Building Confidence

Christen Hunt
Home: Astoria
Age: 27
Height: 5’ 2"
Weight: 114lbs
Stats: 34-26-37

Christen Hunt can thank her voice for leading her to a career in modeling.

For the last two years she has been able to put her body in front of the camera, but that only came about because she had been doing a voiceover for the Discovery Channel, and one of the producers recommended that she try her hand at modeling.

Mostly, she has worked in music videos, and has appeared in some art publications.

But it is not what keeps her busy during the regular week. Christen works in the law field, helping out with lawsuits for an insurance company during the week and for an entertainment company on the weekends. But if the modeling got to the point where it could be a full-time gig, all the better.

“I’m enjoying it part-time,” but if the opportunity presented itself, I’d love to model full time and even do some traveling,” she said.

During her down time, Christen enjoys hanging out at home or working out at the gym. She also enjoys some of her local Astoria hangouts like Basurero on Steinway Street, Cavo on 31st Avenue and 42nd Street and of course the Bohemian Beer Garden.

After all, these spots draw a crowd — a show of Christen’s favorite thing about Queens: “The diversity.”

“Aside from the fact that everyone is so accepting of everyone else, you can eat Italian one night, Peruvian the next, and end the week with Greek,” she said.

This stunning gal, who enjoys dancing, softball, writing and eating out added a few words of encouragement to anybody looking to get into the business.

“The more you do it, the better you get,” she said. “It’s a great confidence builder, too.”

Happy Anniversary, Love David

On June 2, 1977, Forest Hills’ Jimmy Breslin, then a Daily News columnist, received a chilling letter from “Son of Sam.”

Thirty years later, the missives from serial killer David Berkowitz still resonate with the Pulitzer Prize-winning scribe.

“This is a fine example of how sometimes ... something happens in the air, sticks to you, and 50 years later, you can’t brush it off,” Breslin told the News.

Berkowitz, serving six consecutive life sentences at Sullivan Correctional Facility, killed six people and injured seven others during his infamous spree that had the entire city on edge.

Five of the seven shooting incidents took place in Queens – Bayside, Bellerose, Flushing, and two in Forest Hills. In one of the letters sent to Breslin, Berkowitz expressed his perverse affinity for the borough.

“To the people of Queens, I love you. And I want to wish you all a Happy Easter.”

Break The Record

Fran Capo

Want to be part of a world record being broken? Caveat emptor: it’s not a sexy one.

Howard Beach native Fran Capo, the world’s fastest talking woman, will be holding a Mind, Money, Body and Soul Seminar at the Marriott in Uniondale to discuss the above mentioned subjects – but everyone participating will have the chance to become a part of the Guinness Book of World Records when Capo helps coordinate the record for – get this – the largest number of people gathered in a room yodeling while standing on one leg.

Like it says above, this ain’t a sexy one, but it’s a record nonetheless. Sounds like the kind of thing only a fast talking gal can convince a crowd to do. Go to francapo.com to learn more. See you there.

Spring Awakening

John Gallagher, Jr

Across the country Americans seeking entertainment and air conditioning are sitting down to movie sequels. And here in New York, Broadway producers are mounting shows similarly reliant on well-tested formulas. In fact 1/6 of the musicals on Broadway are based on Disney stories.

“Spring Awakening’s” successful run at the Atlantic Theatre Company turned out to be enough to secure a Broadway transfer. Based on German playwright Frank Wedekind’s once-banned 19th century play, "Spring Awakening" may have gained a musical score, but it retained its original edge. The poster features legs tangled in lovemaking, the marquee outside the Eugene O’Neil theatre lists unknowns.

One such unknown is 22-year-old Queens resident John Gallagher, Jr. Gallagher made his New York stage debut at the age of 16, leading to a slew of roles in theatre, television and film. “Spring Awakening” marks his second Broadway appearance and first Tony nomination.

Gallagher's Tony win Sunday night proved that the producers were right to keep him in the role when the show jumped to Broadway.

Old Friends

The Library of Congress came out from behind its quiet, dry façade to sponsor a Paul Simon concert last month in honor of his receipt of the library’s first Gershwin Award.

Kew Gardens Hills native and Queens College grad Simon, with his neighbor and musical partner Art Garfunkel, joined the Zulu choir and Ladysmith Black Mambazo for two rare reunions at the Warner Theater in D.C.

The Gershwin Award recognized Simon’s contributions to the popular song as an art form. Celebrating his “excellence exemplifying the Gershwins, the concert was punctuated by high-fives and hugs,” according to the NY Times.

Amiable as always, Simon embraced his sometime best buddy Garfunkel. The Queens duo, though aged, came together to form an image that was imprinted in the minds of their many fans

Ella’s Back

This summer is sure to be filled with the soothing sounds of former Addisleigh Park resident Ella Fitzgerald.

Widely considered one of the greatest singers ever, two tribute albums and a PBS documentary commemorating Fitzgerald make summertime debuts.

According to ellafitzgerald.com, “We All Love Ella: Celebrating the First Lady of Song,” a special concert filmed at USC featuring performances by Natalie Cole, k.d. lang, Richmond Hill High School grad Cyndi Lauper, Ruben Studdard, Take 6 and others was broadcast for the first time on June 6.

This concert served as an inspiration for “Love Letters from Ella,” a 10-track album featuring unreleased songs by the 13-time Grammy Award-winner and a bevy of collaborators, including former St. Albans resident Count Basie. It will be released July 31 on Starbucks Entertainment/Concord Records.

Fitzgerald would have turned 90 this past April.
