Howard Beach Sisters

Name: Alyssa Age 14 Ht. 5’3 Wt: 108 Name: Christina Age 13 Ht. 5’5 Wt:105
Here are two more good reasons to check out Howard Beach. Sisters Alyssa and Christina – who are only 14 months apart – are stepping directly from their Howard Beach streets right in front of fashion photographers.
Although fashion scouts spotted the girls previously, it was a family friend who doubles as a shutterbug who got the sisters to pose for the first time. Once they did, the two opened up about fashion tips, their neighborhood and how far they want to go.
“If you want to wear make up, don’t make it too visible,” said Alyssa, who suggested other fashion-conscious women should try to “look like you’re a natural beauty.”
“I want to be in a magazine, or a billboard. Something like that,” she said.
As for Christina, looking good means heading to Mandees. “I love Mandees [in Ozone Park]. And the Limited Too.” Why? “The clothes there are colorful. The shirts are different. They have things on it. I don’t like plain jeans.”
Although Alyssa sounded more enthusiastic about shopping, she added, “At my old school, I used to do my hair and make up because boys were there. But now I go to a Catholic school and its all girls, so I just put my hair up.” She added, “I like going and not caring what I look like, but when I go out, I get dressed up.”
Whatever the occasion, Alyssa and Christina agree on where in Queens to go shopping: “Every weekend me and my mom go to Queens Center Mall,” said Alyssa.
While Alyssa speaks freely about her modeling, her sister is a bit reluctant, saying she’s only told “a few of my friends. ” When asked about the neighborhood, Alyssa said the fashion was just as trendy as every other part of Queens, but admitted, “there’s a lot of drama here.”

| Rockaway native Steve Stevens
|
In the early 1980s, when Billy Idol burst onto the scene with his “Rebel Yell” album, he was accompanied by a guitarist with huge hair and scathing licks.
Steve Stevens, a Rockaway native, has mostly played folk and Flamenco guitar in the years since, and said in a recent interview that he finds it strange that most people know him only for his work with the English punk wannabe. He has worked as a producer and has composed the soundtrack for three films.
Nearly 20 years since Stevens and Idol parted ways musically, they have decided to come back together for Idol’s new tour.
“I think for a lot of fans, the fact that I’ve known Billy and we’ve by and large worked together or at least maintained a friendship for 23 years, which is a lot longer than most people’s marriages, for them to come to a show and see us together and having fun, that’s a factor that you just can’t buy,” Stevens said.
Billy Idol and Steve Stevens bring their show to Radio City Music Hall Sept. 8.

Just Too Busy

| Bayside's Rob Kindler
|
Rob Kindler, a native of Bayside, is the global head of mergers & acquisitions for J.P. Morgan Chase – a role that has had a negative impact on his social life.
According to a recent report in the Wall Street Journal, Kindler’s constant traveling and wheeling & dealing have forced him to withdraw from his prominent society role – flautist for a community orchestra in Westchester.
Kindler had been recruited by Colgate University for music, and spent much of his youth playing flute and bassoon.
“I tried to get back into it,” said Kindler. “Then my schedule just got to be too much. It was very disappointing to me. I just kept going and kept going and I couldn’t make it anymore,” he told the WSJ.
For the man who led the merger of Chase and J.P. Morgan (as well as AOL and Time Warner), he sure can make a buck or two – the AOL deal brought in $35 million in legal fees. If only he could find a better way to spend his time.

How convenient would it be to take a vacation along the Jersey shore without ever leaving Long Island City? If you’re scratching your head, hold on. The shore we’re talking about here is the 400 tons of sand shipped to Queens from New Jersey by Tom Fox and Douglas Durst of NY Water Taxi. With the help of chef Harry Hawk, they’ve brought a genuine beachside bar and grill to Hunter’s Point.
Well, okay, it’s not genuine. Access to the water isn’t allowed, and a streamer-lined barrier mars the view of Manhattan. But the 15,000 square-foot “beach” is still a delightful summer respite from the hustle and bustle, especially with $1 cans of beer and $4 burgers—all served by a shoeless wait staff.
But you’ll have to hurry if you want to visit; New York Water Taxi Beach is only open Fridays through Sundays until midnight, and will close completely after Labor Day.

Lost in Translation

| Sing Tao article posted on Bryan Pu-Folkes' site
|
City Council candidate Bryan Pu-Folkes is more than happy to show visitors on his web site all the positive things the media is saying about him.
One link prominently states that Pu-Folkes was “noticed” in a Tribune article.
Another article talks about Pu-Folkes’ support in the Asian community, but we’ll have to take Pu-Folkes’ word on what the article actually says.
It appeared in Sing Tao, a Chinese daily newspaper, and Pu-Folkes’ Web site doesn’t provide an English version of the article at http://www.bryanpufolkes.com/singtao.html.
Maybe it was simply lost in translation.

Miller Comes Clean
He may not know how much his mailings cost, but Council Speaker and mayoral candidate Gifford Miller knows about garbage laws.
While campaigning in Astoria, Miller’s campaign team posted their trademark blue signs affixed to what seemed like every lightpole near the Ditmars train station. By the time QConf walked around the corner, grabbed coffee and came back, all the signs were gone.
A vendor near the station pointed to two members of Miller’s campaign entourage and said they had just taken them down.
Now if they can only take back those mailings.
