Saskia Slaaf
Home: East Elmhurst
Age: 28
Height: 5’9"
Stats: 34-24-34
A Queens model is doing big things to American magazines. Saskia Slaaf is conquering the modeling and acting scene in America. Originally from the Netherlands, Saskia moved to the United States when she was 4. An actress first, good fortune led Saskia to modeling.
“A photographer saw me and sent me to an agency, and the next thing I know I’m shooting for French Vogue. I kind of fell into it,” said Saskia.
“It’s great to be a model. I get to travel the world. I’ve been able to live in New York, London, Japan, and Amsterdam – why would I give it up?” Saskia asks. “I get car service anywhere I go, apartments, and I get to meet a lot of interesting people. I’ve met people like P. Diddy, Sean William Scott, and Mark Whalberg,” she said.
“My favorite shoot was for Italian Vogue. I got to work with Steven Meisel, a most famous photographer. I’ve been in almost every magazine,” she says. “The only one that I haven’t been in, that I would like to, is Vanity Fair.”
When Saskia is not modeling she likes to paint with oils. “People really like it,” she says of her art. “I might show them in a gallery in SoHo.” She also likes to dance, and added, “I’ve been sleeping a lot, too.”
As for future plans, “I would really like to be a full-time working actress, with modeling backing me up. I was just cast for a new movie coming out called ‘God’s Forgotten House,’ and I was also in the movie ‘Rules of Attraction,’ where I played a model.”
As a model and an actress, Saskia’s future looks bright. Watch for her on a screen near you.

| A Possible Truce?
|
| MC Jin and John Liu
|
With all the ballyhoo that has been going on with the “Tsunami Song” that Hot97 aired in January – and Councilman John Liu and others calling for millions of dollars in reparations from Emmis Communications, the parent company of Hot97, there may have been the beginnings of a truce created last weekend.
On Saturday, Feb. 5, Hot97 Morning Show co-host Miss Info and Queens’ Asian DJ superstar Jin Da MC were scheduled to appear together at a Manhattan benefit to raise funds for tsunami disaster relief.
In the weeks since Hot97 got itself into hot water over its tasteless parody, Jin has been on the air at the radio station working to promote disaster relief. He was joined at the fund-raiser, held at Capitale on Bowery Street, by Japan’s biggest DJ, DJ Honda.
There’s no telling yet how much money was raised, but the spirit of Hot97 and the Asian community coming together to help with cash after the radio station hurt so many with its words seems a good step in the right direction.

Trump: The Musical?
Money talks, but can it sing and dance? New Yorkers could find out soon if the show based on Donald Trump’s reality TV-show gets turned into “The Apprentice: The Musical.”
The project is being spear-headed by producer Mark Barrett, but according to the Donald, “Every producer on Broadway wants to get involved with this.” And why not?
Office gossipers get more than a mouthful of fodder each week from the show. The cut-throat competition features long-legged blondes and square-jawed gents who fight tooth and nail to win a six-figure job with The Donald.
The Jamaica Estates native expressed hope that the musical can do to Broadway what he has done for television drama. When asked who should play him on stage, The Donald said, “I don’t care if he can act, I just want him to be great looking.”

Queens ‘Survivor’
|
| Queens Survivor Tom Westman
|
When the newest edition of the CBS hit show “Survivor” begins Feb. 17 at 8 p.m., a Queens man will be one of the contestants vying for the $1 million prize.
Tom Westman, who just turned 41 Jan. 4, may live in Sayville now, but the Brooklyn Firefighter was born and raised in Queens and still keeps true to his Queens roots.
Tom went to Archbishop Molloy High School, where he served as a teen mentor and set a record as a member of the track team. His 14-foot, 6-inch long jump record set in 1982 was held for 20 years.
Though he found his niche in the FDNY, he has not limited himself. He is currently attending Queens College, where he is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in History.
Another Queens “Survivor,” Robert DeCanio, was on the show when they were set in the Marquesas Islands, but was voted out well before the final three. We hope for all the best for Mr. Westman.

Making Law
|
| Ada Smith
|
When a State Senator from Brooklyn faced a minor media tempest last month, following allegations that he punched a police officer in the face during a dispute over a ticket, it was highly predictable that the pugilistic pol might find an ally in State Senator Ada Smith.
In a sense, Senator Kevin Parker joined Smith’s strange club when he apparently opted to contest a traffic ticket with his fists. Smith has had a number of semi-violenmt run ins with authority figures, including one last year when she drove through a parking lot checkpoint nearly running over over an Albany security guard.
But the two politicians share more than a taste for outbursts of violence. Smith, it seems, has signed on as a co-sponsor of legislation put forth by Parker that would erase records of their embarrassing misdeeds.
Just days after he faced charges of third-degree assault, Parker introduced the “Clear Your Good Name Act.” If passed, the bill would force law enforcement agencies to destroy arrest records associated with cases where, among other things, people are never brought up on formal charges.
Failure to destroy these arrest records in a timely fashion – or, say, to prevent the leaking of embarrassing details to the media—would become a felony under the terms of the proposed law.
A felony, that is, for the cops.

Looking Good?
|
| Corona's John Leguizamo
|
Things are looking good for Jackson Heights funnyman John Leguizamo, who was recently named to a list of the 50 hottest Latinos. The actor-comedian took the news with a grain of salt when asked about it during a recent television interview.
Why the shy act from the pretty-boy?
He barely made the list.
Leguizamo was number 50.

From Russia With Love
|
| Francis Ford Coppola
|
Russian President Vladamir Putin praised Francis Ford Coppola, the director of “The Godfather” and producer of “Lost in Translation” and former Woodside resident, yesterday when the two met for tea. Putin thanked Coppola not only for his movie “The Godfather,” which is extremely popular in Russia, but also for the accurate depiction of war he recreates in films like “Apocalypse Now.” Coppola praised the president back for his words on the 60th anniversary of Auschwitz’s liberation by Soviet troops and for Putin’s expression of shame for Russia’s once-anti-Semitic atmosphere.
Coppola gave Putin a DVD of Lost in Translation, which won his daughter Sofia Coppola an Oscar last year for original screenplay.
Coppola was then awarded the Golden Eagle award in a ceremony from Russia’s National Academy of Cinematic Arts and Sciences for his contribution to world cinematography.
No matter where you go, even all the way to Russia, there are always one-time-residents of Queens getting awarded for their achievements or contributions to the world.
