Kiyana, A Winner

Kiyana
Home: St. Albans
Age: 26
Height: 5’5"
Weight: 120
Stats: 34-27-36

Growing up in St. Albans, this budding young model first became interested in the trade after being photographed in a friend’s father’s studio. In the last two years, Kiyana has been involved in promotional modeling, posing for a variety of products.

Though she would like to take up modeling full time, Kiyana is realistic: “The industry is very hard and very competitive,” she said.

When she’s not modeling, the 26-year-old works as a retail manager of Target, frequently working the “graveyard shift,” in the wee hours of the night.

Now living out from under her parents’ roof, Kiyana says that her favorite memories of growing up in her St. Albans neighborhood were sitting out on the porch or on the neighborhood streets and talking to friends. “My neighborhood was always very quiet. But I had a lot of family in the area.”

Though her free time in Queens is limited these days, Kiyana still gallivants through the city and likes to relax in the lounges of Manhattan.

Aside from modeling, Kiyana also has a great deal of creative talent and has written poetry and a number of original songs. She says that her favorite styles of music are pop and R&B.

“I’ve been singing for a long time,” she said. “When I was younger, I was in a performing dance and singing troupe with my cousins. I don’t dance anymore, but I am still very much into singing.”

Kiyana says that her best experience as a model up to this point was a leading role she held in an up-and-coming rap artist’s music video: “On and On” by Trew. Kiyana said the video took place in a house party setting in Miami. Her character in the video engages in a “cat-fight” with another girl for the rapper’s heart. “And I won,” she said.

Weird Tales

The Ramones

Fans of legendary punk outfit and Queensites the Ramones, will have reason to pogo again next month.

“Weird Tales of the Ramones,” due for release from Rhino Records Aug. 16, will bring together 85 tracks onto three discs of music and include the DVD debut of “Lifestyles of the Ramones.” The video, filled with 18 song performances from the group, was originally released in 1990.

The music discs will feature highlights spanning the band’s career from 1976 to 1996. B-side versions and rare tracks will receive equal attention alongside the group’s more popular songs, like “I Wanna Be Sedated” and “Blitzkrieg Bop.”

And, yes, a scorching version of “Rockaway Beach” will be found in the mix.

NBA or NRA?

Alan Henderson has guns

Hey Alan, didn’t your mother ever tell you not to play with guns?

11-year NBA veteran Alan Henderson was recently arrested for carrying a firearm while traveling through JFK Airport. Henderson, 32, was released without bail after appearing before a judge in Queens Criminal Court in Kew Gardens. It was not known if the 6’9" forward/center had a permit for the gun, or where he intended to fly.

The 1995 first round pick is currently playing for the Dallas Mavericks, but apparently forgot that he wasn’t in Texas anymore. The loaded 9-mm pistol was found in a metal lock box while his luggage was going through airport screeners. One thing that the screeners failed to find was Alan’s talent. The one-time NBA Most Improved Player averaged a measly 3.5 points per game this past season.

Henderson’s court date is set for August 25, and if convicted, he could face 15 years in prison.

ArchSenator Padavan

Frank Padavan (r.) has been serving the residents of Northeast Queens in NY Senate for 33 years. Like Padavan, Archbishop Demitrous (l.), who was consecrated as a Bishop in 1967, elevated to Metropolitan in 1991 and enthroned as Archbishop of America in 1999, has also been a steadfast worker seeking to protect those whom he serves.Maybe it’s the glasses, but if you put a beard and tunic on Sen. Padavan do you think he’d be able to lead mass in the Greek Orthodox Church without anybody batting an eyelash?

MTV's Queens Barbershop

In Eddie Murphy’s 1988 hit film “Coming To America,” the funny-man played an African prince who wanted to fall in love and marry, rather than get hitched to the woman chosen by his family. Where else would he go to find a Queen, than to the borough of Queens?

Though landmarks of Queens, such as the Wendy’s on Queens Boulevard in Rego Park, were very prominently displayed, a few of the funniest moments in the film took place inside a black Queens barbershop.

Filmmakers have attributed those scenes as the inspiration behind the successful “Barbershop” series of films released in the last few years.

And now the barbershop idea has come full circle. MTV announced recently that it will create a new reality TV show about a Queens barbershop that cultivates talent for the hip-hop music scene. The show will be executive produced by former Sony Entertainment head Tommy Mottola.

DMC Needs To Run

DMC: Darryl McDaniels

He may be the King of Rock, but he isn’t the King of the Courts.

After playing his first game in a charity three-on-three basketball tournament, DMC, of rap group Run DMC, caught his breath in a VIP green room and told reporters he hadn’t played ball in three years. Though he says he’s in good shape, it’s not basketball shape, with all its running, ands jumping.

“My muscles are going to be sore tomorrow morning,” he said.

He did manage to drop in three points, however, more than he thought he’d score.

All the pain was for a good cause, The Cathy’s Children’s Foundation, which raised over $75,000 in South Ozone Park over the weekend to help disadvantaged urban youth with their education.
