Many Irons In The Fire

Mimo
Home: Flushing
Age: 18
Height: 5’ 4"
Weight: 114
Stats: 34-25-37
For this Asian beauty who has been modeling for just over a year, the opportunity to be in front of the camera is the fulfillment of a lifelong dream.
“There is an artistic side to it that gives me the same fulfillment I get from drawing or being a photographer,” Mimo said. “Instead of using pen and paper or a camera to express herself, she uses her body.
“I started modeling as a way of making a childhood dream come true,” she said. “When I was younger I would look at magazines and dream, and by the time I turned 18 I had photographers looking at me, trying to get me to work for them.”
But Mimo is no fool, and she did her research before actually agreeing to let anybody take her picture.
“People get scammed,” she said. “I didn’t want to have to deal with that.”
When not in front of the camera, Mimo divides her time in several areas. She is a photographer, a real estate agent and a sophomore at St. John’s University. Though she hasn’t settled yet on a major, Mimo is confident that she will make the right choice when the time comes. “I’m a jack of all trades,” she said, noting that her life can take her in a number of directions.
One place it will head soon is motherhood. She and her husband, who is in the Army, currently stationed in Kentucky but scheduled for departure to Iraq in August, want to have children soon.
This multi-faceted model has a word of advice for those seeking to get into the industry. “A lot of models have this stereotype label on them, that all they are good for is sex or to stand in front of a camera,” Mimo said. “Just because you are a model does not mean you have to fall into that mindset.”

| A New King?
|
| Bob Costas
|
What TV show would use Bob Costas,53, to draw a younger audience? Well, some in the media are suggesting that CNN could be doing just that for “Larry King Live,” which has given Costas the nod to fill-in for the 71-year-old host when he’s out of the office.
Both Costas and NBC claim they are not trading their starter but merely CNN is calling to the bullpen for a little relief. But published reports indicate the show’s audience has shrunk by about 6 percent, leading some to believe the station could be looking to update the rotation.
Costas, a Queens native, will assume the role for a year, doing about 20 episodes. His first gig will likely take place in a few weeks.
In an age where celebrity trumps substance, King should just hope they don’t give the position to the interviewer with the better hair.

Say Cheese
A picture is worth a thousand words.
Only a few of those are needed to explain why there are more pictures of Mayor Bloomberg inside Councilman Vallone’s latest flier to constituents, than of City Council Speaker Gifford Miller (who Vallone endorsed for Mayor).
A source inside Vallone’s office jokingly said it was hard finding a good-looking picture of the Speaker.
We were then reminded that the mailings are non-political and that both Bloomberg and Miller have worked to improve life for Queens residents.
Ahhh, politics!
Sharing The Ride
Queens Village native James Solorzano has been on the stand at U.S. Federal Court in Brooklyn ratting on the man he claims as his employer, Bronx native Norberto Martinez. Martinez is accused of being the ringleader of a large-scale heroin trafficking organization responsible for tons of the illegal drug being transferred from Colombia into the United States in suit jackets coming through JFK Airport.
According to a published report, as the two left the courthouse last Friday by way of prison bus, Martinez spotted Solorzano sitting just rows in front of him on the same bus. Threats were not made, but pleas not to testify were.
Sure there are shackles and handcuffs to prevent the men from actually going at each other’s throats, but putting two alleged heroin traffickers aboard the same bus as they blame each other for running an illegal multi-million dollar organization was a mistake that the U.S Attorney General blamed on staff cuts. The judge warned that something like this should never happen again.

| Russell Simmons
|
Queens-born music producer Russell Simmons is set to try his luck in a different kind of communication—the wireless kind.
Def Jam Enterprises, a subsidiary of Simmons’ company Rush Communications, last week launched a new website where customers can purchase music, games, photos, ring-tones and other digital diversions for use on cell phones and other mobile electronic devices. The hook? Everything for sale has a hip-hop edge.
“The hip-hop lifestyle has proven to be a global financial powerhouse,” Simmons told AllHipHop.com. “The launch of the Def Jam Mobile represents more than music. It represents the entire hip-hop lifestyle including games, film, television, video, comedy, sports, fashion and news.”
Def Jam Mobile services are also available on 10 wireless carriers in the US. Those who connect to the channel can receive daily hip-hop news, daily affirmations by Rev. Run Simmons (founding member of Run-DMC and Russell’s brother), and secrets of hip-hop success from Russell himself.
See the website at DefJamMobile.com.

Boogie On, Mama!
There’s a ballroom blitz taking place at PS 144. While most 10- and 11-year-olds have chunks of bubble gum stuck to the bottom of their shoes, these little guys and gals are freely moving around the floor to an older, more refined type of music.
They are dancing up a ballroom storm, thanks to the Center for Arts Education, whose mission is to bring art to the schools. The CEA formed the intriguing marriage between PS 144 in Forest Hills and the American Ballroom Theater. The ABT taught these kids how to boogie and they showed their talents at the Center’s recent major gala benefit, helping raise $400,000, which will go towards the CEA’s programs.
Morning television came calling as the kids were asked to perform on “Live with Regis and Kelly.” These kiddies even made their way onto film, being featured in the documentary film, “Mad Hot Ballroom,” which was showcased at the Tribeca Film Festival.

Rockstar INXS
As reality shows continue to flood the airwaves, average people are regularly turned into stars or just as quickly forgotten.
In the upcoming CBS reality series titled “Rockstar INXS,” 15 performers will take part in a worldwide competition to find a new lead singer for the Australian rock group, INXS.
Of those participating, Queens’ own 29-year-old musician/administrative assistant Neal Carlson will be one of those vying for a worldwide concert tour with the band and being featured on INXS’ upcoming album.
The show premieres July 11 at 9 p.m. and will be hosted by Playboy beauty Brooke Burke and rock guitarist Dave Navarro. Viewers will have the chance to vote for who they feel is the best performer.
