Jackie’s modeling career began about 10 years ago – and ended soon afterward.

“I went to Barbizon, did a few promo jobs, and then I stopped,” Jackie said while taking a break from her full-time job.

“I stopped for about 10 years – had given up, and then recently Nick (NYPhotoByNick) contacted me and I started shooting with him,” Jackie said. “I posted my pictures on some Web sites and kind of picked up modeling again.”

During her hiatus, Jackie, who was raised in Corona and went to Newtown High, got a degree in Sociology from Hunter College after attending Queensborough Community College for a while.

“I was working and going to school full time, and I didn’t have the time,” she said. “But the interest was always there

Right now Jackie is working in administration doing payroll and bookkeeping – but looking for the right opportunity.

“I would like to work in the entertainment world,” she said.

When not at work, on a shoot or hanging out with family in Corona, you can find Jackie at the gym, working on choreography or even emceeing at parties.

“I’m giving this a shot,” Jackie said. “You never know. I could end up being in the right place at the right time.”

‘A’ Piece of Cake

The massive anniversary cake filled most of a ballroom at Antun's.

When trying to celebrate a truly monumental occasion, everything has to fit the same scale. The Queens Library decided that to ring in its 100th year anniversary, a cake of immeasurable proportions was the only appropriate measure.

This was the crème de la crème of cakes. This king of cakes, which spanned several tables and was 16-by-20 feet long, could’ve sunk the Titanic if not been confused with the gigantic ship.

The mammoth creation had 120 sheets included 1,200 pounds of cake batter, 500 pounds of fudge filling and 500 pounds of frosting for a total calorie that would have dieters seeing psychiatrists. Most of it was donated by City Harvest and distributed to the 63 library branches throughout Queens and some homeless shelters.

A portion of the cake spelled out “HAPPY ANNIVERSARY,” and one “A” – an entire sheet cake – moseyed on down to the QConf newsroom via staff photographer Ira Cohen, who covered the event.

QConf sampled portions and would like to wish the Queens Library happy 100th and our compliments to the chef.

Now, can we just get a cup of coffee with that, too?

Most Searched

Real estate listings search service www.trulia.com picked up on an interesting trend that is catapulting Queens to the real estate forefront.

The Web site recently released its February 2007 Trulia Trends report, a monthly snapshot of what consumers are searching for on trulia.com and general real estate trends.

Queens landed in the Web site’s top 10 most-searched items for the entire country—the only NYC locale to make the list.

“The eastern half of the U.S. saw the biggest percentage gains in overall search queries,” Trulia.com reported. “The sole New York entry on the Top 10 list was Queens, NY, indicating that the increase of development in the borough has been met with an increase of consumer interest.”

Really, people want to build here? We had no idea.

‘It’s Disgusting’

Rosie in Exit To Eden

The feud between Rosie O’Donnell and Donald Trump may at last be completely dead, with the property mogul landing the last blow.

According to Page Six of the New York Post, in a truly bizarre move, Trump purchased the S&M costume that O’Donnell wore in the detective movie “Exit To Eden,” and mailed it to Barbara Walters, telling the “View” host that she could pin it to her wall.

“I sent it to Barbara to hang in her office because I didn’t want it in mine. It was funny, except that it was really gross. It’s disgusting,” Trump told the Post.

Return to your corners, we’re calling this fight in the name of common decency. This has officially crossed the line from amusing to alarming.

L. Ron Monserrate

Hiram Monserrate, the independent Queens Councilman, came under fire from colleagues last week when he openly endorsed a Sept. 11 workers detoxification program sponsored by the Church of Scientology and everyone’s favorite couch-hopper, Tom Cruise.

Some 780 workers have gone through the program which includes sweating in a sauna and popping vitamins. Monserrate’s fellow Councilman Peter Vallone Jr. called it a blurry line between “cult and state,” and even the Mayor was vocal about his opposition to the controversial treatment by saying “it’s not science.”

Monserrate defended the program and Cruise and told the Post: “This has zero to do with Scientology. If it was a guy who happened to be a Scientologist who helped Sept. 11 workers, so be it. He could have been a Buddhist, he could have been an atheist, as far as I’m concerned.”

But can we really trust the guy who also thought “Eyes Wide Shut” was a good idea?

Holy Land?

As is often the case, property in Queens moves at a fast clip and at prices increase quickly – and no one, not even the church, is immune.

New Millennium United Methodist Church bought the former home of the Jewish Community Center of Bayside Hills at 211-06 48th Ave. for $3.7 million or about $250 per square foot.

They bought the site from Bay Center Associates LLC, which previously acquired the property just two years ago for $3.3 million from the original building occupants – making for a 12 percent profit in a mere 24 months.

Not bad!

However, those original occupants, the Jewish Community center bought the property 50 years ago for $10,000.

Barnard Farewell

For 13 years a woman from Queens has been heading up one of the prestigious Seven Sisters colleges – and she announced this month that she will step down..

Judith Shapiro has led Barnard College – which abuts Columbia University in Manhattan, since 1994. She will stay on through the end of the 2007-08 school year.

Author Anna Quindlen, a Barnard alum who serves as chair of the board of trustees for the college, said that Shapiro’s leadership has been stellar: “The Shapiro years have been a golden age for Barnard College, in terms of both growth and stability, and we will move forward from a position of great strength because of Judith’s fourteen years here.”

Don’t expect her plans to step down to slow her down at all. “I entered with the class of 1998 and will graduate with the class of 2008,” she said. “Like other members of the current junior class, I have much work to do between now and the end of the coming academic year.”
