Calendar Girl
|
|
Overseas troops will have a reason to smile next year. Following in the footsteps of Betty Grable and Rita Hayworth, Queens stunner Antoinette Fortunato has just signed a contract for her first official modeling job and will be brightening soldiers’ days as a Patriot Girls USA Model 2009 pin-up girl.
“I just started modeling,” she said. “I shot an ad for a friend of mine who is a MAC make-up artist, which led to my picture appearing in a bridal magazine. I really want to continue doing beauty shoots.”
When she isn’t jumpstarting her new career, Antoinette works with terminally-ill children at various hospitals across the City. As a volunteer, she plays with the children, helps them with different projects and offers comfort and friendship.
She is also light on her feet. A lifelong ballet enthusiast, Antoinette took a temporary hiatus from dancing in college in order to focus on her studies. Now she is back on Pointe, shifting her focus from ballet to ballroom and Latin dancing.
“I’ve been training in dance for almost a year now,” she said. “It takes a lot of time and dedication but I’ve found a trainer and am now working on learning new techniques and improving my posture. I performed in one showcase in June and will be entering in more competitions.”
Antoinette was born in Ridgewood and now resides in Glendale. She moved around a bit as a young adult, she said, but instead of opting to live in Brooklyn and Manhattan hipster enclaves, she remained loyal to her roots – settling for a bit in Queens neighborhoods such as Fresh Meadows.
“I love how worldly everyone is in Queens,” she said. “I love the busy lifestyle and the fact that you can walk to the store without a car. I also love the city buzz and how close it is to Manhattan. I really enjoy it here.”

Donny Deutsch’s Bad Idea
|
| Donny Deutsch
|
Donny Deutsch, the Hollis Hills-born mogul whose popular CNBC show “The Big Idea” was recently put on hiatus, is reportedly finding creative ways to fill his free time.
The outspoken chairman of Deutsch, Inc., a $2.7 billion marketing company founded by his father, recently was photographed smooching a blonde named Lisa Sandler – something her husband, hedge-fund manager Andrew Sandler, was reportedly not surprised to discover.
Suspicious of his wife’s behavior, Sandler hired a private investigator a few weeks ago to follow her around New York City, the Post reported. The private investigator took surveillance photos of the un-married Deutsch with his unfaithful flame, which spurred Sandler to file for divorce, citing the advertising bigwig as a third party.
Until the scandal blows over, Deutsch, who once flirted with the idea of running for Mayor of New York City, might have to settle for running from paparazzi.

Loud Bikes: Graffiti Of The Ear
Astoria Councilman Peter Vallone Jr. wants “to take the squeal off the hogs.”
He’s working on new legislation to enable police officers to ticket motorcycle riders with loud “pipes.”
“They wake up a lot of angry Astorians. You have car alarms going off, dogs barking,” Vallone told Metro New York.
The law would enable police to enforce federal noise pollution regulations on bikes with straight pipes, which he said do not have Environmental Protection Agency manufacturing testing labels ensuring the 80 decibel federal limit.
But bikers argue that loud pipes save lives by alerting drivers to their presence.
But Vallone isn’t hearing any of that.
“Eighty decibels is very loud. The illegal pipes are 110 decibels, which is basically a jet engine,” he said.

K-Rod & The Putz
|
| K-Rob (l) J.J. Putz
|
The New York Mets pleased a heck of a lot of fans last week when they completely restructured their bullpen – the main scapegoat for their collapse over the last two years.
By bringing in Francisco “K-Rod” Rodriguez and J.J. Putz as their closer and set-up man respectively, they have sent a clear signal that they intend to show the division and the rest of the league that they are indeed the team to beat heading into next season.
The Putz move [insert joke here] was also addition by subtraction. The deal sent away Aaron Heilman and Joe Smith, who have been hated and a disappointment, respectively, and also dealt away Endy Chavez who, though he made one of the greatest catches in Major League Baseball history in Game 7 of the 2006 NLCS, has not developed into a star in New York.
The deals almost ensure newcomer Daniel Murphy will get the starting slot in left field and that the hot Mets bats will be enough to keep leads into the late innings.
We’re just waiting for J.J.’s first game that he blows and the ensuing “What A Putz” headline.

Senator Fran?
|
| Flushing's Fran Drescher
|
Just because a continent separates California from New York doesn’t make the Empire State immune to the random, egomaniacal B-list celebrity who thinks they deserve public office.
Yes, in another addition to the well-known idiom, we present Fran Drescher! The Flushing native and schlocky actress hopes Gov. David Paterson would consider her when filling Hillary Clinton’s soon to-be-vacant Senate seat.
“Fran Drescher, actress, women’s health advocate and public diplomacy envoy for the U.S. State Department, announced that she is throwing her hat into the ring of contenders for the senate seat . . .” her spokesman said.
The actress is best known for her role as the nasal-voiced, mini skirt-wearing diva caretaker in the 1990s sitcom “The Nanny.”
Since the show’s demise, Drescher battled uterine cancer and has become an activist for better women’s healthcare. The State Department recently made her the cause’s official envoy.
Paterson did not release a statement on the matter.
