Samantha Petito
Home: Ridgewood
Age: 24
Height: 5’ 7"
Weight: 118 lbs
Stats: 32-28-32
This slender gal from Ridgewood is just starting to get into the swing of modeling, though it is admittedly a second attempt.
“It is something that I have always wanted to do, at least try and have always been told that I should try it out,” she said. “So here I am.
Samantha is no stranger to the public eye. When she was 16 she competed in a Miss Teen New York Beauty Pageant. “And guess what, I lost,” she said. “I was just proud of myself for not falling off the stage and speaking clearly in the mic, not having the audience yell, ‘WHAT? And that concludes my work experience."
A veterinary technician by day, and a full-time student, Samantha is open to the idea of being a model full-time, but understands that this sort of career has limitations.
“Let’s be realistic, I still need to focus on a future if modeling is not for me and that is why I will still continue to go to school,” she said.
And when not at work or studying, do you know at which loud club or hot spot Samantha can be found hanging out?
“Hang out? Ha! I hang out in my bedroom, watching shows and movies that I TiVoed the night before,” she admitted. “I’m more of a homebody then anything else. Don’t get me wrong, everyone needs a party night, but they happen rarely. I’m not boring, I’m just lazy. Either one is not good; I just fool myself that lazy is better.”
When she does go out, it is into her favorite borough. “What is there not to like about Queens? You could work, shop, live, party and relax all in just one borough,” she said. “But I do have something to confess that may go against many Queens residents and may be considered brave by others, I am a huge Yankee fan. Sorry it had to be said, I really am.”
It’s okay Sam, there’s nothing wrong with being No. 2!

| Let’s Go, Mets
|
|
It was Flushing Night at Shea Stadium back on Aug. 10, and despite the rain and April temperatures, thousands still came out to groove to great music and take in a little pre-game entertainment before the Mets took the field.
The Jimmy Jones Jazz Band, described as a Flushing Town Hall staple, got the groove going with a 20-minute jam medley of some classic funk and jazz tunes, including Ray Charles’ version of “America” and Stevie Wonder’s “Superstitious.”
Following the band, Flushing Shaolin monks bounded onto the field and showed their martial arts abilities. The evening, sponsored by the Flushing Business Improvement District, was a great success, and BID members, as well as Councilman John Liu, were on hand to enjoy the festivities.
They were joined by Assemblywoman Ellen Young, whose red-shirted friends hooted and cheered from the upper deck when she walked out onto the field.
Unfortunately, that was some of the best cheering of the night, as the Mets blew the lead in the ninth and lost to the Marlins.

Gentrification, Here We Come!
New York University announced that space don’t come cheap in Manhattan and the university will be looking to expand into Brooklyn and Queens.
In a June 28 open house presentation concerning the growth of the university over the next 25 years, possible plans for expansion into Brooklyn, Governors Island and Long Island City were presented. The university said that it will need to expand by 6 million square feet over this time.
In addition, NYU announced a week earlier that it has leased space at Livingston Street in Brooklyn to house graduate students. If a merger with Polytechnic University goes ahead, the university may be looking toward even more growth.
Don’t want NYU invading your Queens neighborhood? The university has scheduled another open house planning discussion for Sept. 17 at 100 Washington Square East in Manhattan.

Many Bob Dylans
|
| The many faces of Bob Dylan are portratyed by (clockwise from the top left): Marcus Carl Franklin, Christian Bale, Richard Gere, Cate Blanchett, Ben Whishaw and Heath Ledger.
|
The New York Film Festival announced its lineup last week, and in this, its 45th year, the festival, will feature 28 films including the Bob Dylan biopic “I’m Not There.”
The film, directed by Todd Haynes, takes an unusual look at the former Queensite’s life in that six actors play the role of Dylan. Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett and Richard Gere are among those who will portray Dylan at different periods in his life and musical evolution.
Dylan relocated from Minneapolis to New York City in 1961 and lived near Reeves Avenue and 150th Street. Dylan’s Flushing residence afforded him the opportunity to frequently visit Woody Guthrie whose deteriorating health had landed him in Queens Village’s Creedmoor Psychiatric Center.
The film takes its title from an unreleased song that was recorded as part of the Basement Tapes. The festival runs Sept. 28 through Oct. 14.

Queens College Is Hot!
Congrats, Queens College!
QC has been named one of the 25 hottest colleges in the country by Newsweek.
As part of its annual college guide, Newsweek spotlighted 25 schools in 25 categories, including “Hottest for Sports Fans” and “Hottest in the War on Terror.”
Our very own QC was named “Hottest for First-Generation Students,” because 38 percent of the student body’s parents never attended college. The description went on to call Queens a “bargain with tuition of $4,000” and lauded the campus’ “77 acres of rolling lawns and a tree-lined quad.”
While a large contingent of our paper’s leadership throughout the year proudly call themselves QC alums, somewhere, Ray Romano, Jerry Seinfeld and Paul Simon are flashing proud smiles as they count their money after graduating from the best buy in any town.

Dumpling Duo
|
| DUMPLING GAL: Floria Lee ate her heart out as she took the Dumpling Eating title at Flushing Meadows Corona Park earlier this month.
|
How many dumplings can you eat in two minutes? I dare you to stand over your counter top and try it. Now if you go over 60, you just may have a shot at taking the crown from dumpling destroyer Joe Manchetti.
Manchetti gorged 60 dumplings at the 4th Annual Chef One Dumpling Eating Contest at Flushing Meadows Corona Park Aug. 5. His female counterpart Floria Lee, a slight woman who stands just over the 5-foot mark, ate a hearty 43 dumplings.
Women all across the United States whose thighs seem to double in size with the thought of one dumpling is in jealous agony. We are eating our hearts out Lee.
