Janice Carter
Springfield Gardens
Age: 8
Height: 3’ 9"
Weight: 79 lbs
Starting out at a very young age, 8-year-old Janice Carter has already taken a big liking to modeling. Even while reading Social Studies books and toying with multiplication tables in her third grade class at PS 11, Janice already has a profile on www.onemodelplace.com and is pursuing modeling for children’s wear.
“I like wearing the makeup on my face and all the different costumes you get to dress up in,” said Janice, who also goes by the nicknames “Jah Jah” and “Jazzy Jah.”
When she is not modeling, Janice can usually be found doing what she likes best, which is playing outside in her yard, drawing pictures, or helping out in the kitchen with cooking chores. When the weather is nice, she also likes to swim in her pool.
After growing up in Brooklyn, Janice and her mother, Erica, moved to Queens . They now live in Springfield Gardens.
“The places I like to go in Queens are Roy Wilkins Park, Jamaica Avenue, and to the movies,” she said. “I like the big houses in Queens and going on the Long Island Railroad.”
Like many young children, Janice has great aspirations for when she grows up. She said that she would like to continue on with modeling and her drawing talents, and would also like to be a writer.
It seems that Janice is starting in the right direction.

| Valarie Pettiford
|
Valarie Pettiford is at it again, singing and dancing her way to great heights, but this time the Bernice Johnson Theater of the Performing Arts protégée is doing flexing her vocal chords for those in need.
The Queens triple threat, (yes, she can sing, dance and act,) is hitting the stage of Cal State University Los Angeles’ Luckman Fine Arts Complex in March to raise a few bucks for AIDS charities and salute the works of Betty Comden and the late Adolph Green. The show titled Do Re Mi— Comden & Green’s Broadway, is part of the 22nd Annual Southland Theatre Artists Goodwill Event.
Even though this songbird is known for her big break in the chorus of the hit film The Wiz, and for her work on the sets of Another World and One life to Live, oh yeah, and on the big screen along side Lil Bow Wow in Like Mike, she’s no stranger to the stage. Pettiford can even prove it with the Tony Award nominations she got for the award winning musical Fosse.

She’s A Witch – Again
|
| Susan Sarandon formerly of Forest Hills
|
One-time Forest Hills resident Susan Sarandon is putting her pointy hat back on and pulling her broomstick out of the closet to show movie-goers just how wicked she can be.
Susan Sarandon recently agreed to play an evil queen named Narissa for Walt Disney Pictures’ latest attempt to pull the real and animated world together. She got a feel for the wickedness by attending prosthetic modeling sessions that will enhance her character, who is intent on destroying true love in the film “Enchanted.” Earlier in her career she starred in “The Witches of Eastwick” as – you guessed it, a witch.
“Enchanted” centers on a princess-in-waiting who is banished from a classical animation world by a Sarandon and dumped into a modern-day, live-action Manhattan.
There still isn’t any word on who will play the role of the urban inept princess, but we’re pulling for another Queens gal.

| Jose Lima with his wife as Lima sang the National Anthem before a Dodger game in 2004
|
The Mets signed pitcher Jose Lima from the Kansas City Royals last week, offering him a minor league contract and a chance to come to Shea. Lima, who was 5 and 16 last year, was on one of the worst teams in baseball. His less-than-.500 lifetime win/loss ratio and his life 5.12 ERA don’t exactly ender him to all the Mets fans, but how much worse is he than some of the other winners we’ve had over the years?
But how about his wife? Judging from this shot of Lima’s wife next to him as he sang the National Anthem in 2004, we think Lima will be very welcome – by at least half of New York. Welcome.

It's A Dog's World
Anthony Weiner is a Queens Congressman known, among other things, for his sense of humor.
After taking a look recently at homeland security expenditures, the Weiner apparently felt that the joke was on the American public.
He put together a detailed report of what he called “the most outrageous homeland security spending boondoggles.” Among the millions of dollars that are supposed to be used to fight terrorism, the Congressman pointed out that there are many unnecessary programs being funded. The main “boondoggle” that he cited was bulletproof vests for dogs.
We should all rest easy now, for the immediate future, at least the dogs may be safe.

| 50 Cent: Bulletproof, sets a new video game standard for kids
|
Sure, the guy can sell CDs and movie tickets (along with what he used to sell on the streets of Jamaica), but did you know that Queens’ own Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson is now leading the way in the videogame market?
Released in November, “50 Cent: Bulletproof” has sold more than 1 million copies for Play Station 2 and Xbox. A PSP version is due out soon.
The game features an international conspiracy of some kind or another, but the key is that you get to see 50 Cent and the whole G-Unit crew wielding a wide variety of handguns, shotguns and other weapons, making mincemeat of the “bad” guys. You can “grab enemies to use as shields,” “steal their valuables” and more.
Yeah, the game may feature a lot of new music and special guest appearances from Eminem and Dr. Dre, but basically it’s a shoot-em-up festival.
And people thought the poster for his movie was tasteless…
