Rebecca Beckons
|
|
Rebecca Wilmer, who moved to Bayside a few months ago from Pittsburgh, has been modeling since she was 18.
She still is getting her feet wet in Queens, but already loves her new-found borough.
“I’m from the country; I grew up on seven acres, and I didn’t want to transition into living in a closet,” Rebecca said. “Where I live now people have yards. It’s nice living in an area with open space.”
Her modeling work has been pretty steady, even back in Pittsburgh. “I had an agent out there, and I did a lot of promotional modeling as well as some portfolio work for photographers on the side.” Now, she’s making her way through the New York modeling scene.
When not in front of the camera, Rebecca works making TV commercials for clients including AFLAC, Continental, Kodak and Swiffer.
“I’m learning to become a producer,” she said, but is also taking modeling and acting classes in order to keep current and to prepare herself for when the modeling dies down.
With a degree in marketing and a minor in Spanish and international business, Rebecca fell into her current position by good timing.
“My goal right now is trying to get signed. I’ve worked on campaigns with an agency in LA, I’m working for gaming companies,” she said. “I’m always trying to make an additional buck.”
When she has some actual free time, Rebecca likes to hang out and read books. “I could just fly through books,” she said. “One of my goals in life is to write young adult novels.”
Next on her list: getting out and exploring the parks in Bayside.
“I like having my parks,” she said. “I like the trees and the squirrels.”

| Alomar Ex Sues

| Queens girl Ilya Dall sues Alomar
|
Now-retired former Met second baseman Roberto Alomar was sued by ex-girlfriend and Queens native Ilya Dall for continuing to have unprotected sex with her despite allegedly being infected with H.I.V.
Dall is claiming $15 million in damages against the 12-time All-Star. Alomar’s attorney denied the basis of the suit, according to the New York Times.
The couple lived together in Alomar’s lavish Whitestone home until they split last fall. They began dating in 2002, when Alomar’s career took a noticeable nose-dive with the Amazins.

Paul Simon a Beacon of Talent
Legendary singer-songwriter Paul Simon was the first performer to break the sound of silence when the Upper West Side’s Beacon Theatre reopened Thursday after a seven-month long renovation project.
With steep ticket prices of up to $265 a pop, folks got their money’s worth – particularly when old friend Art Garfunkel joined him on stage. The Kew Gardens Hills-raised star played songs from his solo career and he and Garfunkel resurrected some of his most famous Simon & Garfunkel tunes.
Over the years, the landmark Beacon Theatre has hosted a bevy of celebrated acts such as the Rolling Stones, Queen and Radiohead. The theatre’s long-awaited $15 million restoration project helped restore the venue to its original 1928 Art Deco splendor by installing its original seats, replacing the stage flooring and improving the acoustics of the space.
Can’t think of a more ideal Queens legend to help revive a paramount New York theatre.

Flushing Away Deficit
|
| Roosevelt Ave & 103 St.
|
You ever want to squelch that gotta go feeling, but there is a nary a bathroom in sight? Well, if you happen to be in Corona, near Roosevelt Avenue and 103rd Street, you can use the City’s second automatic public bathroom. All you need is a quarter and 15 minutes of privacy is yours.
The toilet was installed two months ago and its usage rivals that of the one in Madison Square Park in Manhattan.
According to published reports, from Dec. 13 to Dec. 31, the Queens commode was used 1,142 times. That’s $285.50 in half a month. If we put one on every corner we may not have to raise the sales tax at all.
Include some toilets in the budget Mayor Mike, and there goes our deficit.

Homey Sam
|
| Sam DiBernardo
|
This month’s City Council races, marred by legal wrangling, just got a little uglier.
Sam DiBernardo, who didn’t even come close to gathering enough signatures to make the ballot, railed and ranted about the election process on his personal blog.
“Voters you are loosing [sic] it. You are being had! You are being screwed! You are being dooped [sic],” the 73-year-old former teacher wrote in an entry titled Voters Blindsided. “You are being fooled into thinking you have a choice of which candidate to vote for when in fact if the Board of Elections and Hired Gunsell lawyers, big mouth bullies, hired by the most vicious of candidates, who are calling the shots and controlling the electoral process and controlling who you can vote for! SORRY, HOMEY DON’T PLAY THAT!!”
Sorry “D.” But don’t despair yet – try channeling that rage into next September.
Change your campaign slogan from “Sam DiBernardo: Man for Change” to “Sam DiBernardo: Homey Don’t Play That.”
At the very least, we’ll all be entertained.

When City Hall News does a story, people listen. That was the case last week when the bi-weekly, which runs a hip blog, posted its list of the 30 Most Beautiful People in New York Politics. Sure, you had the requisite Anthony Weiner and Mike Gianaris from Queens, but another borough stud close to our hearts also made the list.
Shams Tarek, the press officer for Councilman Jim Gennaro, and former reporter for the Tribune and PRESS of Southeast Queens, made the list.
Shams, who covered beats for this paper and has often contributed to QConfidential, has always been a star in our eyes, and now that he has made this exclusive list, we are rooting for him again.
C’mon girls, how can you say no to this mug?
