Shooting Sky High

For many models, a goal, secret or otherwise, is to land in the venerated pages of Playboy magazine. Reby Sky, who gave us the honor of being the first publication to write her story to our this page just two years ago, did just that over the summer.

“I was friends with the guy that shot the pictorial,” she said in a recent interview. “They were looking for natural looking girls; more brunettes, natural boobs. They were looking for people who look native to Montauk.”

The shots of Reby laying on the sand and cavorting in the surf have turned into a huge career boost for this Rego Park gal, who has seen her career take a giant leap forward in just the last few months.

“I have at least one other shoot with them, and hopefully another after that,” she said. “I got a few offers for a TV show, and a lot of my commercial work has gotten up. Being a Playboy model is a prestigious title. It has meant a lot more traveling for me.”

Reby thanks QConf regular Steve Azzarra as the one photographer who put her in the right direction. “He is one of the people I have to thank the most,” Reby said. “His was my first nude shoot. If I hadn’t posed for him I don’t know what direction I would have gone in. If I hadn’t started that early I wouldn’t have had the confidence to do Playboy.”

Reby has taken to getting behind the lens when she has some free time, building a portfolio of other models so that when she no longer has the stuff to get in front of the camera, she still will have a career in glamour. At 21, she’s concerned that her top days may be drawing to a close sooner rather than later.

“Time is running out,” she joked. “I’m almost done.”

Not, however, before she has a chance to soak in the grotto at the Playboy Mansion. Though she has had a brief talk on the phone with “Hef,” she has yet to make it out to the house.

She said she would rather wait until she can go out with the photographer who shot her for Playboy. “Otherwise,” she said, “I’d just feel like some gawky chick from Queens.”

Head-ed to the Hall

Mr. Met, outside the stadium, enjoys some of the local flavor.

Drop this in the “I didn’t even know there was a Hall of Fame for them” file.

It was recently announced that Mr. Met, the wildly popular and seemingly omnipresent mascot of the Amazins, will be inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame.

Yes, this is real.

In an online race conducted on www.mascothalloffame.com, the Coyote, mascot for the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs, beat Mr. Met by a count of 43,283 to 42,900, but according to published reports, the Hall of Fame’s Executive Committee decided both should be awarded the honor. Bringing up the rear end of the were New Orleans Hugo the Hornet, Seattle Mariner Moose and Baltimore's Oriole Bird.

Sufferin’ Sufjan

Tickets are on sale for Sufjan Stevens’ newest composition titled “The BQE.”

Indie rock’s most acclaimed and extravagant composer will perform his musical interpretation of the expressway at 8 p.m. Nov. 1, 2 and 3 at the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Howard Gilman Opera House.

The work was commissioned for BAM’s 25th New Wave Festival.

According the Stevens’ record label, Asthmatic Kitty Records, “The BQE” will be accompanied by a “visual travelogue” of the expressway and surrounding areas shot on 16mm and Super 8.

Stevens’ also will perform new and old songs after his roadway rhapsody. For more information visit www.bam.org or call (718) 636-4100.

50’s Retirement

50 Cent may have to apply for early retirement and brandish an AARP card because it seems that his remarks regarding outselling “The College Dropout,” AKA Kanye West, may haunt him all the way to retirement.

Fiddy, a Jamaica native, said he would retire from the rap game if Kanye West’s album, “Graduation,” outsold his “Curtis” record.

Early projections state West’s “Graduation” will sell between 575,000 to 700,000 its first week out and “Curtis” is lagging way behind with 550,000. According to Nielsen Soundscan, both albums hit stores on Sept. 11 and West has sold 437,000 and 50 Cent 310,000 copies.

Please, no tears for Fiddy. He still has his Vitamin Water deal to fall back on.

Romance and Cigarettes

Turturro's Romance and Cigarettes shouts Queens.

John Turturro’s new film, “Romance and Cigarettes,” is set in his home-borough of Queens. And unlike so many directors who haphazardly select a cast without taking into consideration place of origin, Turturro has enlisted a wide range of Queens talent including Susan Sarandon and Christopher Walken.

“Romance and Cigarettes,” showing only at Manhattan’s Film Forum theater, is getting rave reviews.

Stephen Holden of the New York Times writes, “Mr. Turturro’s third film as a director, might also be described as a song-and-dance ‘Sopranos,’ minus the crime and punishment and without most of the profanity.”

After appearing in Spike Lee’s homage to Brooklyn, “Do the Right Thing,” and then appearing in ESPN’s “The Bronx is Burning,” it’s great to see Turturro giving a nod to his roots, which has been lacking since he played Herb Stempel in “Quiz Show.”

Joel At Shea

The Piano Man is coming to Queens.

It was announced recently that Billy Joel will play Shea Stadium some time in the future. No dates or number of shows have been set yet.

Joel has already played Yankee Stadium in 1990 and the event was recorded in concert movie “Live at Yankee Stadium.”

A six-time Grammy winner, Joel is a singer, pianist and songwriter. He released his first hit song “Piano Man” in 1973. The last time Joel played Shea, it was to welcome the team home from Houston to kick off the 1986 World Series.

Eddi's poker bracelet created for Feather Falls

Queens Connection

A Ridgewood jeweler who has made his name by making custom jewelry has another Queens guy to thank for his latest exposure.

Jordan Eddi has been picked by Donald’s Trump’s Taj Mahal in Atlantic City to make the champion’s bracelet for the 2007 USPC Poker Championship.

For those in the competitive circuit, wearing a championship bracelet is akin to a Super Bowl or World Series ring – it (besides the money) is the ultimate goal.

“This is, by far, one of the highpoints of my career as a jewelry manufacturer,” said Eddi, a 20-year industry veteran and poker enthusiast. “I am doing something I truly enjoy, and working with prestigious clients like the Trump Organization has been very exciting.”

This is not Eddi’s first foray into poker jewelry. Earlier this year he created a champ’s bracelet for the Feather Falls casino in California.
