Lovely Lidia
|
|
Finishing her degree in finance was the main focus for Lidia, until six months ago when her friend who is a hair stylist and make-up artist told her she should model.
“I had a photo shoot and sent pictures to agencies,” she said. “I am doing this for fun because I am actually at school at NYU.”
Lidia chose Astoria when she immigrated from Russia three years ago because of the European feel of the neighborhood and its proximity to Manhattan.
She likes the attention she receives and the connections modeling brings, but hasn’t made any future plans yet. Lidia is currently attending casting calls for shows on ABC and MTV and hopes to hear back for an audition.
“I want to see how it goes,” she said.
One thing Lidia didn’t know before attending photo shoots were how long they could be. It takes many hours for only a few good pictures in return.
“My last photo shoot was seven hours and I only got five good pictures. It takes a lot of time,” she said.
When she isn’t attending photo shoots or casting calls, Lidia enjoys going to restaurants in Queens with friends and family, reading psychology books, playing tennis, visiting museums and partying.
Lidia also finds the time between classes and modeling to help out the less fortunate. She sponsors two children in Guatemala and Honduras through Children International.
“I do so many things,” she said.

| A City Condom
|
It has taken awhile for some to accept the fact that New York City handing out free condoms -- especially in high schools -- is the correct thing to do. While many recognize the health necessity to prevent sexually transmitted disease, others are concerned with the implicit message. Well, some admirer of this page has provided us with a sample of a free NYC condom and we share it here with you.
The NYC Subway imagery conjures many messages, however, we'll leave any underground thoughts to you.

Graffers Cuffed
Two infamous graffiti vandals were caught returning from a trip to Europe where the Queens couple tagged an estimated 10 countries.
Danielle Bremner, 26, of Woodside, was picked up at JFK and her boyfriend Clay Harper, 23, was arrested in Chicago. The dynamic duo is suspected of causing more than $100,000 in damages at transit facilities around New York, according to published reports.
“We consider her the number one active female tagger, possibly in the country, definitely in New York,” a source told Newsday. “He’s a big player. He just hasn’t been caught. Now he has, and his status in the graffiti world will definitely go up.”
Councilman Peter Vallone Jr. breathed a sigh of relief: “These two are not a couple of teenagers causing a little mischief. These are career criminals who have destroyed property all over the city, and possibly all over the world,” he said. “They are real criminals, and they deserve real jail time.”

Mafia Mom Farewell
Things just keep getting tougher for the Gottis.
Philomena Gotti, mother to the late Dapper Don of the country’s best-known organized crime family, died of natural causes Aug. 26 in her Valley Stream home. She was 96.
Mama Gotti had 16 children, including Gambino crime boss and long time Queensite John Gotti.
Known as Fannie, the news came just before her grandson John “Junior” Gotti was arraigned in federal district court in Florida on racketeering charges.
Mama Gotti’s husband died in June 1992, around the time their son John was sentenced to life in prison.

Job For Queens Tough-Guy
|
| Tough-guy Christopher Young
|
A Queens investment broker and self-proclaimed “bada-bing” is hoping his homegrown New York tenacity will earn him some bling on NBC’s newest reality show, America’s Toughest Jobs.
“I’m the bada-bing of what I do,” the 49-year-old Queens native, Christopher Young, said in his bio on the show’s web site. “I think I got the upper hand because fear, I’m not afraid. I’m gonna go in there and smoke these guys.”
The show pits 13 contestants in a no-holds-barred competition in some of the toughest jobs around, everything from logging in Oregon, drilling in Texas and crab fishing in Alaska. Contestants are evaluated each episode by their coworkers and bosses at each job, with the weakest being eliminated.
Young survived the first week’s challenge, a stint aboard a crab fishing boat in the Bering Sea.
The winner will be awarded the cumulative annual salary of each of the jobs.
America’s Toughest Jobs airs Mondays at 9 p.m.

Capping Gang Caps
|
|
Is Major League Baseball, in partnership with Buffalo-based cap maker New Era selling and marketing hats that are designed to attract gang members?
Councilman Leroy Comrie thinks so, and he wants it to stop.
The ever garrulous councilman had some choice words for what he sees as large companies marketing gang culture.
“It is apparently clear that street gangs in our urban cities have adopted sports caps as a way of identifying their affiliation. For a business to use gang culture as a profit opportunity is reprehensible.”
New Era is selling officially licensed MLB merchandise with bandana patterns embedded in the caps, a sly signal to gang members. Last summer news reports revealed that the New Era Cap Company was marketing and selling MLBl-licensed New York Yankee baseball caps that were imprinted with bandanas obviously meant to appeal to urban youth consumers. The color of the bandanas were red, blue and brown – colors that are normally associated with the notorious Bloods, Crips and Latin Kings gangs.
While New Era had claimed to be unaware of any gang associations, research revealed that the company encountered a similar incident in Cleveland, Ohio earlier this year. Again, when confronted by community outrage, the company curiously claimed ignorance and promised they would remove the caps.
