Model of Queens Hair Maiden
|
|
Marisa Devonish Home: Cambria Heights Age: 26 Height: 5’6" Weight: 115lbs. Stats: 34-24-34 Agent: Derrick Jones/ Black Cartel
Outstanding hair can take you pretty far, as 26-year-old model/actress Marisa Devonish has learned. Of course, it helps if you have a gorgeous face and jaw-dropping body as well – and Marisa does.
A Cambria Heights native, Marisa dreamed of modeling since age 10. “I used to watch all the shows and read fashion magazines,” she said.
Her breakthrough moment came when an editor at Modern Hairstyles Magazine noticed her raven hair and invited her into a salon for a new hairdo. That salon session, and the photographs that followed, made Marisa a beauty shop icon of sorts.
Now, wherever she goes, complete strangers say that they’ve seen her before. “People have told me they have seen my face up in salons,” she explained.
Marisa has left hair modeling behind, however, since she landed a recurring role in the new season of the “Dave Chappelle Show” on Comedy Central. Look for her in the upcoming Rick James-inspired sketch. “I play a main role in a club,” Marisa said. “At one point I flash him, but you don’t see anything.”
Perhaps the most surprising aspect of this Queens-born bombshell's life, however, is her day job – an eighth grade special education teacher. “People call me Clark Kent,” she said. “By day, I wear the glasses and I’m a teacher, but then by night I do modeling.”
Sometimes, though, her two worlds can converge and create some awkward situations. “One of the boys saw me in a hair magazine and cut my face out and put it up in his room,” Marisa said with an uncomfortable giggle.

| Married With Children
Why is City Council Speaker Gifford Miller so supportive of gay marriages? Is it because his alter ego is known nationwide as America’s most famous – and flamboyant – gay television character, Will Truman of “Will & Grace”? Although Miller has a striking resemblance to Will, played by actor Eric McCormack, both are married with children.

A Confident Speaker
When QConf recently printed a “Split Personality” column comparing the face of Queens Councilwoman Melinda Katz to Madonna’s, one of the two was offended.
Nope it wasn't Madonna. It was Melinda. And for good reason. “Madonna’s 10 years older than I am,” argued the young, vibrant attractive Councilwoman.
What a great sense of humor good old Melinda has. That could really come in handy if she ever decides to try for another office or position. Not that she’s thinking about anything like that.
Right Madaam Speaker?

| Congressman Greg Meeks and John Kerry. photo by Ira Cohen

Queens Congressman Gregory Meeks is a schucker and a jiver. At least, that’s what the DJs on one popular New York City radio station think. After embracing Senator John Kerry at York College, Meeks found himself calling New York City’s hip-hop radio station Hot 97’s morning show one day to speak for Kerry as one of his representatives. Let’s just say the morning show hosts, Sway and Miss Info, were not happy with the call. Apparently, Kerry agreed to call the morning show and discuss issues that affect the black and Latino communities, but when the call was passed through to the show, the hosts were surprised to hear Meeks on the other end of the line. The hosts said that Meeks “shucked and jived,” all of their questions by sugarcoating his answers. After hanging up on the congressman, the hosts said they did not know if they would be voting for Kerry in the New York Primary or in the November elections. Well, Kerry ended up winning the primary. Only time will tell what happens in November. But one thing’s probably for certain – Meeks won’t be calling any radio shows on Kerry’s behalf.

A F*x#!@?* Queens Cameo

| Fred Durst, Ron Jeremy and Reginold are at: www.zipperfish.com/free/yafm8.html.

You never know where the borough’s most famous porn star is going to end up. Former Bayside resident and Cardozo High School grad Ron Jeremy has been in hundreds of sexy, steamy movies, has done a documentary on himself, and has appeared in a reality television series. Now, good old Ron has made a cameo appearance on the popular Internet cartoon “You Are A F—ing Moron.” The comical cartoon, which involves a purple dragon with a British accent named Reginold poking fun mercilessly at celebs such as Jessica Simpson and Michael Jackson, recently had an installment making fun of pop princess Britney Spears and her super short marriage. As the at-times vulgar cartoon moves forward, funny photos of Britney making stupid faces or bearing quite a bit of her flesh flash behind Reginold to emphasize the points he’s making about her intelligence and talent. At one point, out of nowhere, a photo of the lead singer of the band Limp Bizkit Fred Durst appears. It was rumored at one time that Brit and Fred were an item, so Reginold was using his image to prove that Britney, well, gets around. Who’s next to Fred in the photo? The one and only Ron Jeremy. But he’s not mentioned at all. He has nothing to do with Reginold’s rantings or with Britney. He just happens to be in the photo, and there’s nothing identifying him. But he’s there – one of our very own Queens stars! And isn’t the borough proud of how far his career has gone?

Bayside Hits The Big Time

| Bayside on the cover of Long Island Entertainment.
|
About two years ago, QConf reported on a band named Bayside – a band that named itself after the Queens neighborhood because it “sounded cool,” not because any of them had ever lived there. At the time, the band had just cut its first record on an independent label.
Two years later, they may be headed for the stars.
The quartet was just signed to major-indie label Victory Records, the same label that signed famed Island rockers Taking Back Sunday and The Reunion Show.
The members – vocalist/guitarist Anthony Raneri, bassist Andrew Elderbaum, lead guitarist Jack O’Shea and drummer Jim Mitchell – made the front cover of the February 2004 edition of the monthly music publication Long Island Entertainment. The cover said, “Bayside Does The Island Proud.”
Well, they make Queens proud, too.
And they may be on the cover of Island papers now, but we all know where they got covered first!
