College Cutie

Carolina Perafan
East Elmhurst
Age: 24
Height: 5’8"
Weight 110 lbs.
Stats: 34-24-33

With her angelic face and gorgeous looks, this bright eyed Colombian beauty is a newcomer to the modeling business
Carolina got into the modeling business after her friend recommended her to Star Casting (modeling agency) and they decided to use her photos on their Web site. She knows in order to pursue this as a career some luck is needed. Carolina is simply looking for a break.

Carolina is currently a student at LaGuardia Community College and admits to being a realist when it comes to her expectations about the modeling industry. She knows that becoming a success will take time. “I’m not expecting anything big right now,” said Carolina. “I know it takes time and I need experience to start.”

“When I’m not modeling, I’m in school. I enjoy my college life. I answer my e-mails and respond to my fans,” admits Carolina. “I enjoy Queens because it has different cultures. It’s not like the Bronx or any of those areas.
It’s calm and not ghetto. I like that.”

College and good friends both seem very important to Carolina. She admits to being an easy going good hearted individual who likes to keep things simple and believes college helps her with that.

“I like LaGuardia; it gives me the knowledge to learn. You meet good people,” said Carolina.

When not in school or trying to land her next modeling job, Carolina loves going clubbing, the outdoors, camping, playing sports, playing pool and working out at the gym. In fact her one of her biggest thrills comes when she goes bowling. “I like bowling,” said Carolina. “But I like winning the most though.”

Irish Boxer

Far Rock's John Duddy

At a small but highly productive gym in Far Rockaway, an Irish gem is gearing up for one his biggest fights yet.

John Duddy, originally from Derry, Ireland and now living in Queens has been taping up his wrists and giving it all he’s got the past few weeks at practice for his June 10 Madison Square Garden bout against Freddie Cuevas.

The under card fight will be the Queens boy’s first defense of his WBC Continental Americas middleweight title, since he’s racked up 14 knockouts among his 16 wins in his unbeaten record.

“He’s moving up to ‘A’ level fighters soon,” Irish Ropes founder Eddie McLoughlin said, “and a lot of big things will be coming down the pike. You have to make things legal. Hopefully in two years time, he’ll be king of the world.”

Model Hopping

Naima Mora, Russell Simmons

Hollis born Hip-Hop mogul Russell Simmons definitely has a thing for models.

The estranged husband of former model and Baby Phat owner Kimora Lee Simmons was dating 23-year-old model Denise Vasi.
It is not clear whether that romance is still on as Simmons was holed up with “America’s Next Top Model” winner Naima Mora at the fourth anniversary party of Complex magazine.

According to All Headline News, Simmons quickly hooked up with the Top Model winner and the two spent the rest of the evening huddled in a corner.

Final Rest

In the “You Can’t Make This Stuff Up” Department, a 76-year-old woman was run over and killed by her own car while visiting her husband’s grave in Maple Grove Cemetery on Sunday, April 30.

The 76 year-old Evanglista Vartholomeou left her engine running and was 50 feet from her husband's grave when she was run over by her very own car, a 1991 Lincoln Continental?

Maple Grove Cemetery was opened in 1875 and is said to be at one of the highest elevations in Queens. So not only did Evanglista pass away in a place as appropriate as a cemetery, but she is also that much closer to heaven.

Maybe its God’s way of saying that sometimes in life, you have to remember to put on the brakes.

Our condolences go out to Evanglista’s family.

Paul Simon Is What?

Time mag's special: 100 People Who Shaped Our World, Kew Gardens Hills' Paul Simon, one of those people

We’ve been Paul Simon fans from the beginning – the very beginning. We at the Trib grew up with him, went to school with him and followed his career from his first recording with Art Garfunkel in Forest Hills High School as Tom and Jerry to this week’s release of his latest album, “Surprise.”

But come on, according to Time Magazine, the once venerable newsweekly, Simon is one of the “100 People Who Shaped Our World.”

Their piece on the Queens kid whose music fills our shelves and iPod begins: “It has been 49 years since Paul Simon sat in his childhood bedroom in Queens in New York City and wrote his first hit song, Hey, Schoolgirl. A half-century is a fair chunk of time, and Simon, 64, has packed it with all sorts of creative meandering. There was Simon and Garfunkel—merely the greatest folk duo of all time . . .”
Now, let’s see, Time mag’s 100 — there’s Bill and Melinda Gates, Condolezza Rice, Howard Stern, Angelina Jolie, both Clintons, both daddy and Pres George Bush, Muqtada al-Sadr, Oprah Winfrey and . . . Paul Simon!

Is he better and more important than we ever imagined or is Time mag just another victim of celebrity pop culture?

Hard Hitting Question

There are press conferences, and there are real press conferences. Guess which one happens when Sen. Hilary Clinton comes to town.

Clinton recently came to Queens to berate the Republicans about letting gas prices soar while they scratch the backs of big oil executives. It seemed like everyone with a camera, recorder or piece of paper was there to see what the senator had to say.

Even Inside Edition, the TV gossip magazine, came to ask a question – though it wasn’t exactly on topic.

As Clinton finished up with the regular press, and turned to walk away, an Inside Edition reporter stuck out her microphone and cried, “Senator! Senator! The most pressing question of the day: What do you think of Rosie O’Donnell joining The View?”

Clinton looked befuddled, a little taken aback, and responded, “ I didn’t know.” One can’t blame her, it had only been leaked to the press hours before.

Undeterred, the reporter asked, “Well, what do you think?”
Clinton mustered the token response, “I love Rosie,” and walked away.

The reporter immediately turned to her cameraman. “Did you get it? Did you get it?” she snapped.

Ah, it's moments like this that make us are proud to be part of the press.
