Model Mother

Kenya Callender of Hollis has been modeling on and off for more than 15-years. And although she loves the runway, it will always run second place to her daughter.

The single-mom gave up a fulltime career in modeling to support her daughter –and she doesn’t regret it one bit.

“I have a child getting ready to go to college,” Kenya said recalling the offer. “I can’t quit my job to support my career. My daughter is more important. I would like to, but reality kicks in. I have a child I have to take care of, and her career is more important than me being a fulltime model.”

Kenya said she’s kept modeling on the side and picked up fashion photography – and that’s enough for her.

The model said that fashion is a family-affair in her home. Her daughter is now studying apparel design at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Even her mother occasionally gets in on the act.

She recalled modeling during a lingerie show in Queens, where mom paid a surprise visit on the runway.

“When I was walking back my mother was on the runway taking pictures,” Kenya said laughing. “I’ll never forget that, I couldn’t believe she did that.”

Born and raised in Queens, the humble-model mom said she spends most of her time around the neighborhood, working as a representative at the Queens Library in Hollis and reading when she isn’t shooting or modeling.

“I’m just not wanting to really hang out anymore,” she admitted.

She said she’s more concerned with developing her passions into a viable career.

“I’m trying to go back to school in January to get my degree in business management,” she said. “Then I can open up my own photography studio and so I can teach models as well, how to be better models.”

Astoria Band an FM Hit

Astoria's The Spring Standards

It’s been awhile since FM radio made any waves. Sure, people rejoiced when beloved oldies station WCBS-FM resumed its magic after the company’s failed attempt to replace it with generic rock – but that was bound to happen, right?

Thankfully, the latest FM sensation, WRXP (101.9), doesn’t just focus on the hits – it makes hits out of local bands such as Astoria-based The Spring Standards.

The harmonious triumvirate, made up of two guys named James and a cute, cute Heather, appeared on Matt Pinfield’s morning show to play a few tracks from their new EP, “No One Will Know.” Their sound can be described as a slowed-down, “countrified” fusion of the Kinks and Belle & Sebastian with a dash of Magnetic Fields eccentricity and Beach Boys compatibility.

They’re set to play a slew of shows up and down the East Coast this winter, including one at Manhattan’s Joe Pub on Jan. 2. Judge for yourself at myspace.com/thespringstandards.

Bennett's Art In Smithsonian

National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution; gift of Tony Bennett.

Astoria’s legendary crooner Tony Bennett has had his third painting accepted into the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery. The watercolor portrait of jazz legend Duke Ellington, titled “God Is Love,” marks Bennett’s third work being accepted by the institution.

“Anthony Benedetto – Tony Bennett – the son of Italian immigrants, portraying his mentor Duke Ellington, the grandson of a slave,” the portrait gallery’s director Martin Sullivan told Marketwatch. “There was great affection between these two outstanding contributors to America’s musical heritage.”

“It is an enormous honor to now have three of my paintings in collections at the Smithsonian and it is something that I would never have imagined when I started out as a young child drawing with chalk on the sidewalks of my hometown in Astoria, Queens,” Bennett said.

Queens Man Makes The Cut

A Queens Man is suing the ECPRD

In courtrooms across the country there are lawsuits for slip and falls, defamation of character and a host of other amusing tidbits.

But imagine being John Singer, a Queens man, who has brought a claim against the Central Europe Center For Research and Documentation, an academic group that specializes in Jewish history and culture. He alleged that the company wrongly printed that he was uncircumcised in an article.

According to published reports, Singer’s mother was quoted as saying that neither of her sons were circumcised. However, she said that she didn’t make the statement.

Singer allegedly notified the company that the statement was untrue before the article, “Jewish Witness to a European Century” was printed.

In spite of the warning, the statement was posted on the organization’s Web site. Singer, 49, is suing for unspecified damages.

Wonder how the evidence will be presented?

Tongue Lashing

Shoe tossing has become the global symbol for disdain and Stephen Millies, a Queens man, tried to keep the trend alive.

At the MTA’s board meeting, Millies, 54, was angered by the board passing its budget, which would burden New Yorkers with fare and toll hikes. After launching a verbal assault on MTA Executive Director Elliot Sander, Millies attempted to throw his shoe in protest.

According to published reports, Millies said, “Elliot Sander, you made $300,000 last year. This shoe’s for you.”

Before he could fling his shoe in protest he was carted out of the meeting room. He was charged with disorderly conduct and issued a summons.
