Bookworm Bombshell

Elena Gil
Home: Elmhurst
Age: 23
Height: 5’6"
Weight: 115 lbs
Stats: 32-25-35

After graduating from college in 2003, on a whim Elena Gil entered the Miss Belleza Latina pageant. Gil had to submit photos and had her photographer friend take the pictures.
When the proofs returned the Latin beauty saw something in them that she couldn’t believe.

“I never considered myself to be a model, but after graduating and becoming vegetarian — becoming veggie was the best thing I’ve done for myself — I felt great and a little more daring,” says Gil, who had grown up with her nose in a book.

From there, Gil started building a portfolio that boasted her exotic features. Balancing commercials, promotional modeling at trade shows and a campaign for Morgenthal Frederics eyewear, she still found time to focus on cultural work that was meaningful to her. Gil hosted an episode of a TV variety show in the Dominican Republic and has performed Peruvian folklore singing in New York and Peru. Eventually, she landed a steady modeling job with an airline at JFK, but has since put the job on stand by to continue her education

“Right now, I am a law student at the University of San Francisco Law School, Gil said. “I never saw myself as having chosen one kind of work over modeling or entertainment. I want to do it all . . . I feel that my experience in one trade always enriches the other facets of my life.”

Gil said that the work she has done in front of the camera has helped her grow as a person enormously, but it was the institutions in her hometown that really inspired her to follow through with her dreams.

“I love the Queens libraries and am a big supporter of them as is evidenced by my constant late fines,” she said with a giggle. “I think these institutions are an important part of any neighborhood, especially ones with a dominant immigrant community.”

When she was a child, Gil’s family members had gone there to learn English, or check out books in Spanish, while she attended the reading groups.

“I really can’t say enough about how much I appreciate public libraries,” she said. “Elmhurst library is really too small for the population that it serves and should really be expanded and upgraded. If I ever get a chance to do that, I will. I really love my neighborhood."

Doing Our Penance

Koch at Flushing's CB7

Flushing residents might have played a part in former Mayor Ed Koch’s defeat to David Dinkins back in 1989 and since then, he’s been asked to take another shot at his old job.

Koch, who had a five-year stint as a Queens Tribune movie reviewer, recently addressed an audience at Community Board 7 (right), asking for the support of state funding for education. It didn’t take long before he was asked if he was considering a re-run for mayor. He briefly explained why he hasn't done it.

“As I would walk through the streets, people would say to me, ‘Oh Mayor, you must run again,’” Koch repeated one of his old favorite lines. “My response was always the same – No. People threw me out and now the people must be punished.”

Alicia For Lunch

Alicia Keys

Queens’ Alicia Keys and Russell Simmons were two of the celebs who participated in Lunch With A Leader, a 10-day auction that took place last month where they were auctioned off for an hour to the highest bidder on eBay.

The high bidder won a memorable lunch with either their target celebrity or autographed memorabilia.

Other stars that participated in the auction include Patti Labelle and Magic Johnson.

The auction benefited Communities in Schools, an organization committed to keeping students in school.

Au Revoir, Vivi

The Great Dog Hunt Poster

When a Westminster Kennel Club show dog goes missing from JFK Airport, it certainly brings out the interesting folks.

First, there is real-life “Ace Ventura” Karin Goin, who is hired by pet owners in crisis when little “Snookums”
or “Cuddles” goes missing. Goin has been searching throughout Queens for the beloved whippet Vivi with her two scent hounds, Cade and Boone.

A total of 33 psychics have been brought in to locate the dog. So far, the only psychic result of any consequence was the claim that Vivi is on a boat to France, wearing a little hat.

Cade and Boone may be the closest to finding Vivi, as the two dogs have indicated that they picked up her scent in Auburndale. The dogs lead search parties to a residential garage near 48th Street and 190th Ave., where Goin set up a bait station with items supplied by the dog’s owner, Jil Walton.

We’ll keep you posted.
