Modeling Mom
|
|
Going on a whim for a couple head shots as an ambitious 18-year-old, Krissy entered the modeling industry with the mindset that only tall and skinny women could be models, but she wasn’t discouraged.
At five-foot two-inches tall, Krissy didn’t fit the stereotypical model stature, but she found that modeling is for any type of look.
“It gave me more confidence,” she said. “With out a doubt it taught me just to be who you are.”
From her first gig on, photographers referred her and she continued to have fun, landing photo shoots at Bride magazine with her husband, Marie Claire and also a feature in a 2004 sexiest models calendar.
Modeling has provided Krissy with opportunities to travel to places like Boston, Florida and Pennsylvania, but she continues to model just for fun.
“When I am not modeling I am a full-time mom,” the former Queens girl said. “I was a teacher before my daughter came along.”
In addition to modeling, Krissy enjoys dance and ballet. Upcoming gigs include beach shoots, but caring for her young daughter is priority.

| 50 Cent Garden
|
| 50cent, Bette Midler, Mayor Mike
|
What do Bette Midler, Mike Bloomberg and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson have in common?
Apparently a park in the rapper’s old back yard.
The unlikely trio is restoring a section of Baisley Park in Jamaica, where they’ll add a children’s learning garden.
The Mayor and both musicians will attend a dedication ceremony in October naming the Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson Community Garden in the rapper’s honor in what may be the most bizarre joint-public appearance this year.
Fitty’s G-Unity Foundation contributed more than $300,000 to the restoration project. The foundation worked on creating the new green space with the City, Midler’s New York Restoration Project and renowned landscape architect Walter Hood.

Sisters Swing
|
| (l to r) Serena Williams, Venus Williams
|
It was a family affair again in Queens at the U.S. Open.
Though the match between the Williams sisters came too soon for many tennis enthusiasts, Serena and Venus treated fans to an exciting quarterfinals match in front of 20,000 hushed fans.
The victory nudged Serena into a 9-8 edge in their career pro matchups, and she’s now ahead 6-5 in Grand Slam meetings and 8-7 in major titles – they’re both two-time U.S. Open champs.
The match came two rounds before the final, but to many in attendance, including victorious Serena, it felt like a final because of the added emotion and passion involved. She told the Associated Press, “I feel like I should have a trophy now. Unfortunately I don’t, and I got to go to the next round.”

Nas’ Metamorphosis
|
| Queensbridge's Nas
|
He has done a track backwards and written from the perspective of a gun – now Queensbridge bred rap legend Nas has written a song from the perspective of a roach.
Nearing the 15th anniversary of his critically acclaimed debut album, “Illmatic,” Nas has managed to stay relevant for longer than most rappers.
He can credit fresh ideas and grinding in the studio for his success. The self-appointed Godson also seems to always have new caveats to his songs including his roach rap on the newest album.
In a recent interview Nas explained his reasons for the unorthodox rap.
“Man, I was just sitting back faded, thinking…I got to thinking about how we evolved,” the Queens-born rapper said. “I was looking at a bunch of ants and I said, yo we got a lot in common, everything that eats and breathes and builds and creates it’s like there is a connection even to the smallest thing.”
He went on making an analogy that he feels his community has been treated the way insects are, as pests in the larger world.
“We wasn’t looked at as beauty out there, we was looked at as a worst pest,” he said. “Because of that treatment some of us started to believe we were a pest.”

Shea’s Guitar Tribute
|
| Marnie Stern
|
Always representing female guitar shredders, Marnie Stern just posted a new song on her MySpace page from her upcoming album titled “Shea Stadium.”
Although the lyrics are difficult to decipher through the distorted arpeggios and hammered strings, it seems Stern, who lives in New York, wanted to say goodbye to the Queens icon by burning it down with guitar fire.
Stern will release her loquaciously titled album “This Is It and I Am It and You Are It and So Is That and He Is It and She Is It and It Is It and That Is That” on Oct. 6.
You can hear the song at www.myspace.com/marniestern1.

Trump The Scottish Neighbor
|
| Donald Trump
|
Queens raised billionaire developer Donald Trump appeared this week on the HBO series Real Sports in connection with his plan to build what he calls the world’s finest golf course and resort. “The Donald,” of the massive ego and gravity defying hair-do is getting a lot of support from the locals. An unofficial poll in a pub outside Edinboro evidenced the good feelings, now only if he and his soon to be neighbor could play as nice.
In a conversation with a reporter from the show, Trump called his neighbor, a Scottish farmer and family man, a “scoundrel” and referred to his traditional lifestyle as “squalid and trashy.”
The man was approached by Trump about selling his family’s land and refused. Trump wants the land because it borders his mega resort golf course development.
So much for being a good neighbor Don, when in Rome, maybe?
He couldn’t have learned this way of behaving from growing up in Jamaica Estates? No of course not; must we credit his enabling rich-guy father for setting his son on this torched earth path?
