I Was The Girl That Did That

Ever posed for the camera in a basement full of spiders? Or been wrapped in Saran Wrap and placed on a bench on 5th Avenue? Maybe you’ve bent over backwards and placed your head under a table top drill?

No? Well, Sin Dee has, and she has the pictures to prove it.
“I’ve just had a lot of experience with weird requests from photographers,” she said. “But I love anything artistic, just watching someone’s wheels turn and seeing the end product.”

Sin Dee also does a lot of cheesecake (as in, “better than cheesecake”) - or pinup - modeling. She has been modeling now for almost three years and it was a natural progression from her professional and artistic desires.

“With the passion I had for fashion and being into self expression, I really got into modeling,” said Sin Dee, who studied at the Laboratory Institute of Merchandising and currently has a full-time job in the marketing industry. “The two combined very well.”

Sin Dee is a born-and-raised Queensite and one of her favorite things about living here is having everything at her fingertips.

“I’d have to say you can find absolutely anything anywhere within walking distance,” she said of her Jackson Heights community. “You can just walk down to the corner and buy cheap lingerie, an awesome dress and some great Spanish food.”

“I’m at Shea Stadium a lot,” she said. “My mother is a huge Mets fan. She must have Mets Merchandise all over the place. Whenever she has a spare ticket, I’m at Shea Stadium with her.”

And while her part-time profession has placed her in some unusual predicaments, Sin Dee said it comes with its benefits.

“When you get the pictures, it’s worth it,” she said. “And you can say, ‘Yes, I was the girl that did that.’”

Tomorrow Land

The blog Modern Machanix got their hands on an April 1965 issue of National Geographic featuring the worlds of tomorrow, that is, Queens.

The World’s Fair spread shows just how incredible Flushing Meadow Park once was. Many of the photos show rides and attractions that have long disappeared.

For today’s whippersnappers, they’ve only know the degrading, rusty and neglected eyesore it sadly is today.

I Had That Idea!

A Queens man sold www.pizza.com for $2.6 million

The saying, patience is a virtue, is worth a whopping $2.6 million. Queens native Chris Clark purchased the domain name pizza.com for $20 14-years ago and last Thursday the name made him more than $2 million richer when he sold the site at an online auction.

How many slices is that?

The Post Fidel Sopranons

For decades, many Cubans have wondered what lay in store for them in a post-Fidel world.

Now they know. It’s full of DVD’s, cell phones, microwaves - and HBO’s “The Sopranos.”

The show, which was filmed at Silvercup Studios in Long Island City, will be part of a Thursday night must-see TV line up, which will also feature other American programming such as “Grey’s Anatomy.”

Though some U.S. shows, like “Friends” and “Everybody Loves Raymond,” have been staples of the communist country’s airwaves for years, some pundits claim the arrival of shows like “The Sopranos” marks another huge step forward for the island.

Fidel Castro retired from his position as dictator just two months ago and since then, change has been coming quickly. Last month, shoppers stretched out the doors of department stores to get their hands on new appliances, like DVD players and rice cookers. And while Cuba has had cell phone service since 1991, until recently it was only available to high-up politicos or foreign workers.

“The Sopranos,” which was broadcast on the cable network from Jan. 10, 1999 to June 10, 2007, is the most financially successful show in television history, paving the way for many successful dramas that followed. It spawned a variety of merchandise including books, a video game and a soundtrack album.

Queens Musicians Feud

Queens kids: 50 cent & Alicia Keys

South Jamaica born rapper Curtis Jackson, a.k.a 50 Cent, and Laurelton raised R&B songstress Alicia Keys are clashing over comments that Keys made in a recent interview with Blender magazine.

“I don’t like Alicia Keys no more...If she thinks what they consider gangsta music is to bring black people down, then I think my s*** falls into that category,” Jackson told MTV. “I don’t like people who don’t like me.”

Keys modified position is summarized in a statement she released:

“My comments about ‘gangsta rap’ were in no way trying to suggest that the government is responsible for creating this genre of rap music. The point that I was trying to make was that the term was over-sloganized by some of the media causing reactions that were not always positive. Many of the ‘gangsta rap’ lyrics articulate the problems of the artists’ experiences and I think all of us, including our leaders, could be doing more to address these problems including drugs, gang violence, crime, and other related social issues, “ she said.

Dissing The Council

Nas' new Album 'Nigger'

Not even the Queens rappers are showing the City Council any respect.

Remember Leroy Comrie’s ban the “n-word” resolution passes by the Council?

Well, it appears that the Council’s leadership in the hip hop community is as effective as it’s tracking of community organizations it funds in the budget.

Queens Rapper Nas let us all know of what he thinks of banning the “n-word.” His new album, to be released on July 1, is titled, “Nigger.”

The first single attributed to the album, “Be A Nigger Too” was leaked by mixed tapes and on the Internet.
What’s Nas up to?

A publicity stunt? Taking creative expression too far? Dissing the City Council?

You be the judge.
