Hanging Out And Modelling

Soomyo
Home: Flushing
Age: 23
Height: 5’ 3"
Weight: 110 lbs
Stats: 34-25-36

For Soomyo, a pharmacist during the week and a model on weekends, being Asian has not always been an advantage. I lived in Astoria most of my life, and I moved to Flushing close to a decade ago, said the Bryant High School grad.

“I’m short and I’m Asian, which wasn’t always that good for me,” she said. “When I was younger I got picked on for it.”

But her self-image was restored one day when she was 17.

“I was shopping for Christmas gifts, and I didn’t have that much money, and I was being very picky about what I was buying. Then I met somebody from Trans-Continental Talent who asked me to come in for test shoot. I’ve always been approached by scouts and I always thought they’re on crack or something. They’ll see that I’m short. I mean, I always thought of runway models, and I wasn’t really aware of the different sectors of modeling.”

Soomyo has been working for some time now, and figures she’s actually getting photo shoots because she is Asian.

“I’ve noticed recently that there has been a lot of attention in Asian females, Asian art – my chinky eyes have to pay for something,” she said, laughing.

When it comes to a future in modeling, though, Soomyo is a realist.

“I really don’t expect a lot from it,” she said. “I don’t think I’ll become an overnight sensation.”

Meanwhile, she’s enjoying working in a pharmacy and hanging out in Queens.

“I like Queens mostly because of the diversity,” she said. “I could wake up at 3 a.m. and go get a bagel or Korean food,” she said of her Northern Boulevard neighborhood. “There are so many cultures, you meet people from all over the place – Arabs Europeans, Asians, Caribbean – I have a list of friends from different backgrounds.”

Soomyo is taking diversity to the next level, and learning Spanish, mostly due to her love for Colombian food in Jackson Heights. So if you see this Asian beauty walking down the street, be sure to say “Hola” for us.

Queens Doesn’t Count

Debbie Kolker disses Queens on Jeopardy

How dare she? And on national television!

We all know the game show Jeopardy – Alex Trebek stands up there at the podium, answers and questions in his hand, while three contestants (know-it-alls, call them what you will) stand there in hopes of coming out with the most money at the end of the game.

Everybody loves Jeopardy, right? And everybody loves Queens, right?

Wrong!

On a recent episode, some smarmy know-it-all from Brooklyn named Danielle gave her head a little wiggle as she worked her way through the “City Of The Day: New York City” category.

On the second-to-last question, the answer was “One of the best-preserved colonial buildings is the Onderdonk Farmhouse of 1731 in this borough, the largest.” Unsure, Ms. Smartypants didn’t buzz in; she left that to her fellow contestant, Bob, who chimed in with Brooklyn. Wrong! Then little miss know-it-all buzzed in, and here’s the play-by-play:

“What is the Bronx?”

“No, I’m sorry,” Alex said. “The correct answer is Queens.”

“Well we don’t count Queens.”

The moral of the story? The know-it-all who thought she was better than everybody else wasn’t. She lost. Go back to Brooklyn, and good riddance.

Crowley's Political Rock

From Crowley online video

Is there a political leader anywhere in the nation who can be seen rockin’ out on the internet?

Rumor says there may be one soon. Check out “you tube” at www.youtube.com /watch?v=eaFeq_vMhHAand see Queens Democratic chair heir apparent Joe Crowley at Buckin’ Buffalo Saloon in Buffalo during the Democratic State Convention this spring. The crooner, Congressman Crowley, is a longtime member of the “Budget Blues Busters.” QConf recalls him far back as the musical back-up group during the 40th Birthday roast of Congressman Gary Ackerman.

A Crowley staffer tells us, “It’s something he’s tried to keep up with. He’s very passionate about music, singing and playing.”

Sadly, new federal campaign finance laws may prevent Crowley from taking to the mic at the next Queens Democratic County Dinner to “sing for his supper.”

Trump-opoly

Queens kid, real estate mogul Donald Trump is about to add his Midas touch to a new project.

The yet to be named company is Big Daddy’s first attempt at project development in Hollywood, and will be run by season two “Apprentice” contestant, Andy Litinsky, Daily Variety reported.

Litinsky was fired on the second season of “Apprentice” but later hired by Trump.

“There are so many things being thrown at me, a lot of them based in LA, I just thought it would be appropriate,” Trump said.

Variety said the company’s likely first project would be a reality TV show of the board game Monopoly, which Trump and producer R.J. Cutler have been developing.

Desire Star Desires Gifts

Kelly Albanese

If the shoe doesn’t fit… well, you could still wear it, right? At least that seemed to be “Desire” star Kelly Albanese’s motto last Friday morning when the Good Day New York cameras flipped to off.

Albanese, who plays Cara Gamarra on the My Network soap and stand-in co-host for the morning news show, received a stack of shoeboxes from Sole Desire on Ditmars Boulevard in Astoria during an on-air special send-off. A shocked Albanese pulled a pair of baby blue wedges from one of the boxes and began gushing over them with Good Day anchor Jodi Applegate.

But backstage the thrill seemed to wear off. “They were a little big, but she said some might work,” an assistant who had been prepping the Los Angeles beauty for the week told QConf. “She got more gifts later and actually took all of them.”

Our Femme Fatale

Jackson Heights' Lucy Liu

From Jackson Heights to Bayonne, France (not New Jersey), Lucy Liu, star of “Charlie’s Angels,” “Ally McBeal” and “Kill Bill” is living it up. During the filming of a romantic comedy slated for release in 2007, Liu will split her time between the shops of Bayonne and New York City, where some of the shooting will take place.

Hanging out with her co-star Cillian Murphy, who starred in the 2005 horror flick “Red Eye,” Liu took in the view in Bayonne on July 25, according to The Jersey Journal. The Queens native will play a different character than usual this time – an unpredictable, adventurous “femme fatale” – in the upcoming film, “Watching the Detectives,” which is written and directed by Paul Soter.

On second thought, perhaps the role is not as much a stretch as we first thought. After all, she does have a knack for playing the mysterious, sexy gals. Okay, we’ll see it anyway.
