Eastern Bloc Bombshell

Home: Elmhurst
Age: 25
Height: 5’ 9"
Weight: 100 lbs.
Stats: 34-23-34

This tall, dark-haired beauty was born in Bulgaria, but moved to the States in 1997. When she isn’t on the catwalk in Manhattan, she shakes up the her neighborhood streets in Elmhurst.

“When I was 12 or 13, my mother took me to a fashion show in Bulgaria,” Nadia says of her entry into modeling. “It was a very small show, and some men from a Bulgarian modeling agency saw me, pulled me out of the crowd, and signed me up.”

The rest is history. Nadya made a name for herself in Bulgarian advertisements and commercials, and even took the Miss Bulgaria title in 1995. Most of the work she’s done has been in Europe, but she hopes to win over America the same way she won over the old country.

“The modeling business in the U.S. is more stressful, but it’s more interesting, too,” she says. “I love it here. There are huge opportunities if you work hard; I’ve done everything from jewelry modeling to high-fashion catwalks.”
Of course, it hasn’t always gone, ahem, smoothly. Like the time Nadya’s dress came undone right in the middle of the runway.

“It wasn’t fixed right!” She laughs. “Something came off, and I stepped on it, and there I was half-naked in front of everyone.”

When she’s not in the spotlight, Nadya hits the books as an interior design major. She hopes to start an interior design business one day. She keeps herself fit training for competitions in her favorite martial art, Taekwondo. She’s working on her second-level brown belt-and has won 13 gold medals.

In her spare time, Nadya does some quality hanging out on Continental Avenue.

“I like it here [in Queens],” she says. “It’s quiet. It’s less expensive. I’m right near the subway. It’s a great place.”

Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner

Maria Prosa asks Rev Al to dinner

Though the Rev. Al Sharpton has caused quite a stir in the Howard Beach area, some residents have taken a step to show that their community welcomes all races.

Writing out her address on a piece of paper for the rotund Reverend, Howard Beach native Maria Prosa invited him to dinner at her house when Sharpton was in the area last Friday.

Sharpton shook Prosa’s hand, thanked her for the dinner invite, and joked, “I’m on a diet.”

And it’s true. Sharpton has frequently been seen nibbling on salads and other non-fat meals in an effort to keep the weight off. Some do Weight Watchers, some do Atkins. But for Sharpton, it started with a 90-day prison sentence for a nonviolent protest against military bombing in Vieques, Puerto Rico. By going on a liquids-only diet throughout his prison time, Sharpton brought a great amount of media attention to his cause in Puerto Rico.

While taking big bites out of racism and eating up the publicity, Sharpton holds off anything that might push his belly out any farther.

Caruso Seeks Immenseness

Elton John, David Caruso

British media is reporting that David Caruso, Forest Hills native and ''CSI" star, has been chomping down carbohydrates to gain more than 60 pounds in order to resemble famed singer Elton John in an upcoming movie about the pop star’s life.

“We’re thrilled to have such a brilliant performer portray Sir Elton,” David Furnish, the veteran songwriter’s long-time partner, told an English newspaper. “We’re almost certain he’ll do a great job in capturing Sir Elton’s immenseness.”

The film will explore some touchy aspects of John’s life, including a fistfight he had with fellow singer George Michael, who reportedly plays himself in the movie version. In fact, the movie has been held up in production for more than two years pending approval from John himself.

For more than nine months, Caruso has been eating hefty bowls of pasta and bread to add the needed weight.

Let’s just hope Caruso can take off the pounds, otherwise "CSI" could take on a different meaning: Can’t Squeeze Inside (pants, doors, etc.).

Who's Who?

Tony Bennett, Wynton Marsalis and Mario Cuomo applaud the grads at Long Island City's Sinatra High School graduation. With a 90% graduation rate and 100% of graduates going on to college with $2.5 million in scholarships, they had some thing to cheer about at this little High School in Queens.

Teacher Plays Hooky

Mathew Kaye, aka Matt Striker

Plenty of angry Queensites had former Benjamin Cardozo High School social studies teacher Matthew Kaye on the ropes last week-but it was a position he’d been in before.

Kaye, also known as wrestler Matt Striker, took 11 days of sick leave from the school in December and February to pursue a clandestine professional wrestling career.
Unfortunately for him, it wasn’t quite clandestine enough; school administrators discovered that Kaye’s Web site listed him as being on tour for World Wrestling Entertainment during those days.

“I was and still am a good teacher,” said Kaye, who offered to repay the money he earned while on leave, and claimed his lapse in honesty came from confusion between sick days and personal days. “The bottom line was the kids.”

Kaye has resigned from his position at the school. Parents, students and other teachers have come to his defense in the matter, he said.

“Was it fraud? Yes,” he admitted. “Am I sorry? You have no idea how sorry I am.”

Vallone Gets Punked

The homepage of www.animalnewyork.com

Animal, an online counterculture zine devoted to art, graffiti and well, stuff you won't find at the Queens Museum, chose City Council Public Safety Chair and prosecutor at heart, Peter Vallone, Jr., as their "Punk" poster boy.

When "Time Magazine" decided to pay graffiti artist Cope 2 (Fernando Carlo, 38), who has a rap sheet going back to 1985 for numerous vandalism busts, $20,000 to "tag up" or spray paint a SoHo billboard for them, Vallone went after the venerable mag and not so venerable street artist.

"Time magazine should have spent its money rewarding legitimate artists, not some punk whose been defacing our city,” Vallone told the Daily News.

Now Animal has put Vallone's name and the Daily News account of his criticism as the intro page on their webzine.

Animalnewyork.com calls Vallone "the punk" and offers the Daily News link where Vallone calls Cope2 a punk. Inside the "Animal" site, take a trip to places perhaps Vallone (as well as many others) only visit when no one is watching.

But it doesn't stop there, fans of Cope2 are threatening to paint the city with a new tag: "Vallone."

“They called our office yesterday and said they were going to be tagging Peter’s name throughout the city,” wrote Vallone’s spokesperson on a www.slantpoint.com, a conservative blog.

Whether or not Vallone’s name is spray painted on walls, it will be popping up soon, some on the site said. “[C]ome election season, you will see political graffiti all over the city and I don’t mean by graffiti artists. It will be in the forms of posters, banners, and all the other crap you guys put up.”
