Sabrina, The Teenage Wiz
|
|
Sabrina Brown Home: Woodhaven Age: 19 Height: 5’ 8" Weight: 125lbs Stats 32-26-36
At the ripe old age of 19, Sabrina is embarking on a new career or two or three.
This soft-toned beauty who originally hails from Richmond Hill is working with a couple of “older friends” to open a model management company and was recently published in “Up & Coming” magazine reviewing her first novel, “Set Up,” which is due to hit bookstores this spring.
Sabrina will serve as the face of the company, the name of which we can’t divulge because the trademark has not yet been finalized. This is quite a departure from her runway and video work she’s been doing for the last six months and the plans she has to get more extra and walk-on parts in movies.
Right now Sabrina goes to school in the evening, and when she’s not too busy she tries to attend open mic nights to hear poets, and she also likes to do hair and make braids. “I spend a lot of time on myspace networking, and I spend a lot to time with my mom.”
This young rising star also enjoys spending her free time at the Queens Center Mall or just going to the movies. With all that keeps her busy, Sabrina also likes to get out to Forest Park every now and then to unwind.
“I like going to Forest Park because it’s peaceful,” she said. “I can really think about things.”

| LL Cool J Gives Diddy A New Crib
|
| Cool J's gift to Diddy's girls
|
Queens homeboy rapper/actor LL Cool J gave fellow rapper P. Diddy’s twin girls, D’Lila Star and Jessie James, an extremely generous gift according to In Touch and People.com.
Diddy and his long time girlfriend Kim Porter who have been in an on-again off-again relationship got back together after J-Lo dumped the rapper.
Kim welcomed him back after she told him long ago that he’d be back when he dumped her for J-Lo.
Anyhoo, for the couple’s “Little Miss Diddy’s Pretty in Pink” baby shower, Cool J got each of the babies a cream colored custom-made crib from Ga Ga Designs.
The babies each received a $2,250 French Ancestry Cherubini Crib. The cribs were on Diddy’s baby registry, along with an $88,000 Mercedes.
We’re not sure who the Mercedes would have been for or if that gift was even purchased.
Diddy and Kim welcomed their little bundles of joy Dec. 21.

Linked Forever
|
| Hip hop & Queens booked
|
Hip-Hop and Queens have gone hand-in-hand since well before the days of Run-DMC and LL Cool J. The music style was already popular on the streets, as was another street favorite – drugs.
It comes as no surprise to many that the hip-hop and drug scenes of Southeast Queens are inexorably linked.
“Queens Reigns Supreme : Fat Cat, 50 Cent, and the Rise of the Hip Hop Hustler” by Ethan Brown draws the clear picture between drug lords Lorenzo “Fat Cat” Nichols, Gerald “Prince” Miller and Kenneth “Supreme” McGriff, the murder of Officer Ed Byrne, and the rise of hip-hop stars Nas, Ja Rule, Run-DMC and 50 Cent and the death of Jam Master Jay.
More than just a West Coast-East Coast thing, the connection of violence and crime to hip-hop goes back to the music form’s earliest roots, and is all documented inside the book.
Hmmm; some legacy for the borough.

| 50 Cent's "Once Upon A Time In Southside Queens"
|
Home is where the heart is—but don’t expect Jamaica native Curtis Jackson (aka 50 Cent) to get all mushy about it. The rap artist launched a new line of books called: From Pieces To Weight: Once Upon a Time in Southside Queens, where he chronicles growing up on the mean streets of Queens, the inspiration for songs like “In My Hood” and “Corner Bodega,” where he references the “do-you-got-beef” borough.
Fitty told a music Web site of the new books: “The stories in the G-Unit series are the kind of dramas me and my crew have been dealing with our whole lives: death, deceit, double-crosses, ultimate loyalty and total betrayal. It’s about our life on the streets and no one knows it better than us.”
If rapping doesn’t work out, sounds like Fitty would also make a great beat reporter.

Finding Direction
|
| Trevon "Pops" Hughes
|
Trevon “Pop” Hughes knew that if he stayed on the streets of Queens, his life might take a turn in the wrong direction – so he left for military school and is now a starting guard at the University of Wisconsin – Madison.
“He really matured, and a large part is due to the background and what he had to go through in a day-in and day-out basis in military school,” said UW recruiter Greg Gard. “With his background and where he’s come from, he has seen every way of life. So for him to have somebody or a staff that was going to be honest and truthful with him, I think that was the biggest thing that probably helped us [recruit him].”
In his last season at St. John’s Northwestern Military Academy, Hughes led the Lancers to their first-ever playoff berth and was a first-team all-state selection by The Associated Press, averaging 22.2 points, 5.9 rebounds, 5.7 assists and 4.8 steals per game.
Hey Pop, now that you’ve matured, be sure to drop by for a little one-on-one back in the hood.

Librarian Of The Year!
The New York Times recently announced the 25 national winners of its 2006 Librarian Awards. Jillian O’Shea, Children’s Librarian at Fresh Meadows Community Library, was chosen the winner from the Queens Library system as Librarian of the Year.
O’Shea was honored with the other 25 winners at a recent awards ceremony and reception. She received a commemorative plaque and a check for $2,500. The Fresh Meadows Library also received a separate plaque with Jillian O’Shea’s name and title to put on display.
Nominated by a former Fresh Meadows Library Book Buddies volunteer-turned-library page Melissa Long, O’Shea was cited for “her cheerful encouragement and patience with all youth, her wit, humor and innovative ideas for enhancing children’s library experience.”
“I have been Fresh Meadows Children’s Librarian for over six years and the families that I serve have become as close as my own,” O’Shea said.
“I am fortunate to be a part of a world-renowned organization and a great community and to work with people, like Melissa, who care so much about me… And I know it sounds corny, but I love my job.”
Sounds great to us. Keep up the good work.
