Don't Dis This Diva!

Julia Fragias
Home: East Elmhurst
Age: 27
Height: 5’ 7"
Weight: 140 lbs
Stats: 34-28-38

Julia, who has been a model for about 10 years, heads up an electronica band called Deaf By Stereo (www.deafbystereo.com). Though music was not always in her future.

“As a little girl I was raised on a lot of traditional Greek music,” she said. “It was the only way I could sing and be allowed to sing. My folks were not into their little girl being a songstress.”

“My cousins were all into The Cure and punk and all sorts of genres, and they said, ‘come here little girl,’ and it was all over from then. I’ve always since had this dual persona with my music. That was my childhood until I got to grade school, when I started singing Madonna – on stage in the church school."

Though making a full-time living in music is Julia’s ultimate goal, she still has to pay the bills. "I’m working in an office, I model, I do make up – all sorts of freelance work to pay for studio time."

Julia got into modeling around the latter part of her high school career for her sister and friends in art classes.
From there, Julia started art modeling at Fashion Institute and for artists at their homes, until the middle of college when, for a brief period, she started getting into what she described as “more primitive forms of modeling – like creating drama in an image. It is another way of expressing my personality. It’s really cathartic for me.”

Julia went to Cardozo High, lived in Flushing and still has friends all over Queens. When she’s “feeling nostalgic” she will go out to a Bell Boulevard bar for a drink with some friends.

“I also like to go to the area where Kaufman Astoria is because its chockfull of cafes and art studios – there are more of the kids going in there,” she said. “Now if I want to go to a poetry reading or a cool studio I can stay in Queens.

Julia just shot a movie where she played a legendary adult film performer who became washed up and crazed. “Tales of Times Square” has been submitted to Sundance. “I’m really excited about that,” Julia said.

With an album set to come out in April, a band playing gigs throughout the city, a film that may show at Sundance and freelance modeling work, Julia is on the verge of seeing her dreams come true.

Beautiful Music?

Queens architect, AIA Pres William Gati and urban planner Paul Graziano

One thing’s for sure, you won’t find these two performing together anytime soon.

Although both are aspiring musicians, Queens American Institute of Architects’ President William Gati (left) and urban planner Paul Graziano (right) are at complete opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to their views of the borough’s landscape.

In fact, both are quite open to denouncing each another’s qualifications and points of view on the topic of zoning, as Graziano’s R2A zoning law has been sweeping through the borough, while Gati has been doing everything in his power to put an end to it.

Put these two in a room together and the music you’ll hear might not be suitable for children.

However, Graziano is a member of the acoustic group, Sheraton Commander and Gati has three independently produced classical jazz albums.

A truce is doubtful, but it could be at least music to our ears to hear these two try their talents together instead of the usual cacophony.

Give Her The Bird

Queens Deputy Parks Commissioner Estelle Cooper got a bit of a fright last week as she stood a bit too close for comfort to a Peregrine falcon about to be released into the wild by the Dept. of Environmental Protection, which had helped nurse the wounded bird back to health. Don Marshall, husband of Queens Beep Helen, safely positions himself behind Cooper.

Carmine On Stage

The Trib's "Hard Nosed Carmine"

During the day, he may simply lumber through the QConf office, handling maintenance duties and taking out the trash, but by night, he transforms into a television star.

At the first ever out-of-studio performance of QPTV’s “The Filthy Rich Show” at Munch’s Cafe last week in Forest Hills, Trib maintenance man Carmine, under the guise of his alter-ego “Hard Nosed Carmine,” was summoned to the mic to relay some of his very own poetry.

To the dismay of the crowd, however, it seemed that “Hard Nosed” got a case of onstage jitters. He tried to explain to the restless audience that he didn’t have any of his poetry on hand to read, but when the show’s host Filthy Rich and his wily cast of characters tried to goad Carmine into joining them in a tap dancing skit instead, the burly, black-haired one refused.

“I’ve got tons of material that I could do, but I don’t want to because its Rich’s show and he’s the star,” he later explained.

Filthy Rich thanked Carmine for booking the Munch’s Cafe show, though it was in his usual sarcastic way. “If you’re going to blame anyone for this, blame him.”
