Model Of Queens: Weatherman
|
|
Alessandro Legotino Home: Ozone Park Age: 21 Height: 5’10" Weight: 145 Waist: 31"
Alessandro Legotino, a Queensite from Ozone Park, just began modeling a month ago, though he’s already gotten off to a strong start.
“I’m pretty new at it,” he said. “It’s something very recent.”
Modeling is only a hobby for the busy 21-year-old, however. Legotino attends college at Adelphi University in Garden City, and is studying meteorology. He also works part-time at Armani Exchange in Soho, Manhattan.
Working at Armani Exchange, a trendy clothing store in the heart of Manhattan’s downtown shopping district, inspired Legotino to try out modeling. Many of the other store employees, he said, are also models. “I figured what the hell, I’m young, let me just start modeling,” he said.
Though Legotino has only worked on photos for his portfolio and has yet to book a gig, he has high expectations for his modeling career and hopes it will prove to be a full-time endeavor.
“I actually looked at these pictures and thought wow this is pretty cool,” he said. “After you do this once or twice you actually start to like it.”
When he’s not modeling, Legotino likes to hit the town – though often not in Queens. “I go into the city or into Long Island to hang out,” he said. “A majority of my friends are out there.”
Some of his friends are also models, which, along with experiences at fashion shows in Milan and the Armani Exchange store, peaked his interest in entering the business. “After all these experiences and everything and talking to these professional models it just kind of caught my eye,” he said.

| The Darjeeling Limited
|
| Queens kid Adrien Brody (r.) plays brothers to Owen (l.) and Luke Wilson.
|
Wes Anderson’s “The Darjeeling Limited” will open the New York Film Festival later this month. It’s a film about three estranged brothers who journey to India in order to bond.
The cast of this, Anderson’s fifth film, features all the regulars: Bill Murray, Angelica Huston, Jason Schwartzman and Owen Wilson. But tossed in among the staples of Anderson’s entourage is Woodhaven’s own Adrien Brody.
Hardly a stranger to the silver screen, he has won an Oscar after all and appeared in more than 35 films, Brody is new to Anderson’s securely established cast of reoccurring actors. He trained at LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, both in Manhattan. But his college degree comes from good ol’ Queens College.

Jamaica's Domino Champs

| Jamaicans win Domino Championship in Jamaica, Queens
|
A duo from the country of Jamaica domino-ed the competition over Labor Day weekend becoming the winners of the Second Annual Chivas Regal World Domino Championship at the Ramada Plaza Hotel at JFK International Airport.
According to the Jamaica Observer, which serves the Caribbean island, Ramsey and Rohan Lynch placed first after winning 3-1 in a best of five series against Floridians Vincent Elliott and Paul Lowe. The pair competed against a pool of more than 100 competitors for cash and prizes.
And they only had to come to our Jamaica to do it.

Shark Scare
Queens is accused of being third in the pecking order when it comes to the boroughs, but even sharks know a good thing when the see it.
On Saturday of Labor Day weekend, a thresher shark made an appearance on the sandy shore of Rockaway Beach, giving many beachgoers their first non-Jaws glimpse of a real live shark. The fish swam up all the way to the beach and had to be helped back into its natural habitat.
On Sunday, another shark, which bore a striking resemblance to Saturday's visitor, washed ashore dead. It was unclear whether the two sharks are one and the same. However, since it is now past Labor Day, the point is moot and the shark can swim wherever it pleases. The people, however, can’t.

Hide The Salami
|
| Ben’s Best with no salami in the window
|
Tradition be damned.
Ben’s Best delicatessen on Queens Boulevard in Rego Park was shut down for three days recently for failing a health
The popular delicatessen failed an Aug. 23 health inspection but this was no regular failure.
“Our biggest problem was the hanging salami in the window, which we had hanging there for 60 years,” deli owner Jay Parker told a city daily paper.
“Now the Board of Health says that it has to be confined to the temperatures of other meat products even though it is salted and smoked.”
The salami is no longer visible through the window, but the food is still as good

Queens Troops Invade Canadian Fest
|
| Jason Patric, Susan Sarandon
|
Queens natives Jason Patric and Susan Sarandon are invading Canada.
Well, technically, they’re not exactly invading.
Their film, “In The Valley of Elah,” is being screened at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival, running Sept. 6 to Sept. 15 courtesy of our neighbors to the north.
“In The Valley of Elah” is a much-anticipated drama helmed by Paul Haggis (“Crash”) also starring Tommy Lee Jones and Charlize Theron. It is one of 349 films that will be screened during the 10-day celluloid celebration.
Good luck to our Queens countymen!
