Katie Loves Queens

Katie
Home: Jamaica
Age: 19
Height: 5’ 4"
Weight: 115 lbs
Stats: 34-25-36

Though she is still broken-hearted over the Baltimore Ravens’ loss to the Indianapolis Colts in the first round of the playoffs, this former Maryland resident who is currently a student at St. John’s feels she can get over the loss.

“I’m learning to deal with it,” she said of the loss to the former Baltimore team.

Fortunately, Katie’s got plenty going on in Queens to keep her mind off her hometown team. This model, who is a journalism and communications major at SJU, spent the last year working at the Barnes & Noble on Union Turnpike, though she is currently seeking employment elsewhere. Some nights she works as a “shot girl” over at Blagio, a club on Queens Boulevard in Woodside.

Getting into modeling was simply a matter of following in her sister’s footsteps.

“I started about a year ago, when I went to some car shows with my sister,” Katie said. “Since then I’ve done some real work, paid work, in print and high fashion.”

A self-described outgoing person, Katie said she feels comfortable in front of the lens. She is hoping to meld that comfort with her news degree to work her way into broadcast journalism.

While she toils away in school, though, she is falling in love with Queens. “I love everything about it,” she said. “I plan on living here the rest of my life.”

After school and work at the club, Katie finds herself spending most of her time at home. “I like to sit in my house; I can actually be quite quiet at times,” she said, bursting into laughter.

Catch Roker’s Buzz

Queens native Al Roker

Queens native and “Today Show” weatherman Al Roker has the perfect way to get your morning off to a bright start – combine your coffee with his weather report.

The new Melitta coffee maker hit the market recently at $200, offering not just to grind your beans and brew you fresh coffee but also to give the day’s weather on the side window. The Melitta coffee maker, which is the first of its kind, displays real-time weather information on a 2-inch screen from the jovial NBC weather reporter.

Roker will endorse and promote the product within the next few weeks with his catch phrase, “If you want to know what’s happening in your neck of the woods right now, just turn to your coffee maker!”

Maloney Money

U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney is glad to see that the new, 10-year dollar coin program (yeah, those big, heavy quarter-look-alikes that you only get when the subway vending machines spit them back at you as change) has begun.

Every year, four presidents will be featured on the coin, which on its rear side, will have a lady more recognizable than her predecessors – Sacagawea and Susan B. Anthony. Our very own Statue of Liberty will grace the coins' backs.

But don’t forget the first ladies. Corresponding commemorative coins will be released honoring them as well.

Calling the coins “winners,” Maloney is certain that they will make money for the government while they serve as “valuable teaching tools.” Apparently, the U.S. treasury has “inspired a greater historical awareness of the 50 states” (and generated about $6 billion) with it’s 50-state quarter program.

And, to really top it off, the coins were released just in time for President’s Day, so students could exchange and collect them outside of history class. Too bad they got President’s Day off.

Diamond Ride

Diamonds are a girl’s best friend—until she leaves them in the back seat of a Queens cab.

Osman Chowdhury of Sunnyside discovered a suitcase with 31 diamond rings in the back of his cab, and rather than running to cash in on the forgotten treasure, he tracked down the owner.

The penny-pinching Dallas woman tipped the cabbie a measly 30 cents on her ride. After returning the precious gems—estimated at $30,000—the Texan showed her gratitude with a $100 check. Someone needs a refresher course in southern hospitality.
