Keep Your Eye On Laura
|
|
Laura Tassey spends most of her time in transit.
The 21-year-old lives in Howard Beach and has to travel to Staten Island for class. She’s studying physical therapy at the College of Staten Island, but what she really wants to do is model.
“Ever since I was little people told me I should model,” Laura said, describing her looks as “typical Barbie.”
Of course taking classes in anatomy and physiology serves her well at the gym.
“When you’re working out it’s good to know what muscles you’re working,” she said.
Although perfecting her image is important to Laura, she’s committed to earning her degree.
“It’s a really tough business so it’s good to have a backup plan,” she said.
But this realist can still dream big; talk to her and it’s clear she’s already imagining the billboards.
“I would really love to be a Guess or Bebe model,” she said. “Those are my two main goals.”
Laura auditioned for Americas Next Top Model and didn’t get picked, but she is staying busy taking photos with Nick Beneduce, a photographer from Ozone Park.
“When someone thinks you’re beautiful and then you’re modeling it’s such a confidence boost,” Laura said. “It makes you feel really good.”
As a kid, Laura would avoid smiling for the camera.
“I had a broken nose, I had crooked teeth, my hair was extremely short,” she said. “I hated taking pictures when I was younger.”
But when she graduated from high school, her mother asked if she wanted surgery. Apparently a nose job did the trick because now Laura sees a future in posing before the lens.
“It helped a lot – it really did,” she said, adding, “It didn’t change who I was.”
Laura enjoys spending time with her family in Brooklyn and hanging out with her cousin and friends who attend St. Johns University.
“I don’t come off as a typical model,” she said, adding, “I don’t play the part outside of the studio.”

| Steinway Beer Garden is a cabon copy of Astoria's Bohemian Beer Garden in the new Grand Theft Auto IV video game
|
The latest and greatest video craze just hit the shelves when Grand Theft Auto IV was released to eager fans.
This time the videogame dynasty chose New York City as its playground of criminal corruption, excuse me, Liberty City.
Much has been said about the exclusion of Staten Island but cheers for including Queens’ famed Bohemian Beer Garden, excuse me, Duke’s famed Steinway Beer Garden. I guess coming up with witty names wasn’t a priority for the designers.
But now you can stroll the neighborhood without leaving the couch, horary!

ABC Loves Liu
It’s not official but ABC’s Cashmere Mafia, filmed at Silvercup Studios in Long Island City, looks like it will not be returning next season.
Current star of the show and former Jackson Heights resident Lucy Liu is in talks according to published reports about a regular role on “Dirty Sexy Money,” another show on the ABC network.
Liu’s new character is being kept on the down-low but it’s probably safe to say she’ll be sexy and scandalous.
Liu and ABC first formed a relationship during her brief stint on “Ugly Betty.”
If you can’t wait for more Liu, you can catch her voice making an appearance in the animated “Kung-Fu Panda,” which opens June 6.

| Madonna Frenches in France
|
Madonna is hoping to keep your interest piqued in her career and new album, “Hard Candy.”
What tricks does the one time Corona resident have up her sleeve you ask? Well, there is one trick the Material Girl recycles every time the publicity train rolls by – a lesbian lip lock.
At a concert in Paris, the Queen of Pop, with a bottle of champagne in one hand and a guitar slung around her neck, crushed her lips against a back up dancer. And voila, Madonna frenched in France.

Watch That Chain
The Queens-born rapper 50 Cent had his diamond chain snatched by a fan during a concert in Angola.
According to MTV, the crazed fan grabbed the diamond encrusted necklace from the famed rap singer mid-song.
On his website, ThisIs50.com a statement explaining the situation said, “Recently 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks and Tony Yayo were performing in Angola, Africa. Being that security was limited fans were able to interact with the group on stage.”
“However one fan had a different motive and bit off more than he can chew, as he attempted to run up on 50 and snatch his chain.”
According to TMZ.com, 50 Cent caught up with the thief and reclaimed his necklace.
A source told the website, “The chain is around 50’s neck right now.”

Makin’ It In New York

| Is Ugly Betty coming home?

Imagine: a show about New York City being filmed in New York City!
That scenario is on the horizon as ABC will shift the production of “Ugly Betty,” currently filmed in Los Angeles, to New York.
“Ugly Betty” tells the story of an unsightly young woman from Queens who works for a Manhattan-based fashion magazine. Despite the location, filming has been done almost entirely in Los Angeles. The New York scenery is all created digitally. Blue screens and computer imaging, along with video pre-shot and superimposed, are used to take out the L.A. look and insert the New York vibe.
This just may be the first lemming to make the jump from the West Coast to the East Coast after Gov. David Paterson signed legislation giving tax breaks to production companies.
While the decision has yet to be confirmed, ABC officials have acknowledged the new tax situation has them looking at moving the show to the Big Apple.
And if it goes through, “Ugly Betty” would be the third-highest-rated prime-time show – that isn’t a reality show – made in New York, behind “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” and “Law & Order.”
