Just Getting Warmed Up

Elizabeth Wagner
Home: Astoria
Age: 22
Height: 5’ 5"
Weight: 105 lbs
Stats: 34-26-34

When Elizabeth Wagner is not folding lingerie at Saks Fifth Avenue, she imagines herself posing in front of a camera as a model. The 22-year-old who lives in Astoria recently graduated from the University of Massachusetts with a theater degree and moved to New York to chase her dreams of either appearing in a magazine or performing on stage as an actress.

“I went to UMass for Theater,” she said. “I hadn’t considered modeling, until I got some headshots and someone said I should try it.”

But the New York industry hasn’t been easy.

“I definitely work for some good people [but] some people I should have checked out more first,” she said. “There’s a couple photographers who were very unprofessional and inappropriate. I would definitely say to anyone just starting out, do your research first, checks their references.”

Besides selling bras and panties, Wagner is an accomplished fencer and pianist and enjoys writing.

She spends her time hanging out with friends in Manhattan, but likes some of the eateries along Ditmars Boulevard.

Wagner has only been in New York for six months and said she isn’t discouraged just yet. She can’t wait for her phone to ring with modeling or acting jobs.

“Who knows what will happen?” she said. “Right now I am just getting warmed up.” -

Gabba, gabba, huh?

Ramones For Kids!

With three of the original Ramones down and one still kicking, or at least still trying to kick it, parents throughout Queens may believe they can finally remove the hands that were firmly pressed against their kids’ ears.

Wait! Not so quickly…. there’s something spreading through the airwaves, and it’s a tad catchier than the Forest Hills punks put out: “Brats on the Beat: Ramones for Kids!”

The compilation jammed with child-friendly renditions of Ramones songs is skillfully reviving an era of punk that was nearly drowned by a tidal wave of Queens hip-hop in the mid-80s.

What’s interesting is that the punk rockers that are leading the Ramones classics on this compilation, were little kids when the rock pioneers were at their peak.

The punkers only sing lead; for all of the choruses and background vocals, they are joined by the Gabba Gabba Hey Singers, a bunch of recluse kids.

A portion of the proceeds from sales will benefit St. Jude’s Children’s Hospitals.

Not So Rosie

Fighting with Queens

When Rosie O’Donnell is not getting under the skin of Councilman John Liu, or badmouthing Queens native Donald Trump all over the airwaves, she has somehow managed to piss off other Queensites.

O’Donnell booked a summer cruise for gay and lesbian families — with a minor catch: other people had already scheduled their vacations on the ship at the same time. Case in point: the 16-member Goddard family from Queens, who planned to celebrate two birthdays and a wedding anniversary during the July 7-14 cruise to Bermuda and the Bahamas.

Some blamed Norwegian for kicking off regular folk for a celebrity, but Janet Goddard Brown said O’Donnell should know better.

“I don’t care if it’s Rosie O’Donnell or the religious right,” Brown said. “Do it a year in advance before anybody makes final plans for a vacation,” she said.

Oh Mandy!

Alicia Keys

Now that Alicia Keys has gotten her taste of the big screen, she just wants more. The singer/actress is currently in theaters playing an assassin in “Smokin’ Aces” opposite Ben Affleck and in April will hit theaters again in “The Nanny Diaries” with Scarlett Johansson, but Keys is really keyed up about playing silver screen roles.

According to eonline.com, she is “jumping through hoops” in an attempt to get Disney to hire her as the lead of its upcoming animated musical, “The Frog Princess.” Keys is clamoring to play the history-making role of the first black Disney princess, Mandy.

According to one online blogger, Keys actually called Disney’s studio chief, Dick Cook, directly to let him know how much she wanted the gig.

Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson and her “Dreamgirls” co-star and Tony Award winner Anika Noni Rose are top contenders for the lead role of Mandy, a young southern girl living in New Orleans during the roaring ’20s Jazz Age.

The blogger claims that one of the big questions is if Keys can do a Southern accent cwith her New York voice.

However, Keys got a callback for a second audition.

Azaria’s Loyalty

Forest Hills' Azaria

Most celebrities are not known for remaining loyal and committed, whether it is to their constantly-changing spouses or a new diet fad. But, Queens native Hank Azaria is breaking the mold.

The 42-year-old actor, who hails from Forest Hills, will be starring in the upcoming “The Simpsons Movie,” which is scheduled for release this year. Continuing as the voice-over of several characters in the movie, including Moe Szyslak and Apu, Azaria is pleasing Simpson’s fans and keeping intact the authenticity of the characters.

Sticking to the series that launched him into his movie career, and brought with it fame and fortune, is a demonstration of character for Azaria, who also starred in “The Birdcage” and “Godzilla.”

Now all that remains to be seen is how he’ll display his devotion to Queens.

It's In The Water

NASDAQ's Bob Greifeld

Queens is the breeding ground of some of the sharpest business minds in the country. Carl Icahn, Richard Parsons and Donald Trump all called Queens home as they grew up. And if being successful in business simply is thanks to something in our water, then NASDAQ’s CEO must have been raised on the bottled brands.

Bob Greifeld, 49, who grew up in Queens, had led NASDAQ to acquire a 28.75 percent stake of the London Stock Exchange, but when he offered to pay nearly $25 a share for remaining stock so NASDAQ could take over, he only won over one half of one percent of the stockholders.

This has been described as a serious slap in the face to Greifeld and his company, especially since it is their second failed attempt within the last year.

In trying to set up the deal, Greifeld leveraged $1 billion in debt, causing NASDAQ stock to switch to “junk status” and making it vulnerable itself to a hostile takeover.

All this comes from the Queens kid who put himself through business school and wrote a Master’s thesis on the future of NASDAQ. Maybe he should have put down the water bottle and filled his glass at the tap like the rest of us.
