With girlish, cheeky features and a very sweet demeanor, 18-year-old Ragita of Laurelton is an easy subject for photographers to capture through their lenses.
Fairly new to the modeling world, Ragita already has a good foundation. She recently took part in a photo shoot for next year’s Jet Magazine calendar, and is featured on Onemodelplace.com and Black Cartel Modeling.
“I’ve enjoyed all of it because I’m very open-minded,” Ragita said of her modeling experiences. “It’s just about having fun in front of the camera and being comfortable with the photographer.”
Through the popular and ever growing media outlet, Myspace.com, Ragita was able to make a good number of connections and jumpstart her modeling career.
Ragita said she would like to possibly uptake modeling as a full time job one day, but now her focus is on her schoolwork. A student at Queens College, she is majoring in Elementary Education and minoring in Women’s Studies.
“The campus is big and there’s a lot of good vibes,” Ragita said of Queens College.
When she has time to get away from the books, Ragita likes to go shopping at Queens Center Mall with her four best friends and said she really enjoys the mall’s Cinnabon. Ragita has a passion for writing and frequently dabbles in poetry and story writing. She likes to go to Club DNA in Astoria.
“I’m young, so I mean, you gotta have fun,” she said.

| Early Ackerman
It was 1966.
A young, but energetic Gary Ackerman was trying to make his way into the Queens political scene and all that was standing in his way, at the time, was a seasoned Democrat with four years of experience as District Leader.
Terry Mancini, who died June 7, was approached by Ackerman at her Holly Avenue residence one morning when he made the pledge to run for office as Flushing’s co-leader.
According to Mancini’s husband Joseph, Ackerman showed up, dressed to the nines with his signature flowered lapel, and made his pledge.
Terry allegedly replied with, “You’re too wet behind the ears,” and turned down the future Queens Tribune founder and Congressman.
As the saying goes, “Good things come to those who wait.”

Queens Disney Links
|
| John Leguizamo & Marcos Siega
|
Move over Minnie and Mickey, move over Aladdin. The Disney Company is going Latino… and Queens.
A pair of Queensites has signed on to participate in an upcoming family comedy being put out by the company known for mice, ducks and dogs. Funny man John Leguizamo of Jackson Heights will star in Disney’s “Something Blue,” while fellow local Marcos Siega will serve as one of the producers of the film that centers around a father who becomes irritated when his daughter gets engaged to a young police officer.
It has been reported that the 42-year-old Leguizamo will play the role of the father, taking out his frustrations on “That 70’s Show” trouble maker Wilmer Valderrama, who will play the police officer. With a wide-eyed, younger audience now settling in on Leguizamo, the “Sexaholic” might have to tune down his excited Chihuahua brand of humor.
Siega, a veteran music director who has worked with rock bands including Blink 182 and 311, may also have to tune it down. Well known for filming the members of Blink 182 running naked for their “What’s My Age Again” video, a few things might have to change when Siega exchanges skin and sin for Cinderella.

'86 Mets
|
| The Mets commemorative quarters will be available at Dunkin’ Donuts stores from June 19 to July 9.
|
The Mets managed to do something on the road this month that no other team had ever done. In their 10-game road trip, they went 9-1, winning their last eight games in a row. More importantly, they scored in the first inning of each of those eight games, breaking a road record held by those cross-town rival New York Yankees since 1939.
As of their return home, they enjoyed a 9-1/2 game lead in the division and an astounding 13-1/2 game lead over the once-mighty Atlanta Braves. Upon their return to New York, several former Mets gathered at a Dunkin Donuts in Queens to unveil a series of 20th Anniversary quarters with color images of the World Champion 1986 Mets emblazoned on each.
Could this be the year they go back and win it? They still have half a season to play, but QConf is starting to feel confident in our boys from Flushing.

Holy Rodents!
|
| Did Chuck E. Cheese say "rats" to the mouse droppings found?
|
City health inspectors snapped the trap a Queens Chuck E. Cheese restaurant last week, after they found mouse-droppings at the location just off Northern Boulevard in Long Island City.
Insiders said the inspectors were absolutely horrified when they spotted “numerous droppings - obviously left behind by relatives” of the chain’s namesake rodent in kitchen areas at the eateries.
Inspectors credited operators of the Long Island City restaurant for “acting quickly and effectively” to resolve the condition, the sources said.
The chain’s big cheese had no statement on the situation.

Czech Please!
The United States’ embarrassing 3-0 loss to the Czech Republic in the World Cup last week caused slumped shoulders and downcast eyes all over the city. At a watering hole near City Hall, the patrons sat in stunned silence as team USA went down 1-0 in the first five minutes of play. Political types know a lost cause when they see one.
But there was at least one place where the game was cause for rejoicing. At the popular Astoria haunt The Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden, built nearly a century ago by Eastern European immigrants, many Czech fans gulped pints happily, draped in the team’s colors, as they watched their countrymen whoop on the American side.
The Czech fans were all smiles as they exited the bar at around 2:30 p.m. – darn that time change – and headed to their cars. “I’ve got to head back to work,” one man said in a heavy accent. “The fun’s over.”

Bible Lyte
|
| Queens' MC Lyte
|
Queens born rapper and actress MC Lyte has been added to the list of celebrities who will lend their voices to a dramatized audio recording of the Bible’s entire New Testament.
The project is the brainchild of Zondervan and Inspired By Media Group and is titled “Inspired By: The Bible Experience.” Sound effects and an original musical score will accompany the dramatization.
More than 80 African American stars have signed on to provide narration including Angela Bassett, Denzel Washington, Blair Underwood and Cuba Gooding Jr.
“With the recent resurgence of faith-based entertainment and its appeal to both urban and mainstream audiences, this project serves as a cultural bridge connecting people of all races and ethnicities,” said Ron Belk, one of the four executive producers.
