Meet Astoria's Amber Star
|
|
Amber Star
Home: Astoria
Age: 27
Height: 5’ 7"
Weight: 105
Stats: 32-24-33
Five years before Amber Star got to New York, she got her first taste of modeling in her native Oklahoma City. After moving to New York five years ago and doing some work for wickedtalent.com she decided to try to diversify her portfolio.
Her move to New York was pretty spontaneous. She came here once to visit some friends, liked it, and moved across the country.
“I had visited a lot of cities, but this was the one,” she said.
Amber spends her non-modeling time making use of her looks as a go-go dancer at Lit in Manhattan, 813 in Brooklyn and private parties with her dancing partner named Tsunami; together they are the go-go kittens.
Clear to point out the go-go dancing and stripping are entirely different, Amber said that she and the people who hire her have a great time, though it is not always enough to cover the bills.
Amber has a couple of agencies interested in working with her, but said she prefers to manage her career.
As for Queens, this Oklahoma girl is in love with the fact that she’s a stone’s throw from Manhattan, but has the open space and quiet of Astoria.
“I like to get away from hustle and bustle,” she said.
As far as hanging out, “I love the city, but there’s a place called Rapture, a little bar up the street, that’s one of my favorites.”

| 50 Years Later
From the deep, dark files of the “Whatever Happened To” drawer here at QConf we uncovered the story of Joseph “Doc” Massimo, a quiet legend in gymnastics, who hails from Bayside.
According to the Daily News Tribune of Waltham, Mass., “Massimo, a father of two grown children, cringes at memories of his youth, running wild on the streets of Bayside. While he freely admits that his antics as a ‘street kid’ were undoubtedly frustrating for his parents.”
“Massimo was left an only child at the age of 7 when his two older brothers were killed in a tragic accident. He sighs and shakes his head when he remembers that their deaths didn’t slow him down.”
In 1950 he went to SUNY Cortland because of its gymnastics program. After a stint in the Army, a Master’s in psychology and work in the daytime for a school district and in the evening taught at a gym he founded.
By 1968 he was appointed to the Olympic gymnastics team as a trainer, and has worked with teenagers ever since – both on their mental and physical growth. He was instrumental as a coach in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, where U.S. gymnasts won the gold.
It's just another Queens story.

Keys To Hollywood
|
|
Laurelton native Alicia Keys just finished filming her Hollywood movie debut “Smoking Aces,” where she played the role of a contract killer named Georgia Sykes.
Keys appeared alongside Ben Affleck, Ray Liotta, Andy Garcia, Jeremy Piven, and Ryan Reynolds.
Director Joe Carnahan asked Keys to play the role of an assassin and she told Moviehole.com that she was excited to come out of her shell and take on a role where she got to wear short shorts, boots and fishnet stockings.
“He said ‘Alicia, we don’t want you to play one of those soft, female roles where you are a love interest. Georgia will be amazing, she’s powerful; she’s a badass.’ I read the script and really understood what the role of Georgia would be and was onboard. It’s exciting for me to enter another world where you are completely not yourself and you can dive 100 percent into it and be totally liberated by it. My role in ‘Smokin’ Aces’ is not what people would expect, and I always want to do that.”
Keys first appeared in a 1985 episode of “The Cosby Show” titled “Slumber Party” that aired during the show’s first season. She appeared under the name Alicia Cook.

Relief At Last
|
| Twenty of these public pay toilets will soon be installed in our City.
|
Queens residents thought their burdens were lifted when the City unveiled new bus shelters last week at Queens Borough Hall just in time for winter, but Queensites may soon have another reason to feel relieved—literally.
Cemusa, the same street furniture company commissioned for the improved bus shelters, has plans for public porcelain with the installation of 20 toilets around the City. Chronic over-hydrators will pay a small fee to pee, probably not more than a buck (imagine trying to look for exact change when Nature is urgently calling). The pay-for-potties are scheduled to be open for business in June, which sparked the Mayor to quip: “Don’t drink a lot of coffee before then.”
Officials will meet after the holidays to decide their exact locations, and we think one Queens neighborhood is an obvious choice for the unveiling of a new public pit stop.
Flushing, our choice, as we've pointed out previously, is the only community which has a Council-member whose both names mean, well . . .the same thing: John Liu.

The Cat's Meow!
So the folks from the Wildlife Conservation Society who run the Queens and the City's other Zoos apparently have a sense of humor. The picture above arrived with a Press Release which read, "Felix, a four year old puma at the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Queens Zoo, is “tickled” by Elmo! Zookeepers noticed that the 160 pound male mountain lion seemed to be fascinated by Fisher-Price’s Elmo doll when a child brought him to the Zoo one day. The Elmo craze isn’t just for kids… apparently, this popular toy has animal appeal."
