Dancing Fashionista
|
|
Name: Diana Cano Home: Astoria Age: 19 Height: 5’7 Weight: 125 Stats: 36-28-36
Diana Cano grew up in Astoria and has been modeling since she was 15 years old.
She said she caught her first big break when she was modeling for magazines and clothing lines in Ecuador.
Diana loves the fun and adventure of working in fashion shows in SoHo, and is willing to model for any designer, whether it is for shoes or clothes. “It doesn’t matter,” she said. “I love it all.”
Diana was attracted to the business of modeling because “I really like fashion shows and clothes.” Although she does see modeling as a full time job, she is looking toward the future. Looks, after all, don’t last forever.
“My real goal is to be the owner of my own clothing store, and be a big designer,” she said.
When not posing for the camera, Diana spends her time working in the long-distance communications division of DigitGlobal Communications, and will soon shift to the company’s International Business.
When she is not working, Diana spends her time going about town – to the movies, the park to play baseball, and to the track.
“I love the Belmont horse races,” she said. That – and dancing. “I’ll dance to anything – hip-hop, Salsa, and merengue.”

| Art Garfunkel
|
Art Garfunkel, the quieter half of Simon & Garfunkel, the popular 60s and 70s folk rock duo from Kew Gardens Hills, must have been feeling groovy when he breezed past a stop sign in Woodstock, N.Y. recently. A cop pulled him over and noticed a strong smell coming from inside the vehicle.
Upon inspection the officer found remnants of a marijuana cigarette. Garfunkel was issued a ticket and is due back in Woodstock Sept. 22 to face possession charges. Garfunkel pleaded guilty last year to possession of marijuana, and paid a $200 fine.

Stick To Zoning
|
| Paul Graziano without guitar and long hair
|
Taking his guitar talents to the stage, urban planning consultant Paul Graziano played a live gig at One Eyed Jack’s in Whitestone recently, only the crowd’s reaction to his set was a little harsher than he would have liked. Graziano has been the driving force behind the rezoning of much of Queens, having worked to create a good portion of the borough’s new zoning maps.
Originally slated to go on at 9 p.m., Graziano and his two-piece acoustic band, Sheraton Commander, didn’t hit the stage until 11:15 p.m.
Finally, when Graziano came on at the small musical venue, things went a little rocky. While setting up and testing their equipment, one impatient fan screamed out “Just Play!” That set the table for what was hardly the ideal atmosphere for Graziano’s mellow acoustic tunes.
The set experienced a few technical difficulties and rowdy fan reaction. There was an excessive amount of feedback from the speakers, and another fan hopped onto the stage and screamed profanities.
The gig at One Eyed Jack’s was not the first time that Graziano’s music has caused a commotion. Several years back, his rock band headlined a night of music at the Bohemian Beer Hall in Astoria, and the night ended in fistfights and broken furniture. Graziano referred to the night as a “drunken brawl.”
Let’s just stick to maps for now, okay?

The Summertime Blues?
|
| Queens Village's Matt Bernet & Playboy Playmate Courtney Culkin.
|
As summer comes to an end, so do the many weekends that Queens’ 20- and 30-somethings spend in the Hamptons.
Like in years past, alumni of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity brothers from St. John’s University had a heck of a time on Saturday afternoons at Neptune’s Beach Club. One of this year’s highlights occurred Aug. 27, when April 2005 Playboy Playmate of the Month Courtney Culkin posed for a picture with Queens Village native Matt Bernet.
Other than a brief conversation and the photo, it might be as close as he’ll ever come to one of Hugh Hefner’s hotties. But he will remember this one.
Courtney did tell QConf that her stay at Hefner’s mansion is all that it is hyped up to be, with free clothes and a place to sleep any day or night.

The Trib's Own Space Cadet

|
A couple of Queens kids broke bread together last week. Former Trib Managing Editor Angela Montefinise -- we taught her the trade -- was interviewing another Queens native, recently returned space traveller astronaut Charles Camarda. He was in town from his new home in Houston with his wife Melinda Miller doing what those folks do after a triumphant return from the great beyond. In addition to press and tv appearences, the Carmadas had one more "New York thing" they had to do -- and Charlie invited fellow Queensite Montifinise along for the ride . . um flight.
Montefinise tells QConf: "He kept saying over and over again that he needed to have a Sabrett hot dog because 'you can’t get a good hot dog in Houston.' His wife Melinda Miller agreed, and said Camarda’s dad often ships packages of Sabrett's to them in Houston."
So the three, like true natives, ate their dogs on the streets of the Big Apple before the astronaut from South Ozone Park went back to Queens to throw out the first pitch at Shea and hit the U.S. Open to see and be be seen.

No Luck For INXS Wannabe
|
| Queens' Neal Carlson eliminated
|
Well, it didn’t take long for Queens native Neal Carlson to be eliminated from Rock Star INXS, the CBS show currently airing Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
Carlson, the 29 year-old musician/administrative coordinator, was eliminated just two weeks into the show’s broadcast.
Hosted by Playboy Playmate Brooke Burke, Rock Star INXS allows both viewers and band members of the Australian rock group INXS to pick who will record an album and go on an upcoming world tour.
Described as a psychedelic rocker with a love for classic rock, Carlson’s image was apparently not what the Australian band was looking for as they try to make their comeback, after being a smash hit in the 1980’s until they lost their lead singer to an apparent suicide.
Maybe Carlson should forget Australia and try another similar show, where instead of INXS, he can become an American Idol.
