Queens Born & Raised

Starleigh Pole
Home: Springfield Gardens
Age: 25
Height: 5-6
Weight: 120
Stats: 34-28 37

Starleigh Pole, born and raised in Springfield Gardens, hopes one day she can abandon her full-time job as an administrative assistant and have her picture gloss the pages of magazines.

The 25-year-old just started taking modeling seriously a few years ago and has big aspirations. “This is something I’ve always wanted to do,” she said. “It’s the idea that if I’m driving with my kids, and I look on a billboard and can say that’s me.”

Her biggest gig so far was In Gear, an up-and-coming hip-hop magazine, that featured her photos, and she appeared as a pedestrian extra in “Spiderman 3.” She recently tried out for a model spot in Bloomingdale’s new line of pajamas called “Scanty” and is working on a possible project for a music album cover and a stint in a music video.

Starleigh moved from Queens when she was 13, but still comes back to visit her best friend who lives on the same street where she grew up. She still enjoys Queens restaurants and has a favorite Jamaican eatery on Astoria Boulevard. She also likes to swim and play basketball.

She uses Craig’s List to find out about open model calls, but the aspiring model knows to always be prepared for her big break.

“I always carry my [photo] book with me,” she said.

The Eyes Of The Beholder

The Donald finds Jolie unattractive

Donald Trump simply does not find actress Angelina Jolie attractive and he recently made that clear on Larry King Live.

The Queens-raised real estate mogul who obviously adores models, said he cannot understand why so many men are infatuated with Jolie and said he’s turned off because of the way she treats her actor dad John Voight, whom he’s friends with.

“She is not even that attractive,” Big Daddy told King. “I think Brad Pitt is a smart guy for narrowly dodging the marriage issue. I’m not a fan of hers as you probably noticed. I know her father. Her father is a nice guy. I think she treats him like a dog but maybe they have some kind of a thing.”

“This poor sap practically begs her, ‘I want to see my grandson. I want to see this.’ I mean if I were with him, I’d say ‘Forget it. It’s over.’”

The ever-empathetic Trump even went on about the amount of men the sultry temptress has been with.

“She’s been with so many guys she makes me look like a baby, OK, with the other side. And, I just don’t even find her attractive. That has nothing to do with why I said it though.”

Priorities

Queens Kid Lloyd Banks

Shakespeare got a dose of some hip-hop when G-Unit’s Lloyd Banks recently donated $10,000 to the August Martin High School library in Jamaica, All Hip-Hop.com says (which, by the way, claims it’s “the world’s most dangerous site”).

The megastar, who probably drops double that donation in one shopping spree at Jacob the Jeweler, showed students what a rapping sage he really is. He told Fox 5 news: “I will make sure I come back here every year, as long as they accept me, just to let them know there’s something else beyond these walls.”

So why stay in school when there’s the world of rap filled with greed, violence and uber egos? Just read his most inspirational words, which came when he told students of his extraordinary aspirations when he was a student: “I love English, I wanted to know how to read and count my money, so I love math.”

Well, at least we know he got the basics down.

Dinosaur Jr. Theft

Guitarist J. Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. the band whose trailer was stolen in Long Island City.

“There’s going to be one major heist in your career and it’s going to be a bummer, so you have to be prepared for it,” explained Dinosaur Jr. bassist Lou Barlow.

Of course, when the Massachusetts-based alternative rock band finally decided to reform with its original lineup for the first time since 1989, that’s when the major heist takes place. Their trailer gets stolen, and there goes all their gear.

But wait – it gets better, because of course it had to take place in Long Island City. So we’d like to take the time right now to thank the thieves. Thanks thieves – thanks a lot! Just when the culturally budding neighborhood figured out how to affectively build up its reputation, and divert eyes and anger from the pothole-ridden streets, you greedy thieves, who most likely don’t even know how to play an instrument, had to go and do this.

Guitarist J. Mascis had insurance on everything, but he took the biggest hit, since he lost almost every piece of gear he was comfortable with.

“But he immediately put himself to the task of getting new sh*t. He didn’t let it get in his way, even though his stuff was worth thousands of dollars,” said Barlow. “I just lost a bass.”

Star Power?

Mike Gianaris

CityHallNews.com, the new political online and print newspaper published by our former Confidential contributor and colleague Tom Allon reports on line that: “Assembly Member Michael Gianaris (D-Queens) has been a long-time supporter of the New York film industry, but only recently snagged a role in front of the cameras – on NBC’s original version of “Law & Order.”

The episode was slated to run Oct. 6 and QConf sadly missed it but Gianaris who played the love interest of actress Madchen Amick had no lines and only a momentary on-screen appearance.

Gianaris whose Astoria district includes Silvercup and Kaufman Studios wound up on-air as a result of meeting an NBC Exec at a cocktail party. The scene with just seconds of screen time took three hours to film in the dining area of City Hall restaurant.

Albom Again

Former Trib Managing Editor Mitch Albom

Former Trib reporter and managing editor Mitch Albom seems to have done it again.

Albom’s newest novel, “For One More Day,” was published Sept. 26, and if initial reviews are to be believed, it may be as successful as his first two novels, “Tuesdays With Morrie,” which led the Times best seller list for more weeks than anything in recent memory and “The
Five People You Meet In Heaven.”

Flat broke and jobless, out of boredom Albom picked up a copy of the Tribune many years back and saw an advertisement calling for writers.

Admittedly, Albom had never written a thing and was a musician at the time, but decided that a paycheck couldn’t hurt.

Having excelled as a reporter and then managing editor before moving to Detroit, Albom described the first time he ever saw his byline in the Trib.

“Seeing that article, with my byline, knocked me over the waterfall and down into the rivers of writing, the simple, earnest joy of moving what you see through your brain and onto paper. I have been here ever since,” he said.

Albom’s life’s story has been that of the typical American dream. The Trib staff is proud to claim him as one of our own and hopes many more novels are still to come.

Congrats, Mitch!
