Mysterious Egypt
|
|
Egypt Halvorsen Home: Astoria Age: 21 Height: 5’ 11" Weight: 128 lbs Stats: 34-25-3
For nearly two years, this aspiring beauty from Astoria has had her eyes set on many different prizes, but the one she has been showing most publicly is her love for fashion.
“I love fashion, clothes, keeping up with all the current styles,” this towering model said.
When she is not working her way down the runways of fashion shows, Egypt splits her time between obtaining a degree online from an upstate community college and working with the disabled.
“The college is up by my family’s second home” outside of Albany, Egypt said. She is studying communications, and hopes one day to establish a career in public relations. In the meantime, the modeling is a way of making a few bucks and having fun at the same time.
“I’ve done shows for a couple of up and coming designers,” Egypt said. She has modeled at the 30 VanDam Showroom, which was featured on the Bravo Network’s Project Runway this season.
“I’ve done a bunch of different fashion events,” which is easy because this style maven spends whatever free time she has checking out the newest trends in the most posh shops. “I do a lot of shopping, which is probably not a good thing because it gets expensive,” she said. “But I’m always picking up books on fashion and looking through fashion magazines.”
And her favorite place in Queens to have some fun? “The Queens Borough Public Library,” she said. “I just think it’s the best.”

| The original New York Dolls
|
After nearly 30 years the forefathers of glam, the New York Dolls, are touring again with only two of their original members. If you’re looking for the original line-up, you had better check out Queens’ Mount St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Johnny Thunders and drummer Jerry Nolan died in the 1990s and are both buried in the same Queens cemetery. The cyber lounge Exit, a Web site, tells visitors how and when they can visit their grave sites. The Web site explains that Johnny resides in division 9, row R, grave 78. The main name on Johnny’s grave is Nicoletti, and reads “Johnny Thunders” in the lower left corner. Jerry lies in division 24, row A, grave 89.
For those who feel this is of grave importance, check out the site at: http://home.eol.ca/~ifftay/exit/exit.htm
Vetos JackoQueens native Donald Trump is not quite sure about his partners’ idea of having Michael Jackson as resident performer at the new Trump hotel that will be opened in 2006. Phil Ruffin and Jack Wishna have been toying with the idea and have spoken with representatives of Jackson about having the singer as a long term resident. However, Trump has been quoted as saying, “It’s an interesting idea but I don’t think he’d show up half the time.” Wishna said a Jackson show could draw more than $80 million to the resort. How many children?

New Threads
|
| Helen Sears & Mike Bloomberg enwrapped in Jackson Heights
|
The billionaire Mayor has gotten some new threads. Helen Sears, a local Italian girl, has long donned shawls and other sari-looking outfits when in public. Now, Mike Bloomberg has one too. That’s because the Jewish, Massachusetts-born Mayor was recently given a traditional Southeast Asian sari by business leaders within Sears' district.
Imagine what Mayor Mike may dress up in as he travels the diverse streets of the world’s most culturally place – Queens.

Circus Moves On
For the past two weeks there was a barn set up behind Madison Square Garden and a mile-long train in Long Island City, sure signs that the Ringling Brothers & Barnum and Bailey Circus had come to town.
But soon after the last show on Sunday night, the circus performers packed their bags and took the 7 train to the Hunters Point Station, where they made their way to the train that serves as their home.
Things were not quite so simple for the animals, however. The llamas, goats, tigers and dogs were transported to the train by truck, but the elephants and horses had to make their way by foot back the way they came, on the long, lonely walk through the Midtown Tunnel, closed especially for the occasion.
At least in Pennsylvania, the circus’ next stop, there will be enough space for the animals to stay outside.

A Wing And A Prayer
One knows politics. The other knows chicken. But both have a legion of followers and need a secret recipe. (Left) The late Colonel Sanders’ secret recipe of seven herbs and spices has ingratiated this southerner into the hearts (and stomachs) of millions. The other (right) is Tom Ognibene, the former Middle Village Councilman who is looking for a secret recipe as he tries to unseat Mayor Mike Bloomberg.

Blind Justice
|
| Ron Eldard
|
Queens born Ron Eldard is getting praise from television critics and advocates for the visually impaired thanks to his performance as blind cop Jim Dunbar in the ABC cop drama “Blind Justice.”
The actor, who was raised in Queens and graduated the High School for Performing Arts 20 years ago, has had a career of ups and downs, including playing boyfriend to real-life girlfriend Julianna Margulies of “ER.”
But he has reached a new level in his career playing a police officer who is blinded in the line of duty and returns to fight crime without the benefit of eyesight – a solid lead role on a network drama.
The show, a mid-season replacement, has been placing well in Nielsen ratings.

Dies Again
Sunnyside-raised James Caan has found a new role for the 1972 Academy Award winning The Godfather.
Sonny Corleone’s voice and character have been implemented into the soon to be released Electronic Arts video game, which follows the script of the first Godfather film and allows players to generate their own characters and move up the ranks in the Corleone family.
It is unsure if a gamer can prevent Sonny’s murder on the causeway, but the non-linear action/adventure saga can change courses at any time, depending on the path one chooses to take. The Godfather will be available on Play Station 2, XBox and PCs. The game has been rated M for mature audiences.
