Safiya Barclay Queens Village Age: 20 Height: 5’ 7" Weight: 115 lbs Stats: 32-23-32
Convenience and friends were two of the driving forces that led this budding young model to settle in Queens. Though she was born in Brooklyn and moved to Freeport, Long Island, at age 10, last July Safiya decided that Queens was where she wanted to be.
“Long Island is boring,” she said. “My friends are here, my boyfriend lives here. In Long Island you need to drive to get to the nearest store. Here I can just go outside.” An advertising and communications student at Nassau Community College, Safiya started modeling in '03 the way many other young models do – by getting scammed.
“I was just out of high school and this place promised to get me work.” After paying out money and getting nothing but heartache in return, she realized that she had just gone through “a learning experience.”
While visiting family in Florida, Safiya stopped by the headquarters of onemodelplace.com, where she was able to get some comp cards made.
“And I just started getting work,” she said. “I was going on casting calls, and I got selected to do some promo work for Pepsi, Redken, Lifetime TV, Toys R Us and a lot more.” Currently, the work has not been as steady. “I’m broke, and I’m trying to find a job . . . I really want to get my portfolio started, to get a book that I can take to auditions.”
Safiya said her strength lies in fashion modeling, and is hopeful that this could be a full-time career. “I always wanted to model, since I was little,” she said. “People ask me why and I say ‘Well, look at me.’ I’m not going to be timid about it. But I’m also not a conceited person. I just know how I look.”
During her down time Safiya admittedly lives a pretty boring life. “I go to the movies,” she said. “I don’t really hang out other than at the theater on Jamaica Avenue. I also go to China Buffet a lot. But I don’t really go to clubs. I’m not the club type. I just like to lay back and watch TV.”

| Queens' Chips & Putts
With Queens to thank, both Ray Romano and Kevin James have made themselves a pretty nice living. Romano was born in Forest Hills and stars in “Everybody Loves Raymond,” while James’ hit television show “The King of Queens” is all about the family that lives in the borough.
Now the pair, who are long time friends, will team up for HBO to document their attempt to make the cut at the annual pro-amateur golf tournament at Pebble Beach, in a reality special airing June 18.
Viewers will have to wait until then to see if the Queens kid, Romano, outmatches the Queens wanna-be in James, who plays the role, but is really from Suffolk County.

Madonna Not Saintly?
|
| Sinner Madonna?
|
According to the British celebrity Web site sky.com, as Pope John Paul II lay near death in Rome, superstar Madonna dressed up as a nun and was escorted to a dinner party by her husband Guy Ritchie, who came as none other than the pontiff himself. Needless to say, this was quite offensive to many Catholics. Even though Madonna’s publicist asserted, “No disrespect was intended,” William Donahue, the president of the Catholic League, went so far as calling the singer a “witch” and her husband director a “moral slug.”
Madonna, who got her start in a Forest Hills nightclub and worked as an elevator attendant at Terrace on the Park, was raised Catholic, but has since left her faith far behind. For the past six years she has been deeply involved with Kabbalah, the spiritual movement loosely related to mystical Judaism. Ritchie thinks the two faiths aren’t so different and is often quoted by Rabbi Yehuda Berg, of the Kabbalah Center, as saying “the only difference between Kabbalah and Catholicism is the amount of people.”
Madonna is set to play the transvestite Candy Darling, muse of Andy Warhol and the inspiration behind Lou Reed’s song, "Candy Says," in an upcoming film. Donahue hasn’t commented on that yet.

Bookends, Part Two
The sons of two of Queens’ favorite sons (read that twice if you need to), Harper Simon and James Garfunkel, recently graced the glossy pages of Rolling Stone in an article on "The Children of Rock."
Garfunkel, 16, and Simon, 32, both of whom are now pursuing their own musical careers, discussed the good times and not-so-good times they were dealt with growing up in the shadow of famous folks.
According to the article, Garfunkel the younger has just finished recording a demo featuring previously unreleased material written and donated by his father’s former musical partner, Paul.
Simon, child of Paul and first wife Peggy Harper, can be found about town playing electric guitar, accompanying fellow celebrity son Sean Lennon on acoustic and Cibo Matto’s Yuka Honda on keyboards. The two have been friends since childhood; they grew up together inside the Dakota, that legendary apartment building overlooking Central Park where Sean’s dad John tragically met his end.

John Rocker: Quack, Quack
|
| Off his Rocker?
|
Years after he vowed to never play for a New York baseball team, John Rocker has started his road back to the major leagues as a member of the Long Island Ducks.
“I would retire first,” said the pitcher who gained infamy as an Atlanta Brave back when he ripped the people of Queens and the beloved No. 7 train.
“It’s the most hectic, nerve-racking city. Imagine having to take the 7 train to the ballpark, looking like you’re [riding through] Beirut next to some kid with purple hair next to some queer with AIDS right next to some dude who just got out of jail for the fourth time right next to some 20-year-old mom with four kids. It’s depressing.”
The good news is Rocker’s schedule doesn’t take him through Queens. The bad news is, according to people who actually have watched him in the Atlantic League’s spring warm-up games, he’s still got a damn good arm.
His fastball is in the low 90s and he can still nail the corners of the strike zone. Analysts say they would not be surprised to see Rocker return to the bigs before the season is out.

Freedomland
Samuel L. Jackson was in Queens last weekend for the filming of his new movie, “Freedomland.” On Friday the film crew started setting up the lighting outside of the courthouse at Sutphin Boulevard.
Jackson plays a police detective who investigates the carjacking of a woman and her son. The Sutphin Boulevard Courthouse is the backdrop for one of the scenes in the film based on Richard Price’s best selling novel also titled “Freedomland.” Price also wrote the screenplay. Jackson and the film crew filmed in Westchester just days before moving to Queens for the rest of the shoot. “Freedomland” is scheduled to open in January 2006.
