Go Giantsgirl.com

Reby Sky has graced the pages of QConfidential in the past, but given her current high profile as the hottest Giants fan in the country – in our opinion at least – we figured we’d give her a new look as her boys in blue head to the playoffs.

Reby started NYGiantsGirl.com a few years ago just as a fan site, and it has grown to get considerable attention. Her in-stadium antics and skimpy dress have even landed her on the cover of a major New York daily as well as in the pages of Sports Illustrated.

The site has been “pretty good,” Reby said in a phone call from Tampa last week. “It has been all over the place, and getting great fan response. It’s cool to be part of this whole… I’m not sure I want to say the word… dynasty. Two years ago if you said that word you would get a strange look, but things are looking good.”

Reby is now working as a sports commentator on a Tampa radio station, which she says is great because her ultimate goal is to be in sports broadcasting. While in Tampa, she is involved with the Tampa Breeze, part of the Lingerie Football League, where models and actresses play full contact tackle football.

The championship game is held during halftime at the Super Bowl. Which, of course, is a conundrum for the striking beauty.

“If the Giants go to the Super Bowl, and if my team wins our championship, my team may be left without a quarterback,” she joked.

Splitting her time between Tampa and Queens can wear a girl out, but Reby was excited to see the Giants get a bye week headed into the playoffs.

“Football season is good; I’m in Queens for two days and then back in Tampa again. The Giants have a bye week – thank God. I can just stay here and focus.”

Weiner Award

Prominent public transportation Website Streetsblog released its list of annual Streetsies awards, a combination of best and worst straphanger developments and characters of 2008.

Well, Queens Congressman Anthony Weiner earned the dubious distinction of winning the “Most Opinions Fewest Solutions Award.” The blog went so far as to say, “From now on, this will be called the Anthony Weiner Award.”

The Queens Congressman is a frequent target of the blog’s ire, which claims his constant press conferences offer many straphanger complaints but very few solutions.

Other notable Queens honorees include Transportation Alternatives’ Queens Committee Chair Mike Heffron, who was named “Activist of the Year.”

No Apples

Herman and Roma Rosenblat

Herman and Roma Rosenblat, who lived for decades in Queens and now reside in Florida, gained national attention when they told the story of how they met in a German Concentration Camp in World War II.

Herman was a 12-year-old boy who would stand by the fence, and Roma was a local 8-year-old girl who would sneak the boy apples through the barbed wire. The two met again after liberation, moved to the United States and were married.

Well, it turns out that only part of that story is true, and it has news outlets and even Oprah Winfrey blushing in embarrassment.

As recently as last month, when Herman Rosenblat was bar mitzvahed at a temple in Mineola, his story was holding up. A book was written about his youthful encounters, and a major film studio picked up the rights and is moving forward with the project. Oprah called the story the best love story she has ever heard.

And now it turns out to be a lie. The two met after the war, and moved to the U.S. together, but there were no apples shared through the fence.

But media outlets who reported their story and have traded in the apples through the fence for egg on their faces.

Queens In Smithsonian

The Smithsonian American Art Museum is now exhibiting a retrospective of the work of photographer Frank Gohlke, including a 2003 photo series documenting life right here in Queens.

“Accommodating Nature: The Photographs of Frank Gohlke” will be on view through March 3, 2009.

“Fascinated with nature’s proclivities for growth, destruction, and unexpected change, Gohlke captures the tension between humanity and nature and explores how Americans build their lives in a natural world that rarely fits within a traditional pastoral ideal,” the exhibition statement said.

“Where We Live,” a 2003 photo series included in the retrospective, featured photos of homes around the borough, including Jackson Heights, Jamaica, Woodside and Flushing.

“Queens is both a destination and a way station, where ethnic diversity first undergoes the turbulent process of Americanization,” according to a statement from the Howard Greenberg Gallery. “What interests Gohlke in this borough are the visible traces of this process in the urban/suburban landscape. His hunch is that every step in this complex transformation can be observed somewhere in Queens if one knows where to look.”

That’s A Rap

After only six episodes, rap artist 50 Cent’s MTV show, “50 Cent: The Money and the Power,” is getting the axe.

Fifty, a rapper and actor from Jamaica, whose two albums “Get Rich or Die Tryin’” and “The Massacre” have sold over 21 million copies combined, is also a successful businessman who has launched a clothing line, partnered with Vitamin Water and Reebok and released video games based on his lifestyle. His reality show, which promised to deliver the nation’s next great hip-hop mogul, fell behind in the ratings due to a lack of interest.

Though Fifty’s show flopped, MTV Entertainment President Brian Graden expressed the network’s desire to keep the reality shows coming – and will be unveiling 16 new unscripted shows within the next five months, according to Variety.

“Our new shows will feature themes of affirmation and accomplishment,” Graden said. “Our shows are going to focus less on loud and silly hooks and more on young people proving themselves. These are themes that are consistent with the Obama generation.”

Queens Gals On Top

Alicia Keys

Alicia Keys closed out 2008 like she’s done ever since coming on the music scene – on top.

At the 2008 World Music Awards, which aired in December, the Queens Beauty beat out Rihanna, Leona Lewis and top diva Mariah Carey in the World’s Top R and B artist category.

Alicia wasn’t all Queens had to offer. The borough made another showing on the world’s stage.

Even with the turmoil that enveloped the Material Girl’s year with her divorce and MadRod scandal, Madonna also took home honors from the World Music Award. The one time Corona resident took home the award for America’s Best Selling Artist.

Sort of a Queens of Queens moment.
