From The Military To A Model Mom's Life
|
|
For the past nine years, the military has dominated Lila Cruz’s life. Having put in her time in Korea, Iraq and Kuwait, Lila is glad to be home – especially with her little girl who will soon turn 2.
So what’s a girl fresh out of the military to do while going to college to complete her degree in graphic design?
Model, of course.
“I just started this past year,” she said. “I’ve been doing it for about five months.”
Most of her work has been dedicated to building her portfolio, but this Francis Lewis High School grad with a toddler is interested in design and fashion as well.
When not studying or changing diapers, Lila loves to get out with her daughter – she’s not much for clubs.
“I like movies, reading, just spending time with my family,” she said. “I have a lot of sisters, brothers and my other friends that have kids. We keep it pretty low key, though I do go to a lounge occasionally.”
The modeling has been fun though, and Lila enjoys the networking, building relationships with photographers and getting her face out there.
“Now I’m ready to put myself out there and get some work,” she said.

| Rock That Bid
|
| Now if she can only get some cheap gas at an auction…
|
Want a new hybrid car but don’t have the money to sink into the purchase? Maybe you should have tried Rockybid.com. The budding online auction site sold a 2010 Honda Insight Hybrid from Paragon Honda in Woodside for $1.24. That’s not a typo – one dollar and twenty-four cents.
The auction was won by Jane Megginson of Lancaster, Pa., who runs a handful of Quaker camps in Maryland and will use the car to commute between the camps.
“I saw they were going to auction off the car, so I went over there [rockybid.com], made a lot of bids and I won,” Megginson said. “It’s really exciting. The time is ticking down and all of a sudden it says it’s ended, and your name is sitting there and you won a car. I mean, it’s crazy.”

Indiana, Maine, Flushing
|
| A 20 foot high inviting sign from the '64 World's Fair.
|
Innovative sculptor Robert Indiana of Maine will be the center of attention in his home state, displaying a handful of his works during an exhibition at the Farnsworth Museum that will coincide with the Maine in America Summer Gala Saturday, June 27, in Vinalhaven, Me.
The exhibit will include a work that was popular 45 years ago in a location far, far away – Flushing, Queens.
Though time and 400 miles may take its toll on the popular “EAT” sculpture from the 1964-65 World’s Fair, it is sure to be as popular in Maine as it was for the fair-goers here in Queens.
The five-disc structure is 20 feet high and features the letter “E,” “A” and “T,” lit up in swirling lights six feet high.
Been a while since you saw the sculpture in person? According to Google maps, it’s only a 7 hour, 48 minute journey from Flushing to the new site. More info at farnsworthmuseum.org.

Malled!
|
| The real one!
|
A press release from 20th Council district candidate John Choe giving the address of the “Queens Center Mall” as 135-13 Roosevelt Avenue stirred up a few chuckles at QConf.
Well the egg is on our collective face.
Choe did not mean the near-iconic structure at the corner of Queens and Woodhaven Boulevards. He has set up shop in the lobby of the Sheraton Hotel in Flushing, which features a mini collection of boutiques that also happens to be called the Queens Center Mall.
We suggest Choe just leave out the “Queens Center Mall” bit, or too many of his supporters (and reporters) may end up at a Food Court wondering where he is while munching on Sbarro pizzas.

Ship Ahoy!

| The "Queens," (left) one of Circle Lines' newest, leaves its shipyard in Somerset, Mass.
|
Our borough finally has a ship to call its own.
The Circle Line will host a special party Saturday, June 20, to christen the newest two additions to its fleet – the Queens and the Brooklyn – at the home of World Yacht, at Pier 81, at the end of West 41st Street and the Hudson River.
Carnival Day, as it is being called, will be open to the public, where for just $1 people can check out the new ships, enjoy a day of entertainment, feast on a barbecue and take free cruises to the Statue of Liberty.
The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 pm., and is open to all. To learn more, go to circleline.com.

Gruesome Find
A city marshal made a grisly discovery when he tried to tow a 2000 Chevrolet Ventura that was parked on 34th Avenue under the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway last Thursday. Inside the car was the far decomposed body of 59-year-old George Morales, who, according to his daughter Jennifer Morales, was a handyman from Washington Heights.
Jennifer Morales was shocked the body had gone unnoticed for several weeks after he died from a possible heart attack. The car was covered with dust and parking tickets and Jennifer Morales told the Daily News “I don’t understand how no one noticed him. They just gave him tickets.”
