Jamaican Jewel

Stephanie thought she was just going to support her cousin when she followed her to an audition but the photographer twisted her arm.
“I didn’t plan on trying out,” she said “But I ended up doing a shoot.”
Since that fateful event in 2001, Stephanie hasn’t looked back and went on to become a reputable model in her home country of Jamaica.
“I was doing some print work and fashion week in Jamaica,” she said.
When Stephanie moved to Rosedale in April she brought her work ethic with her.
“I’ve been developing my portfolio since I got here,” she said.
She is currently working with Palm Rock, a booking agency for first class entertainers, actors and models.
Ideally she would like to get work on television but she knows that will take time.
In the meantime, Stephanie likes where she’s at in Queens.
“There’s a lot of Jamaicans here, it feels like home,” she said.
Also high on her list is going to parties where they play dancehall music, a Jamaican music sounding a lot like reggae but with faster rhythms for dancing.
But Stephanie said her dream is to one day write a book.
“I write in my journal every day,” she said.

A group of drag queens slated to appear at a Queens beauty pageant ran into some drama recently at Rockefeller Center.
Lights! Camera! Action! But it wasn’t so easy for a ferosh flock of drag queens posing pretty for pictures outside Rockefeller Center. While other people had no problem taking pictures, security guards ordered the colorfully clan to stop flashing their cameras in the plaza.
“They wouldn’t give us a reason for why we couldn’t be there, but we’re pretty sure it’s because of how we were dressed,” one of the drag queens told the Daily News.
The drag queens are members of the Miss Chiva Colombia team and hissed in Spanish when they were told to vacate the area by the guards. After one of the guards noticed the drama was being videotaped, the members were allowed to stay for a bit.
Despite being allowed to stay, the group is suing Rockefeller Center and its owner Tishman Speyer. They also filed discrimination complaints with the state Division of Human Rights. A Rockefeller Center spokesman said they do not discriminate.
So the next time you want to take pictures outside Rockefeller Center, remember, don’t wear too much make up, or wear fab clothing. Wait . . . does that rule out most women in New York?

Actress Goldie Hawn may be from Washington, D.C., but she got her start right here in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. The Academy Award winner was introduced to the world of entertainment at the World’s Fair where she made as splash as a go-go dancer in the 60s.
Hawn won her Oscar in 1970 for a performance in “Cactus Flower,” but it was her appearance two years later in “Butterflies Are Free” that caught the attention of the AV Club editors who referred to Hawn as the quintessential “Manic Pixie Dream Girl” in last week’s issue.
What’s a “Manic Pixie Dream Girl” you ask? According to the AV Club it’s that “sentient ray of sunshine sent from heaven to warm the heart and readjust the attitude of even the broodiest, most uptight male protagonist.”
Given all the rain we’ve been getting lately, maybe it’s time for Ms. Hawn to move back to Queens!

Gotti Gets Got

| John “Junior” Gotti
|
They're back!
John “Junior” Gotti has definitely spent a lot of time tied up in the courts and away from his daddy’s mansion in Ozone Park over the past few years and it looks like he won’t be coming home for a while.
A recent indictment on conspiracy charges in Florida linked him to a large-scale cocaine ring and three murders in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Junior is the son of the late crime boss John Gotti. He was arrested at his Long Island home and accused of continuing in his family business.
According to published reports, the indictment links Junior to the slayings of George Grosso in Queens in 1988; Louis DiBono, who was killed in the parking garage of the World Trade Center in Manhattan in 1990; and Bruce John Gotterup, killed in 1991 at the Boardwalk in the Rockaways. It also accuses him of possession and trafficking of more than 5 kilograms of cocaine.

| Far Rockaway's Carl Icahn
|
Far Rockaway born and bred billionaire investor Carl Icahn was recently featured on CBS News’ premiere news magazine 60 Minutes telling interviewer Leslie Stahl he always makes money for his investors.
The Aug. 10 airing was actually a rebroadcast of a show originally taped in March, and no addendum was needed.
When asked about the so called “Icahn Lift” he supposedly provides to companies after his investment firm takes over an under performing asset, he was confident as ever, telling Stahl, “I make money. Nothing wrong with that. That’s what I want to do. That’s what I’m here to do. That’s what I enjoy.”
First decried as a corporate raider in the bustling 80s, many now refer to Icahn as an activist. However he chooses to describe himself, he’s not just rich, he’s wealthy.
Icahn’s net worth was recently valued by Forbes as the 24th wealthiest person on the planet, with assets totaling $8.5 billion.
Not bad for a Jewish kid from Far Rockaway.

Lost Luggage
Previously named Idlewild Airport, Kennedy Airport is celebrating its 60th anniversary. In the airport’s early days, locals would regularly gather at the foot of the runways to watch airplanes take off and land. According to a recent piece in the Times, the spectacle would draw upwards of 3,500 people every week.
Now, 60 years later, JFK can still be consumed by crowds, like on a recent Wednesday when a computer software glitch caused the baggage sorting conveyor belt to malfunction. This led to a huge luggage pileup and at least 20 delays.
It’s safe to say that the passengers bound for those 20 flights stood and watched as airplanes took off and landed with remarkably much less delight.
