Gorgeous Gia

Gia Allemand
Home: Howard Beach
Age: 23
Height: 5’5"
Weight: 100 lbs
Stats: 34-23-34

For Howard Beach native Gia Allemand, modeling and pageantry have been her way of life ever since she was a baby.

“I started my modeling career as a baby in Johnson & Johnson ads and I was also a Gerber baby” the Gia recalled. “I just picked modeling back up three years ago, but I’ve always been in pageants.”

With titles such as Miss American Dream, Miss Italy and runner up in Miss Hawaiian tropic and Miss Red Hot Taj Mahal Superbowl, for Gia, pageantry is a full-time job.

After attending the Hartford Conservatory for her undergraduate education – yes, she’s a ballerina as well – Gia returned to NY and started pursuing her passions.

On a recent calendar shoot in the Bahamas, she accidentally arrived a day early and found herself at a foreign airport without a phone, hotel or transportation.

“I was scared. I had to do everything myself, but I did end up getting another job out of it,” she said.

When not traveling to model or compete, Gia mostly enjoys spending time at home, shopping, yoga, horseback riding, and swimming. “I like staying physically active,” she said. Currently she’s prepping to compete for Miss USA New York.

She also really likes living in Queens. “It’s easy to get everywhere. You don’t want to live in the city because then you can’t have a car. But Queens is close enough to the city where you can just drive in and park, and it also offers you a good piece of suburban life.”

Wacky Wang

Charles Wang and Garth Snow

Leave it to a Queens educated business mogul to boldly, though some say foolishly, undermine the traditional sports franchise model and create an unorthodox regime.

Former Queens resident and Queens College alumnus Charles Wang, founder of Computer Associates and owner of the New York Islanders, made plenty of jaws drop last week when he fired Stanley Cup-winning general manager Neil Smith and replaced him with the team’s backup goaltender Garth Snow. That’s right – the team’s backup goaltender.

Wang said that he fired Smith, who led the Rangers to their 1994 championship, because he wanted a coach who would take orders directly from the owner.

The questionable personnel move has made Wang the butt of many jokes in the sports world.

“Maybe somewhere down the road, the Isles’ mad chemist of an owner will get the last laugh,” said an ESPN magazine. “For now, though, the joke is still on him.”

“Someone hand Charles Wang a hockey stick so he can club himself over the head with it,” read a Canadian newspaper article.

Many critics have also been quick to remind everyone of Wang’s suggestion that team personnel go to Japan to scout sumo wrestlers as possible NHL goaltenders.

Can’t they just tell Wang the obvious: go fix Computer Associates not the Islanders.

She’s Got Curves

Selma Hayak (top) and America Ferrera team up in a Queens series.

Executive producer Salma Hayek knows what the American television viewers are going to like, or at least what the Queens viewers want to see.

The bombshell-turned producer is kicking off a series about a plain Jane from Queens who lands a job at a high fashion magazine, based on “Yo Soy Betty La Fea,” a popular Colombian telenovela.

“Usually telenovelas are a lot more melodramatic and this one was dramatic but had an amazing sense of humor,” said Hayek, who is convinced American audiences “are very thirsty for something like this.”

America Ferrera, the actress who plays the title character, can’t wait to take on the Queensite persona. The 22-year-old, Los Angeles-born actress, who starred in the Indie film “Real Women Have Curves,” said she’s thrilled to represent “a whole generation of young women who don’t recognize themselves in anything they’re watching. Whether it be magazines or TV or movies, they’re invisible. And to me, it’s an honor to take on this role, and I love, love, love being her.”

Natural Cool J

LL Cool J in shape

Rumors have been spreading that Queens rapper LL Cool J used steroids and cosmetic surgery to tighten up those rippling muscles.

The 38-year-old insisted that he worked very hard to achieve his physique.

“There are so many people speculating over what they think that I am doing. Is he doing steroids? Did he get plastic surgery?” Cool J said he made the sacrifices his rumormongers refuse to make.

“They are not willing to make the sacrifices necessary, and go through the pain necessary, in order to get in the best shape they can possibly be,” he told Daily Dish. “So they don’t believe I would be willing to do it either. So it is really more about their weakness, and less about mine. The reality is that I really do go into the gym, and I didn’t have surgery, and I didn’t do steroids.”

LL says he works very hard and sticks to his diet regime.

Final Fu

Jamaica's Daniel Sterling

Daniel Sterling of Jamaica has kicked, chopped and punched his way all the way to the small screen.

Sterling is one of 30 contestants of various martial arts backgrounds who will be competing on MTV’s new reality series, Final Fu.

Sterling, self-taught by watching the Power Rangers and kung-fu movies from the age of 7, never received any formal training until he was 15 years old.

Here’s hoping it's a Queens guy who becomes the “Final Fu.”

'My Boogers Itch'

A billboard on the Boulevard

Northbound motorists along Queens Boulevard might have been cruising along only to lift their eyes and see this mysterious billboard in recent weeks. The big red sign reads “My boogers itch,” with no other writing or symbols on it.

QConf did a little bit of investigative work and found that there are similar tasteless billboard ads around the country with other signs that say “I’m a hot toe picker” and “I pooted.” The ad campaign is a promo for Cartoon Network, and the idiotic slogans are quotes from various shows.

Don’t worry. We don’t get it either. And it certainly doesn’t make us want to watch the show.
