doesn’t even know it.
Avella held a modern day “Boston Tea Party” on April 22 to protest sky-high city, state and federal taxes on things like beer, wine, spirits, gasoline and cell phone use.
He threw symbolic tea boxes into Little Neck Bay, each labeled with a city, state or federal tax. He said afterwards, “You don’t realize how many taxes there really are. It’s unbelievable.”

You know what else Tony didn’t realize?

He held the mock tea party on April 22, 2004 – exactly 230 years to the day after colonists in New York copied their Boston counterparts and actually threw tea into New York Harbor in protest of King George’s tea tax.
That’s right, four months after the Bostonians made history with their tea party, New Yorkers did the same thing on April 22, 1774.

Avella said, “I had no idea. It was just a coincidence . . . Everyone knows the famous tea party in Boston, but there was one in New York. Someone told me that afterwards, and I couldn’t believe it. I mean, isn’t that weird?”

‘Supersized’ Councilman

A promo for the movie "Supersize Me."

Queens Councilman Eric Gioia celebrated his 31st birthday recently with dinner and a movie – but the screening was far from run of the mill.

The birthday boy joined his New York University roommate, Morgan Spurlock, director of the documentary “Supersize Me,” for the film’s Manhattan premiere. The new documentary, which won raves at recent film festivals, chronicles a month during which Spurlock ate nothing but food from McDonald’s restaurants on a tour across the country to interview experts on America’s obesity epidemic.

For the four-week long film shoot, he lived by three simple rules: only eat what is over the counter at the Golden Arches, only “supersize” when it is offered and eat everything on the menu at least once. The result took a toll on Spurlock’s health, resulting in weight gain and harrowing trips to the doctor.

Following the screening, the filmmaker joined Gioia for a birthday dinner. The fare, served up at the hip restaurant Lotus, was just a cut above an Extra Value Meal.
Happy Birthday Eric!

Look What I Found!

Met Jeff Duncan checks things out. photo: Nicole Burdett

It’s Mets opening day and you’ve been introduced, you’re standing on “the line,” and you’re anticipating an exciting game in front of thousands of fans.

But you should also be aware of the many cameras pointed in your direction.

This Met obviously wasn’t. It seems Jeff Duncan is making sure everything is there and in tip-top shape before the big game. An appropriate time to check would be in the locker room, or even at home.

We hope that everything is okay, Jeff, and that the next inspection be done in the locker room!
Next time, remember to smile.
